    Lingster / Prep School

Good to hear you guys are still around and mad enough to do this L2B again.. I did try my best to confuse you during last years recce, but my efforts were obviously in vain..

Anyway, I'm not able to help out this year as I'm injured big style.. Apparently it's damage to my medial meniscus (knee area) ? I'm due to see Ortho Specialist next Monday to see if it can be repaired at all.. It went on a 20 miler in January and, despite several rest and re-group attempts it kept failing on me..

If you get a chance, let me know if you could scan the new maps and send to me by email ? (dougiegray2011AThotmailDOTcoDOTuk)

    Cheers, dg

Hi folks - was wondering who was staying in London the night of the 29th and where?

  • Options

Hi Dougie, good to hear from you. The reccies last year were an eye opener and am grateful to you for the experience. Good luck with the knee. As for the maps, I have seen the new route, courtesy of Ruth, but looks like I won't get the book until the day as I was late registering. The route from the heath is following the Ravensbourne.

If anyone is scanning I would love to see a copy too as I have to work out support vehicle, (Mum). gjkmba at gmailDOTcom

Dougie as soon as my scanner is fixed i will get them oveer to you. The course has changed cp1 and cp2 are in the same place just a different route to them. Cp3 is in a new place completley.

Prep and anyone else who wants to join a reccie this sat going to at Keston car park for 8 am going to go to cp3 about 20 miles or so. Only 19 days to go image

Okay, sounds great, thank you. Otherwise mum on standby image

I'm in the Claredon as well.

I really wanted to come up for a recce on Saturday but I cant get there as I've got a few things on, also have a race in the afternoon so I might drive over to cp5 on Sunday and see what Black Cap is like image

Is a head torch recommended for the start? I saw last years photos and it appeared  dark for the first hour or so.

    Morning all,

Good to see everybody is still keen!
My preparation has been bad for this (injuries, illness, no recce, non-terrain specific training,...), but I am going to give it my best shot. Even so, realy looking forward to it! image

As this will be my 2nd race ever (the first being next Sunday) I dont know about these things: should I bother cramming as much training in as possible these last few weeks or just relax and just get to the start healthy as its too late to improve much anyway?

Also, what is the distance between checkpoints? I cant seem to find that info. Is there no cutoff at the first checkpoint? Guess they assume everybody will be able to make at least that image

Am I the only one who now dreams about running as well?

  • Options

Morning Darren - hopefully booking a room in the Clarendon later today for me the guy I am running with. We were also hoping to get at least one recce completed but I have been plagued with a knee injury the past 6 weeks, am hoping it will clear in time for the 30th!!!! Let me know if you fancy catching up over a coffee on Saturday evening before the race? Would be good to start putting some faces to the names on here image

Hi All, I ran part of the course as a recce yesterday. Started at Hayes (about 7 miles from the start) and ran to just short of CP3. I have never run self-navigated on a route like this before whilst map reading at the same time. As a result I managed to get lost a couple of times, luckily I had my Iphone to bail me out (I know on the day that is not allowed...). Small parts of it have clearly not been used for a while and were overgrown with stingers and brambles. I only had shorts on with ankle socks (stupid I know!) and I was stung quite badly so just a small warning to anyone doing a recce this weekend. I am going to run from where I finished yesterday to cp5 on Friday if anyone fancies it? (I know weekday probably won’t suit many people though). Found myself running 9.30 to 10 min miles on the roads and obviously a much slower speed on the thin trails and up the hills. I can’t really commit to a pace for the actually day (as have no idea how I'll fare) so I guess if I end up running similar speed to anyone then more than happy to show them the way!

Oh that doesn't sound good. Nothing worse than nettle stings on a long run.

thanks for the heads up on the condition of the trail Ed. Comforting to know I am not alone coping with injuries Matt, Kraemdon.

Ed - will definitely take you up on the offer of a tour guide if that's ok?

Hey Prep -  yep knee has been bad for six weeks so have hardly run. Am hoping that getting to the start line with two good knees will make up for the fitness I have lost the past month and half!

    There're 9 miles between checkpoints.

As there are people in The Clarendon and the Greenwich Travelodge, would anyone be interested in meeting up in a restaurant in Greenwich or Blackheath? In King William Walk Greenwich there is a Vietnamese restaurant that is pretty casual and does egg noodles, rice, tofu, along with the usual stuff. As we won't be hitting the hooch shouldn't be expensive.

good idea prep count me and my mate in we are staying at the claredon getting there for 6 so 7:00 onwards for food would be good image
  • Options

Morning Prep - me and my mate are also now booked into the Clarendon so count us in. We should be in town from around 6ish.

Matt, I will not have recce'd the first or last 7 miles but more than happy to be a tour guide for the bits in between that. I'll be arriving at 5ish on the morning of the race so happy to meet up at registration?

Hi, I've been lucky enough to get a late entry this year.

I tore my calf muscle just before the West Highland Way race this year, and wasn't sure I'd be fit in time.    Unfortunately my late entry means I won't get a map book until the day.

Lingster, is there any chance you could please email me a scanned copy of the route too? (kwilli13@ford.com)

I ran the L2B in 2010, and got hugely lost, and really appreciate the need for homework!!

Hi everybody, hope training is going well.  I'm also booking into Clarendon, though not sure I'll be there for 7pm or whenever you're looking to head out.   No doubt we'll be the only people leaving before 5am though, so should be able to say hello in the morning.   Looking forward to running / walking / hobbling alongside....well, anyone who can show me the way, basically!

I see a comment above about being silly and running in ankle socks - that was all I ever considered wearing!   Is everybody else going to be wearing tights?

  • Options

Hi Klute - To be honest providing a few people have gone before you on the day the bit I recce'd is fine with ankle socks in my opinion. It was only just a few places of roughly 50m or so which was overgrown which clearly hadnt been used for a while, the rest was fine.

  • Options

Hi Ed - sounds good. We will be wondering over around 5ish so will see you then. I will PM you my mobile number as well.

  • Options

Thanks Ed, socks it is.   I don't think there is much doubt that a few people will have gone in front of me!

The restaurant is called Vietnam Oriental and the address is 17 King William Walk,
Greenwich, SE10 9JH, in the centre of Greenwich. I'll get there for 7pm and grab a large table. So far Lingster x 2, Matt x 2, me x 2, total 6 so far.

I hope everyone's tapering now - I'm not doing any more long runs, just lots of short ones! We need to make sure we're fully rested before the big day image
  • Options

Count me in for the meal as well.

Just trying tp pull together a list of things I need for the overnight stay, what I need for the race in my bag and whats going in the support car (thanks Lingster).

Well that's today's reccie done cp1 .to cp3 should have been 20 miles or so 27 actually run and a lot of head scratching done along the way. Think you you'd agree prep a bit harder navigation wise than last year's course but now know the way. Would recommend calf socks if you have them quite a few brambles and nettles on the course. Well 14 days to go one more big run for me then taper look forward to meeting on the Saturday night for a meal.

Bearing in mind that we ran up and down the track of hell four times, no wonder we were cut to shreds. The nettle sting tingles have finally subsided. The Reccie was invaluable and I keep playing it back in my mind. Thank you Lingster for organising it. Darren, will book the biggest table, so we can huddle around the maps. Managed 13 miles today across the fens, and was chuffed to find some more nettle and brambles, ho hum!

Done the last 17 miles as a recce run with Mark (one of the organisers), so at least I know that bit - assuming I get that far image

Looking forward to it I think, training has gone reasonably well apart from an achillies problem last week, but I'll be on the start line - it's my first ultra and I wouldn't miss it for the world image
