cross training here- christmas shopping with heavy bags.

I think Newcastle is in laps- sounds very dull indeed.

  • Options
Tomorrow I intend to do that same cross training OO. In fact I'll be doing it round Newcastle, in laps. But not on the Town Moor!

Poacher, beleated well done on your 3.16 mara and that it was the cold that made you run faster - love it!

O&O, cracking 10k time and souvenier too.

Martin, glad to see you are still getting a good weekly mileage and the knee is holding out. Maybe doing the doubles are a good way of training for you?

Great mileage for the year Four calling Birch

It's been a busy few days on here, I've been busy on the other side! JUst ticking over withtthe mileage at the moment waiting for the scheduel to start next Monday. 4 miles steady tonight and my work Xmas meal tomorrow night.

    Morning all.

First day off work for me image

Off for a 3-4M bimble in a moment then sports massage this evening.

I need to look at some weather forecasts...

If you can stand the utter tedium, track marathons must be the way to go. Nice and flat and if you run on the inside lane then you can shave a few hundred metres off the distance image

  • Options

I finished 156th out of 7500 at the first Brighton marathon in 2010 in 3:11, and would have finished in the 120's with the same time this year.

Joolska - how are you feeling - nervous, excited, confident?? On the weather front it looks like it's going to be pretty mild with a helpful westerly wind, but peeing down on Friday image

  • Options
50% excited, 50% scared, BOTF. Friday does look like it might be quite damp (and that's the day I'm running 33-34M, too!) but as long as the wind is a westerly that's one thing in my favour. At least it's not going to be freezing cold and rainy, which would be the pits.

Fundraising is going so well, however: £3,925.50 image Which doesn't include the ~£500 pledged. And I had a lovely chat with Chris (friend with MND) last night, which has motivated me that little bit more.
  • Options

Jools - fantastic performance on the fundraising. I have no doubt that you will run up the garden path and into the house with a big smile on your face. Have you got someone taking photos en route? Will you be stopping every so often to update your blog?

I don't finish work until Friday and I'm planning on a good length run on Xmas Eve to "celebrate" but nothing quite up to your exploits!

Medium paced 8 and a bit miles for me this morning. Why is it that when cars come towards and they can see you 'cos you're wearing a head torch and fluorescent clothing, they still persist in leaving their headlights on full and half blinding you! image

Can anyone recommend a pair of cycling glasses - predominantly for cycling, but would also be used for driving and looking cool (when I let someone else borrow them!)

Sunwise are great value for money (at full price) and just stumbled across them on this bike-porn site with big discount

    Well done Poacher

    Good luck Jools!

KR - Knee is holding out ok so far.  Still not sure about putting any real pace through it, although I am venturing down the club tonight for the Christmas lights run.  I am going to ditch the doubles once I am back up to full fitness though as longer runs are more important that short doubles I think.

Good luck Jools.  It's a wonderful thing that you are doing and I am sure that everyone will be so proud of you when you arrive home. image

Lorenzo: the headlights thing is one of life's little mysteries. Always makes me swear!

I'm planning to get my dear mama to take my camera and take pictures each morning and evening. My digital camera is a bit ancient so I'm not sure I want to risk taking it with me in case the weather isn't the best. I will be blogging each day.
  • Options

Good luck Jools, you'll have the support of a lot of people on here to spur you on!

Would have liked to got the Club tonight Martin, but got my works Xmas meal. Sa the display on Sunday, but without the lights on it was a bit dull.

Gul, I qouldn't fancy running round a bend for half a marathon. I've always wondered how they keep track of how many laps you have done?

  • Options

Track maras involve counters who are paired up with one or more runners for whom they tick off the laps.  Anyone who is persuaded by a chum or loved one to do this rather dull job is very popular!  There are also track ultras, but let's not go there.

Joolska - good luck, you will feel amazing at the end.   On really long runs there is very little weight penalty in carrying a disposable camera, the sort that can be bought at Boots or similar.  They tend to have about 27 frames and a flash - you can take snaps or ask passers by or chums to oblige - that would give you a fuller record of your great adventure.  Not stellar quality but easy to get the pics put onto CD during processing.

Lorenzo, they don't leave the lights on full for too long if you make an appropriate gesture...image

Poacher, well run, sneaking in a decent time as well. Any plans to do a faster one in the next year or so (i.e. the full prepare for it rather than turn up and run). Not meant in any way derogatory, but you have buckets of endurance and a bit of speed training and taper has got to pay a heap big dividend.

Did my 20 miler this morning to complete the series 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. That is base training done, a bit of an easy session over Christmas and New Year and then the 16 week plan starts on 2nd Jan: must remember to sit down and plan it in the next week or so. The 20 came in as 20.16 miles in 2:30:29 so average pace of 7:28. The outward leg was 1:17 (about a minute too quick for MP+20%) and the return was 1:13 (about a minute too slow for MP+10%) so the pace is starting to get bedded into the legs. Didn't feel really good to start with this morning but then daughter #3 woke up vomiting at midnight and carried on doing so every 15 minutes all night so really no sleep at all. Also did it with no water or gels (but had a breakfast beforehand) and that is really the limit I can do unfueled.

well done PMJ, thats a nice sequence of long runs. I got up to 20M this week too but I jumped straight there from 16M. I do mine off no breakfast and no water or gels, once you get used to it you'll cope ok. But you might need some fuel for a faster paced LSR. Not sure that I'll do another 20 for a few weeks.

So you are going to follow your own plan ? I thought you were going to follow P&D ?

Because they simply don't realise the impact it has as they never walk or run anywhere at night.

Good luck Jools - I'd been sort of hoping I'd be off on Friday so I could come and cheer you on somewhere along the route, but the buggers have extended my contract so I have to be here.

Enjoy it Jools - once in a lifetime experience to be savoured. Try to get someone to get a few bits of video footage too since it's great fun to look back on

Good long uns from TR and PMJ. Make sure you both have a break to freshen things up for Jan chaps. My long run has just got back up to 18 but I've got a few more weeks to play with

Track session for me this aft. Warm up 4 miles from 7.25 to 6.29 pace then 7 * 1k kind of at 10k-ish pace off 2 minute recoveries. They all came out in the the 5.40s pace which slightly surprised me with a last one thrown in at 5.35 for good measure. Did them at the track which always makes things quicker though eh.

Planning one more hard day on Christmas Eve then bring on the gluttony

  • Options

Joolska - Good luck, very impressive effort....

PMJ - Well done, another solid one in the bank

FW - That looks (another) solid intervals session - you must be feeling in good nick

Slow 10 for me today following 2 rest days.  Was meant to try and drop 3 quicker ones in the middle but legs still felt a bit of weekends LSR so I decided to push the quicker one's to tomorrow.

So you are going to follow your own plan ? I thought you were going to follow P&D ?

Loosely based on P&D up to 70 18 week plan shall we say.

    Mods are:
    1) 18 weeks started yesterday so skipping to week 3 on Jan 2nd and having some down time.
    2) No doubles for recovery so some of the 70 weeks become 66
    3) x-country for the next few weeks means they replace speed sessions
    4) raced HM (Wokingham) and 20 (Finchley) with some sort of mini taper
    5) Rest day is either Sat or Sun so the week gets juggled
    6) Stretch some of the long runs to get 5x21 or better

Must pat myself on the back, uploaded the 20 and the pace is pretty much where it was planned to be so maybe I can go out sensibly and not fly out and die.

Joolska -  Good luck on your epic journey, hope the weather is kind to you.

Good long run from PMJ and some very speedy running from Fraser.  Lorenzo  I use Sunwise glasses, picked up a pair cheap from Start Fitness or Sports Shoes and love them even though my kids say I look like an alien with them on.

Treadmill intervals yesterday and 10 miles for me tonight after an enjoyable day at Longleat, nice and quiet down there for a change.  Meant to be slow and felt quite hard, was n't checking garmin and ended up at 7:48 avg, can't get the hang of this running slow.image

FW - I'm still low mileage at the mo and biding my time a bit. I've been averaging mid 30s for a while with a long run of 15 or 16M, this weekend I upped it just to see if I could, and I still only bagged 40M for the week. From January comes the upping of the frequency to an LSR and 3 x doubles, but i'll ease into it. My approach has been since the Autumn and for the next 6 weeks minimum is run easy and turbo hard and my running legs respond well to that !

PMJ - good idea on stretching the LSRs up a bit, but I guess P&D are running the long runs quite hard, so thats why they are shorter. I have the 20M race included, but no 1/2 mara. I like the fact that the P&D plan has an LSR, a midweek 15 and a Friday 12, all of that is marathon/endurance gold. If I could build them into my commutes.................and then make the Monday double a Jonesy 12 and 10, then I'd really be getting somewhere.

4 x 6 mins tonight with 2 mins jog recovery, followed by Christmas drinkies. Managed 6:32, 6:30, 6:20 & 6:12 pace for the reps, and a large Coke in the pub image

How far is a track Ultra Poacher? Don't tell me you have done one!

Good 20 mile base run PMJ considering the night before.

Did the large Coke have a large vodka BOTF?

Good luck Jools - we'll all be cheering you on.
Nice speedwork from FW and BOTF.
Impressive tally of LSRs from PMJ before he even starts!
And it looks like Barry is challenging The Rat for the title of dreadmill nutter, sorry I mean champ.
KR - what are you doing posting on here at gone 1o'clock in the morning - you should be getting lots of rest ready for Monday!
    Cut-back week continues with 4 very steady miles @ 7:56 m/m.

Belated congratulations Poacher on another solid marathon.

Enjoy your challenge Joolska. Looks like the weather will be reasonable

PMJ Your plan looks very well thought through and your 'base training' well executed. I expect you could get a good result from following it and I will be eager to hear your story.

I'm just plodding away at 50mile weeks as the base training for Comrades preparation. I was supposed to be having a cutback week this week, but my car broke down and won't be fixed until Friday. So I'm running 14 miles a day and using the train to commute. It one way to get the miles up.

Finally I ordered a Garmin - went for the 310XT in the end - basically because of the battery life, that it is easily usable for the bike and that it is waterproof. I expecting much more convenience than my smartphone.
  • Options
The 310XT is a fine choice Bike It, and possibly now not so expensive as the newer version of it, the 910, has just come out.

7 miles for me today. What a chore. Two weeks ago that would have a been a short easy run. Ruddy lurgy.

Jools, is it tomorrow you start?
  • Options
Good to know you recommend the 310XT Speedy. I picked it after the discussion here a few months ago on which Garmin to buy. I've been aware of the 910 coming and I've been expecting a price drop or Christmas sales on the 310XT for some time. After checking Amazon everyday for the last month I could finally get one at 199.99 instead of the regular 250ish. I bought it at Millet Sports through Amazon
  • Options
I do set off tomorrow, Speedy. Heading off to the station soon to collect my dear mama (aka my baggage lady). Hope you shift that lurgy properly soon. Mine lingered for quite a few days.
