Thanks for the tip Tom1759. An elevation profile would be very useful as could then adapt my training to suit, I.e knowing at what stage in the race hills need to be tackled.
well looking at the course using the google earth map there seems to be a sharp climb coming out of the village of Luddington (approx 15metres) followed by a long slow descent. Then there's a long slow climb out of Welford on Avon (approx 33metres).
The rest of the course has minor undulations.
I can't find any mile markers on the maps so it's hard to work out at what distance these hills are at.
It must be around 5 - 6 miles first time round then as the first lap is the same as the half marathoners. The second lap diverts just after the slow climb.
The first and second laps are not identical, there's considerably more greenway section on the second loop, I seem to remember the long slow climb on the half being a little past halfway, say 7-8 miles in?
Yeah sounds about right. There are different colours maked on the map to show the 1st loop (same as 1/2 marathoners), 2nd loop with greenway extension, plus the start and finish sections.
This is a super marathon although not the easiest youll do. A couple of tough points are its multiple lap which are always mentally challenging and for the first lap you need to be carefull not to race the half marathoners, once they finish your pretty much on your own. I ran miles 13 to 15 on my own with not a runner in sight.
There are some decent hills but i think that sorts out the men from the boys!! As for the greenway the second lap you run on it for longer but come on guys at least its straight!! The last mile is a bit back and fourth with a 800m hairpin, i found that harder than the greenway.
Oh yeah, on the greenway you can hear the screams for miles of people who are finding it harder than you!!
My time? 3:13 which i was happy with and went on to knock of 10 mins 2 weeks later! That how tough i found it!!
Not bad Luke, Sunday was the first time I thought I'm actually going to be able to do it, (after my long slow run of 27k) prior to then, the thought of running 42k was A bit dounting! Where you from mate?
After last year I said I'd never do another one and bless me i've just signed up again. Loved the banter and some of the villages are lovely-as previously stated don't get carried with the halfers (like i did) and don't stop for a pee at the bottom of the hill 2nd time around. Just lookng to do better than last year.
Just over 7 weeks to go, this training cycle seems to be going really quickly for me, and more importantly, going really well. No injuries to talk of, and hitting all my target paces and distances without too much difficulty. In fact, it's going too well, something is bound to go wrong soon!!
I'm aiming for a 4:15 finish, gonna try and run at a consistent 9:30 pace, and allow myself a bit of leeway to slow down going up the hills.
I struggled with a knee injury for months n months after the great north run last year & only started seriously training for this 5 weeks ago. Feeling positive about it! It'll be a good experience and preparation for snowdonia in October! So I'm not really going to beat myself up about getting a fantastic time in this one, just want to finish with no injuries & ENJOY it ) roll on Sundays 18 miler lol
Yeah I've got an 18 miler this Sunday too. So far so good on the injury front. I had a niggle in my hip a couple of weeks back which felt suspiciously like an ITB injury I suffered with a while back. I had to cut a long run short just to play it safe. Plenty of ice and all seems good, fingers crossed.
Jay, I'm looking for 3.45. You should join us on the sub 3.45 thread. Some friendly people on there and some great training tips too

Thanks for all the advice guys. You have convinced me this is the one for my 1st marathon so I have entered it. Better keep the training up!!!
See you there if you're running.
