Great swim Mikasa, I managed to do 750m in about 20 minutes before the. coached session started. The. Coach understands that I have to get out early to get to work.

This is my question as well Glasslegs. Not had an answer yet though. I'd say probably further and maybe an extra session as well. (But I'm thinking about doing the biking from the 'intermediate' plan). I was going to go with 'just finish' plan as I'm unable to run at the moment. Will be using the x-trainer to try to keep some kind of 'running' fitness but I know cycling makes a huge difference to my running as well so am not too anxious yet. Also having to build up on the swimming again and learn fc as I'd rather get that sorted before Wild Boar.

I will be using the x trainer as well mikasa due to injury issues as well as the Stairmaster if you can access one they are a really good alternative injury permitting.

    Nice swimming Mikasa & Steady.

Really enjoyed your race report Glasslegs.

Run done 5k trail run, 36mins - because I haven't done any structured running for ages I'm doing the just finish run program but the rest is intermediate.

Well done glasslegs and cracking report.

Cake - Long story short, ready about a good bike shop via here, Bridgtown Cycles,  discovered it 150 miles away but was close to my parents canal boat so went over a few times and looked and bought from them in November. Went back and had a free re-fit and service in January so they have been fantastic highly recommend them. But that has left me with the issue of finding somewhere local to maintain Tabitha Trek in the manner she deserves. Thankfully after Sunday I now have that place. image I know it's my fault as it's my first bike with index gears and I still frequently mash them somewhat.

Took a look last night and clever old trek put a guard/decal sticker right where the damage was done so I think it's not too bad, sticker needs removing so it doesn't come off and get caught in the gears and there will be a small mark on the frame but I think I got away with it this time! I have apologised to Tabitha profusely and explained that I've found some very good mechanics to take care of her so I'm hoping she'll forgive me.

Got a 90 mins tempo session to do tonight so I will soon know.

Ali if it comes to it I just shops I would trust with my bike in Sheffield and Sutton coldfield if any good. Don't think it is but just in case. The one in Sheffield is run by a tri type called Alex who would trust with my unborn child.

I lost a lot of hearing in one ear and got a hearing aid (though I don't wear it anymore - I find I'm better without it having probably learned to live with the deafness). Nobody ever noticed it (I do have a lot of hair!). The best bit was being able to hear conversations in a group. Not sure about running with it in - though I could hear the Garmin beeps! - found it a little irritating.

Make the most of what you have, live with a good grace, and change what you can for the better. Sounds a good philosophy.

As daft as this might sound until I was 4 I was conpleatly deaf. Had op's on both ears. Enjoy it and live becasue sooner or later all our bodies will pass there sell by date. image

Slateman sprint tri / second triathlon / 1st race report.

The run – ouch, somebody told me the run on the sprint was quite flat the lying b*****d it was 6km of relentless ups and downs and steep both ways in parts, the uphills were more of a power walk really and I walked past a few people who were jogging, the last mile was hell and I was glad to see the finish line strangely enough it was the downhills that really seemed to take it out of me but it’s done now and looking back if only the last mile of the whole event really hurt I must have got it something like right.

    .

image Who told you it was flat? image

Cake it was a bloke I speak to in the gym who has done a few triathlons never thought to ask whether he was speaking from experience when he told me about the run though but as I had already signed up can't really blame him next time I'll do my own homework.

Just returned from gym done no.1 fink swim session took 50 mins found it challenging will cross train the run later when I've sussed out how to use my HRM Ali know how you feel it took me ages and a lot of messing about to find a decent LBS great when you do.

Hmmm, finally got a reply from the swim co-ordinator as have been unable to get through on the phone. They have places on their improver lessons (I guess I'm not a total beginner), lessons are 1/2hr and cost starts (whatever that means) from £27.90 per month which needs to be paid on DD. You have to give your bank details before they save you a space.

So, what do I need to ask? I can only think, how many people on each lessons and how many instructors. Anything else you peeps can think of? Can't remember last time I've taken lessons in anything...image

My bike is back from the LBS, cost was very reasonable and is now good to go for the race. I did say to them that I cannot blame the bike now, just the engine that powers it.

For those about to start Fink for the Boar, I would aim your long rides to cover enough distance but the shorter session in the week could be done on time. That was the way I adapted my training, so that I could get some 50 milers in regardless of what time was stated, due to my slow pedalling.

Mikasa can't think of anything else other than do you need to book so many sessions up front?

    mikasamikasa ✭✭✭

Cool, thanks guys and gals. Will give them a call tomorrow and maybe book some in. I'm going for the late Monday evening group rather than early Saturday group so the lessons will probably start in June now as we have Bank Holiday approaching.

'Run' done on the x-trainer and then did one round of my gym programme. Feeling very pleased with myself. imageimage

Steady - good idea in regards to long bikes at the weekend.

I'll probably adapt my training the same way thanks steady.

Mikasa - I'd ask what the focus is on in the lessons as (I'm assuming) you want to focus on front crawl?

Swim session done - today I was doing timed sets to try and maintain splits - I kept getting faster each time image

After a very stressful week of moving and cleaning I decided to do the Little Piglet Sprint Tri!  I woke up screamingly early downed the porridge and tea, double checked all my kit, filled the bottles etc and herded husband into the car.  Half awake watching Coalville go past I thought nothing I am eating or drinking today has caffeine in it, hmmm coffee – oh feck I left the drinks sitting on the bench – husband we have to go back.  Good thing we had left earlier than expected so it wasn’t a big stressfest.

Got to the venue and it was already blue skies and heating up.  I got registered and set the bike up – I got an eyeful of bike porn – lovely P3 parked not too far away from me.  I eventually stopped dribbling.   I found Pixie and got a Pixie sized hug – and remembered to put my bottle on my bike.  Realising the run from the lake to T1 this year is a long, long way didn’t fill me with joy, nor did the discovery that the run wasn’t the pancake flat run it had been last year with all the nice trees and shade!! No it was back out onto the Wild Boar road for 2.5k with a drinks station at the turn around.  Undulating was the word for the day.

I wandered off to put my wettie on – wearing my wettie always makes me feel like my thighs are ginormous!  Listened to the wee talk and then we were herded into the water and told the start would be in 10 mins, after 10 mins we were told that it would be another 5 mins – we had now been floating, sculling and generally wanting to get on with it for 15 mins.   Due to the windy conditions the buoys had been blown off course and had to be put back into place.  All the while my goggles had decided not to sit right and were slightly uncomfortable – but they weren’t letting in water and weren’t steaming up so I told myself to HTFU.  Eventually we got underway – seriously speedy swimmers this year – first out of the water finished in 11 minutes! It was very warm in the water and by 2/3’s of the way round I was noticing it.  I had expected to finish by about 20 mins if not a bit less than that but due to the buoys moving again I managed to swim at least another 250metres – I’m such a numpty swimmer!  Swim: 00:26:54

  • Options

Extremely slow T1 - 00:04:24 Long run to transition included – Really have to get quicker taking the wettie off! Also my Garmin decided to chuck a wobbly and didn’t know what it was doing – my bike was measured as a swim and my run as a bike which meant my foot pod data didn’t get captured but ce la vie!

Since I had a shocker of a swim I was 2nd to last out of the water – easy to find my bike! I had put my compression calf guards under my wettie, which made getting it off easier.  Once on the bike I decided to leave the swim behind and focus on having a really good ride – so I whacked it into a big gear and started out.  I didn’t see anyone for the first 5km but as soon as I saw people I thought woohoo I see you now I can chase you down!  So began the chasing I passed about 5 race peoples and some I don’t think were in the race which confused me a bit but not for long as I left them behind.  My approach to this years ride was as LMH said it’s ment to hurt it’s a race keep going hard.  I had a PB for this distance 21k in 45 minutes, with an average of 28.1kph!  And 8 of those kms were over 30kph!  I was well happy pulling back into transition!  Big smiley faces.  Bike: 00:45:02

T2: 00:01:17 tying your damn shoes takes ages!

I was quite worried about the run having had about a month of problems with running and had a lot of Physio help with the cupping, massage, strapping and exercises.  So I approached the start of the run quite cautiously running by how I felt since my Garmin wasn’t telling me what I wanted to know!  I got passed coming out of T2 by one of the guys who I had passed on the bike – he was just flying – I was happy to let him go as there was no way I could keep to his pace.  It was really warm off the bike and it only got hotter – I usually run with one of my little bottles but that was sitting in a draw at home so I just manned up and kept on going. One of the ladies I had passed caught up to me and went past me but I kept her in sight till the drinks station where I stopped to dowse myself.  At which point the guy who had come out of the lake behind me caught up to me – he had a similar ride to me but had better transitions and was having a good run.  I didn’t know any of this except I thought he was one of the ones I had passed and thought feck it my leg feels fine I’m not letting this one run away on me.  So I tucked in behind him and shadowed him all the way to the finish line.  Because I picked up the pace I managed a negative split!   He sprinted away at the end but I had already asked enough of my legs so I let him go and smiled for the camera.  Run: 00:30:34

Overall I think it was a good day at the office – I had a banging ride for me! image  The swim I think was a bit out of my control it is what it is.  I was happy with the run as I didn’t hurt myself and managed a negative split.  What I noticed different this year was the race participants had grown by half again and that half was a lot of very speedy peeps!  It was lovely having Pixie come to yell at me and telling me to HTFU on the run and picking me up out of the water.  It was much appreciated.  I then went home and washed a large amount of sweat off me, whilst husband made pancakes and spent the rest of the day on the couch.   Job well done. image

nice 5 mile run this morning - very warm and muggy though, and I struggled to sleep  - probably a combination of the heat and work. Tired now so off to bed soon

MC - good luck with the interview.

Great report - and riding Buttercup! It's in there, you just have to let it out image

Go show them why they can't afford not to employ you MC.

At least you know what you're dealing with EP.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Great report Buttercup and well done on the race.

Goodluck MC - you'll be fine.  Just tell them that you run marathons and do triathlons and can add up a bit..what's not to like?

Mikasa - you seem to swim twice as fast as me...what are you going to be like when you master front crawl?!

I swam again yesterday lunch.  The advice from glasslegs to start breathing out before putting my head back in the water seemed to help as I didn't feel as bloated and I did 100m more in the same time.  I'm in the pool again today and I should run this evening as there is no bike to work this week.  All this proper training is making me tired.

Well done Buttercup sounds like a fun race.

EP WW last night for me too, not great but could have been worse, does mean I have more to shift this week than I would like but I set myself a very "easy" goal for 1st June so need to give my self a kick and actually achieve it.
The vast buckets of swizzle sweets at work are NOT helping, but I have managed to leave them alone for 2 days now so I WILL continue. Grrrrr

Nice run this morning, horribly slow even for me but that seems to be what is needed right now in order to be able to keep running. Big morning tomorrow as off to see the local biomechanics expert on physio's recommendation, hopefully after that I will know what I need to do and can actually start working on it. Could be shoes, could be insoles, could be strengthening exercises, could be gait changes, could be nothing, could be any combination of the above.
Currently I have no run style as I worked to move away from the heavy footed ironman shuffle I originally developed. So that I could be a little faster but since then it's all gone wrong. Maybe I really am a shuffler and should learn to embrace it. image

Can you tell I tend to over think things? image

  • Options

Ali if it's any help at all someone told Caz a couple of years ago that if she tried to run properly instead of shuffler for just part of each training run that the muscle memory would start to have a effect long term. Even if it's just for a few feet at first.

After hearing that I've started to do it on each run I do and starting to notice a slight difference. Should be taken with a pinch of salf as my running is inproving anyway with consistancy after time off but might be worth trying that instead of worriing that your not doing to right all the time.

Nothing wrong with being a shuffler. image

    Buttercup nice one. image

    Hi All,

as this is a long, but appropriately named thread....

Can anyone recommend a good beginner sprint program, I've found a couple, but I thought it better to ask for recommendations.

I've entered the Great Dunmow Sprint in September, so will want to start training soon. I'm a month or so back into running after being off since last September with plantar fasciitis. Speed is currently somewhere between going backwards and arthritic snail!

    Cheers

    hi all

thanks for all the positive vibes image I did manage to slip in about marathons and triathlons.... and it must have worked because I have got the jobimage I think I am going to enjoy teaching the kids there - it is as if someone picked out all the nice girls and put them in one place - oh wait, yes, that is what they do when the give them the 11plus exam...

hopefully I will sleep well tonight because I haven't slept much the last few nights. I predict I will be fast asleep by 8 on the sofa!

Must write my resignation letter though image

Now the important question since it's a posh school does that mean it has it's own pool?
