Meldy - think I'll do my pool tri first before making a bigger commitment

    Never entered my head image

  • Drinking ??   Depends who you ask I suspect   image

Contemplating going dry once the IM training kicks in, but I do like a wee glass once in a while

Hell no, if your following Finks 30 weeks dry would be torture, I will still drink but in "moderation" image

  • Hi Spoons, pool tri first before signing up for an IM? That's no problem IMUK 2013 registration doesn't open for ages yet image, plenty of time to think over how you fund this and tell your friends and family

Marathons and cycling sorted, just swimming? At least its the shortest bit, plenty of time to sort that over the next 13 months or so, great that your joining the IMUK 2013 cabin personnel rite of passage to piracy
  • I had a few rum and cokes tonight, first time in ages!
  • Thats a very typical PIrate drink !!!

  • Gas - I can swim OK. I can manage 2.5 km in an hour.

I never drink Mon-Wed. Does that count as tee total?

  • Morning all, good night? image

Anyone up for the Ely monster triathlon in August, this is the one Holgs mentioned the other day.

    http://monsterracing.net/triathlon2012.html

Think i may go for it, wasnt going to spend anymore on events this year but i could drop a couple of planned ones & do this half IM distance instead image

Thing is, because ive got loads of events & stuff on already between now and then will that make sensible training difficult?

I've got 11 weeks to go. 3 weekends i'm away on holiday for olympics stuff (not competing) I'm also on holiday 2 weeks prior to this event.

Considering my current training etc would you think i could manage this ok anyway?
  • Morning all.

That looks like a great event, SD. Not for me this year tho'.

As for whether or not you should do it - well, you can't do every single race out there, you do have to pick & choose! Only you really know what your fitness is like, and how much you're realistically able to  do. And you know that you do have to have proper training time for this, and recovery between events.  So, at the end of the day, it's your call.

But please try not to kill yourself by overdoing it!

  • Sound advice NR. It falls on a really good weekend though. I do the Victory Sprint Tri on 15th July then thats it till the Ely event.

I have a week off Wc 23rd July & 2 weeks off Wc 6th August. Half IM is 19th August.

Week after the above i have the National club champs then nothing till great Barrow challenge (4x125 mile cycle over 4 days) mid September.

I think i know i'm going to go for it image I wont be going for any prizes after all, just look to complete it.

Swim cut off times, is that just based on the time your in the water or is the time up to getting into T1 or away on the bike within the cut off time?
  • Bike question -

I bought my bike early last year, from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op.  I tried 4 different ones there before we (man in shop & me) decided this one was the right size.
The longest ride I've done is 34 miles, and that was at the end of the quadrathlon so I'd expect to feel stiff and sore, but my back starts to get achey and stiff after cycling 10 miles or so.
I should say at this point that I have long-standing, permanent damage to my lower back (that's what 20+ years of nursing will do for you), but since I started exercising regularly it really doesn't give me any trouble.

Should I take my bike back to the shop (or another shop) and ask them to look at the fit again?

Is it just that I need to get used to time in the saddle?

Anyone else out there with a knackered old back who's found a particular type of exercise which helps? (I've heard good things about pilates)

  • Obviously missed an interesting discussion on drinking last night - sorry I was out getting pissed, and was still swimminhg OW at 7:00 this morning!! New wetsuit is fab!! Was even managing bilateral breathing!! image

NR - maybe try a few more rides - you will be putting strain on muscles you haven't used for a while (maybe) so expect a little discomfort. If it doesn't get any better, try getting a re-fit. Or you must have access to some great drugs..... image

Spoons - resistence is futile!! May as well sign up for ExtrvaLanza and get it over and down with!!

And how was Marlow M..eldy? I'll be in Maidenhead tomorrow........

  • NR any exercise which strengthens the core muscles should help with any back pain, I have never done pilates but I believe they are for core strength?

If that fails as Raf says get some drugs, or failing that nick an ultra sound, I had one used on my back when I wrecked mine, it was bliss, it was the only thing that took the pain away, better than sex I would say but perhaps I'm doing it wrong image

  • image I should say you jolly well are

  • The yewf of today...

    Raf - good swimming

    Spoons - what u doing 1st July?
  • Nothing is better than sex BBT, go wash your mouth out with (Nurse?!?)
  • Wash your mouth out with Nurse?

    Well, for an appropriate fee...............................................

  • No actually I was thinking of the coffee type drunk u always refer to but couldn't remember the name mellow....

    Gutter brain
  • How silly of me image

    And it's Mellow Birds
    image

  • Gas - probably Humpty Dumpty 10km but haven't signed up yet. There is free beer at the end image
  • Gas - I may bike down there, do the race, grab a beer, bike back. Only 70 miles round tripimage
  • I'm liking your style Spoons, but basically you're not available to volunteer at the outlaw then... So I guess that's it you're in for next year, yes?
