What a fabulous running day!  I decided to do 14 miles just to make the most of it... though it wiped me out for the afternoon image.  So tired!

I wore shorts only and could really feel it in the legs after only a few miles.  This has pretty well convinced me that the tights do make a difference.  I hadn't realised quite how cold it was when I set out, but it was icy over the hills.  My legs felt like lead coming back up the hills and through the mud from mile 10 - 12.  I'm out of practice on the hills and it showed.  To think I was running 20 miles on much the same route back in March/April.  Very enjoyable run nonetheless, and time will tell whether my kness decide to rebel again.  I'm having to hold the bannister on the stairs again image

I wish I was at the pace of most of you guys!  6:30mm is my fastest ever - for one mile only and on a treadmill.

Bo - I had a brief spell of calf trouble and sorted it in no time at all with a foam roller.

Good result Choisty, great time. I did Gosport a couple of years ago, boring course but fast.

Oscarr hope you are feeling better?

Not seen Luke on here for a while, is he still about ?

Just getting back into a running routine, only 5 weeks to go before my last marathon of 2012!! Got a few weeks to fit in some decent 16-20 mile long runs and the a small taper.

Entered the Downton Half which is next Sunday just so I can keep my at least 1race for every month of 2012 going!!

Missed the Asics comp this year, will try again next year.

    Wow Choisty!  Wow Ben!

It was so glorious out there today, I had a fab hilly trail run on ledges and everything!

So tired now - did 25 miles from Fri evening to this afternoon.  Gosh.  Easyish to be fair, very light on pace as we were a mixed group.

Ten - wouldn't worry - you're faster than me!!  I will never be that fast and certainly not over anything as short as a mile!

    FH - bad luck!

reiki - that sounds lovely - good effort on the miles!

Random thought for mcs (who I think was asking about psychology books a little while back).  Do you know about this one? It's written by the guy who looks after the likes of Wiggo and Victoria Pendleton...

Heard a lot about this Chimp, from the Sky riders all talking about the chimp in the head, might take a read........
Great running and times well done to all.  Choisty Mr Speedy and Ben too awesome times.
Had  an hour yesterday after chopping wood for two hours so managed a sunny but cold 7.33 miles run. Have a good week.image

I think the Chimp is similar to the Central Governor that Fitzgerald talks about - the bit in the mind that you need to train to stop it shutting you down too early.

My chimp likes chocolate ... and ... cake - that keeps him quiet! image

Chilly here in Derbyshire this morning. Leaves blowing off the trees. My central governor likes curry!! Yum and Nespresso coffees x 2 in the AM.......image

My central govenor tells me I run too much and should spend more time with her and the kids, especially on Sunday mornings! etc.....

The chimp in our house is a small cheeky boy who likes nothing more than a good scrap with his dad, and there is no shutting down early!

Great runs - Choisty & Ben

My central governor had me re-modelling the kitchen on Sunday so missed the perfect weather.

Oh well, I was out XC'ing on Saturday though............so can't win 'em all.

My chimp is always up for a protracted and reasonable discussion at around mile 17.

So far it has come out 50/50 so it knows it's always worth suggesting.

Speaking of books, I received *The Art of Running Faster* by Julian Goater & Don Melvin, just started reading thus morning on the train, can't edit to get back to it. So readable, gorgeously written - the main bloke (JG) is an RAF man and Oxford graduate, win the English Nationals in 1981.

    I love a good story.

Had an hour on the Alter G thus morning, another progression run, today with two hills! I am loving this toy, no illusions about how easy it is at 70%, but am getting my feet way more flicky uppy.

    And no pain.

Guys sorry about my posts from the phone! I should survey them prior to sending really!

RR - I bought that book after listening to the interview with Julian on marathon talk.  I'm working on getting my mileage up to a more consistent level.  Hill sprints is a step beyond for me at the moment - too risky!  I must have another read to refresh my memory of his good advice.

I started using progression runs while following Bo and Emma this year.  They are a great way to make long runs more interesting.

    Don't mention pain.

My shoulders are rather sore this morning after wielding a splitting axe on a load of rounds of silver birch 8am till 10 ish. My legs are fine after a run, must run more and split logs less. Just won the new Kindle Paperwhite, though not available until December from Scottish Power. Answered a survey for Scottish Power. image  Trying to stop my laptop from leaving the cursor behind when I type because when I stop typing it returns to the place I last stopped. Anyone got any ideas driving me bats???

    Hi guys,

Not been on For ages. Been doing my dissertation for a MSc so been crazy busy. Although did find a few of you on Facebook.

Running has been on the back burner since the marathon. Played a lot of squash and a bit of footie but mostly been working, decorating and doing this uni work. Anyway started back training last week and I've signed up for cross country this weekend. It's a 5 mile course in lpool but no idea how to pace it. I guess if I was road running I would b aiming for about 31 mins. Any tips?

Hope everyone is well, in gonna read through what I have missed.

    Good to b back,

    Luke

Good to know your alive Luke! Sounds like you have been busy, which sometimes is a good thing. Just had my busiest week for sales, car sales has gone mad! As a garage we sold 23 cars Friday to Monday, I sold 12 of them. Happy days !

    Welcome back Luke.

FH - well done, i sense another bonus on its way!!

  • Options

I was trying to stay away from axe wielding imagery!

Luke add a minute a mile and enjoy?  Or really just go out and see what happens as you are coming back, so this should be a treat rather than something you have targetted and trained for.

I'm on FB too if anyone wants to link up.

    Hey all

Hi Luke - nice to have you back - with xc the terrain is often the deciding factor.  You have two choices - set off at 5 mile pace and then try to hang on or set off around people that you normally run just behind and then see how you feel at half way and then shoe it to the end.  Try to get there early if you can so you can have a nosy at as much of the course as you can.

FH - good work that man!  We know where to come when we want a new car then image

mcs - yippppppeeeeee imageimage Have you tried defragmenting it?  Sounds like it's running a bit slow...

reiki - I've pmd you my facebook name so we can 'make friends' xx  Mr Goater's book is on my amazon wishlist!

Treadmill day here me thinks - it's biblical at the moment, so to speak!

  • Options
That was fun! Gosh you guys are quick. I'm on the bike here multitasking.

mcs - nice to see that people do actually win prizes in those surveys and they are not all rigged.

SB - don't be a wimp! (say's me on a treadmill day image)

I've had so many people (not specialists) tell me my knee problem is ITB that I'm giving the roller a proper go now.  I'm using it 3-4 times a day now and will continue to do so until the pain is completely gone, or until I've seen the orthopaedist.  It hasn't suffered any ill effect following my 14 mile hilly trail run, so I'm pretty happy that I can at least do steady runs and build up speed gradually.

  • Options

    Reiki - yes, great fun

  • Options

Ten I almost hope it is because the roller works a treat for me, this after years of winding it up, resting it, winding it up again!

Sorted computer setting for my mouse pad.......google anything and you can find the answer these days!!!  Did a four mile interval session to work nd managed three 7 minute miles ouch it was hard work as a head wind too.....got in the shower and then realised no towel, paper towels are not nice!!!! Have to laugh!!image love running when its raining.
Sounds like cars are selling well...the UK market is doing quite well at the moment surprisingly......where does all the money come from.....the children in need collection never goes down amazing.

SB , armed forces get a special discount from vauxhall on new cars !! Everyone how runs gets a special discount on new and used !!

Did my 16, first 13 were really comfortable @ 8:40 ave pace last 3 miles into the wind and rain were tough, finished at 8:45 ave pace. Not run that far for about 5 weeks so good to get it banked.

MCS, never under stand we're the money comes from, more and more races every year and most are full, weird !!

Seen any good vw transporters FH?
Windy here too today and still slashing down!!

About to embark on my run today and I have a question, my autumn racing schedule is now over and after this week of free form do as you please type of running, my thoughts turn to the VLM and base training the trouble is I have never done this before.  So what can you all advise?  I want to be strong a fast ready to start the training plan for VLM proper on boxing day.

  • Options

You have probably been out now!! But reckon you could have a week of slower lower intensity and be fine with your speed. Just cut down to 30 to 40 miles per week for the 5 weeks up to Xmas and you will be fine!image Let us know what you do....interested to see. What time you aiming at for VLM do you reckon?
I am starting out on the road to March 9th and my schedule is marathon pace Tuesday......xt Wednesday Thursday intervals, Friday easy run Sat Xt and Sunday long run........ with maximum mileage in week 13 of 35 miles.....bit lightweight for you guys but prefer to air on the cautious side to avoid injury, its worked this year all fit so far.........
