Well done to all who finished, i count 3 sub-3's so far, and i'm afraid I can't add to that. I ran 3 hr 1 min, and it will stay that way as I was in pen 1.

Familiar story of starting miles too quick and suffering later. I broke the race into 2 10-miles and a 10k, did an insane 63 mins for the first 10, 68 for the next ten so through 20 miles in 2 h 11 but blew up at about 23-24, and ran/ walk/ jogged home. Ouchouch, you probably passed me. Even with 800m to go I could have made it but cramp in both calves and both thighs ruled out a sprint for the line.

But I'm nowhere near as disappointed as I thought I would be, it was a great event that I enjoyed hugely. And I got a Boston qualifier so I can start making plans for a trip there in 2006 or 07.

A very tired Angus checks in with 3:07:40ish. Well done Anthony and Zoe and those who made it - and I reckon a big well done also to all those who posted 3hr+ times today. It is not easy.

I agree with what people have said about the organisation and the crowds. Great.

My own race: on the one hand I feel pleased with a time just about equal to my best despite having to fight major leg cramps from about mile 16 onwards. On the other, a little disappointed to miss the target despite better training, easier course (and higher hopes?)

Looking back, I reckon 3-4 miles of 7:15 at the start - when I was going with the pace around me - put me in a mindset when I felt I had to catch up in the middle section. Probably caught up too much too soon. More conservative strategy may have served better.

Will file away for future ref - and will apply target again for the next mara. I definitely feel there is unfinished business there.

Congrats to all on a fab day.

OuchOuch - yeah - that was me.

Next PR is a sub-3 for you!

Another failure I'm afraid. Respect to the sub3 club. 3:07 (with the longest wee stop in history - damn I never knew a bladder could take so long to empty!!)for me and on the day never really felt it could have been much faster - despite training predicting so. Had a very sore calf from about mile 3(!?!) went through the half a 1:30:50 but never really felt it was on the cards for negative splits. Great experience, helped by the advice/knowledge on here and all in all I'm pleased for a first crack.

I'm off to lose a stone in weight so according to the DN school of predicitions I can't fail.

My official FLM finishing time has me at 2:59:32. Pleased to go sub 3,but was aiming to go a little quicker.

C'est la vie!

Zoe-cogratulations on what can only be described as an awesome time.

The crowds truly were fantastic yesterday,it was my 4th London and i've never seen it like that before.

The most bizarre race of my life. Someone reached down from the sky at about mile 17 and lit the blue touchpaper. Halfway - 1:27:48 Second Half 1:22:32 for a PB of nearly six minutes - miracles do happen.

Well done all! Seems like the vast majority of you either achieved your target or missedit by a fraction - annoying but satisfying all the same to know that you were/are there or thereabouts.

Sadly, I failed MISERABLY!

As Mad Rich said in an earlier post- we were together from about mile 2 and running quite comfortably well within the target- Miles 3 and 4 were a little concerning - 6min 21s and 6min36s - we both commented on this but the guy next to me said not to worry as it was a downhill section and always fast... Anyway - I got to 10miles on schedule andmy calves started cramping - pushed on and got to halfway and my quads were cramping - somewhere just into the docklands loop I stopped to stretch my quad - this only served to make my hamstring cramp...All I could do was hobble on until the cramp had passed and then start running again.

Sadly that was thestory of my run from halfway - run until the cramps came, walk itoff, then run again...

I am abslutely devastated 'cos I know it wasnt a fitnessissue- whenever I was running I was running well... I do, however, havemy theory as to what went wrong.

This timeroundI'd followed all th advice -carbloading (which I havent done before), cutting back the meat and protein etc. etc... AND DRINKING LIKE A FISH. In the final teo days I never had a bottle of water out of my hand...It's my theory that I had watered down my bodies electrolyte/salt levels. I'd also failed to study the label on the energy gels - I had assumed them to be concentrated formsof isotonic drink- not so - the maxim energy gel waspretty much 100% glucose.

So - all in all a devastating result for me - 3hrs 48mins. Quite possibly theworst experience of my life.

To make matters worse- the left knee problem I have been having on andoff now feels permanent- strongly suspect its the cartilage- very, very stiff and sore with excrusiating pain when it is bent- particualrly whilst sat down(behind and just on top of the knee cap)

A&E for me!

Well done everybody.

well done everyone, I'm sure there would have been a few more successes had the weather been a bit cooler.

I managed 2.59.03, which I'm extremely pleased with as I never felt totally right out there for some reason.

I don't have a fancy watch so only have the 10k split times on the web site. 41.41 - 41.44 - 41.44 - 43.45.

Hail Hail

Morning all. Mr very sore legs here!

Right. First things first. Having never done either Paris or FLM before, and having a bit of an aversion to all things London-like, I can catergorically state that FLM is by far and away the best marathon I have EVER EVER EVER done! The organisation is superb, the course (dull East End or not) is great, the comraderie is fantastic, and the level of support is just simply UNBELIEVABLE!!!! The whole 26.2 miles I did not see a gap in the crowds, and the level of noise is just intense.
I used to think that all the fancy-dressers were not in the spirit of running, but I was wrong. FLM may not be everybodys favourite race, but it IS what running is all about. All levels, all abilities, all enjoying themselves. If you dont want to run beside somebody dressed as a rhino, or Mr Incredible, or a sexy nurse(with a moustache!) then that's fine. Don't do FLM. But if you do want to be part of the world's biggest running family, then FLM is the one (and best one) for you. Simply superb.

BTW - finished in 3.12, and given the heat, Paris the previous week, and Nell McAndrew for 2 miles, I'm quite pleased with that. Next time, no Paris beforehand, and a sub3 WILL be mine!!

Well done everybody!!
• Options
JH, my run felt like yours - one long battle with cramp. Tho for me, from about mile 16 onwards! Hope your knee settles down - and that you find some expert help for it.

Anyone else able to support or disprove JH's theory on cramping?

Am interested, in that - having shared the early cramping problems - I also did a far longer and more diligent hydration routine in the preceding days than I have done before.

However, and still perhaps a more likely cause for me, I got my pacing wrong.
• Options
RB, well done on your run too - especially after Paris and all. Agree 100% about the support around the course.
Like you, I'll be shooting for a sub3 next time (maybe at an Autumn marathon?). Bring it on!

I have followed this thread from afar as I wanted to do a sub three. My previous best was 3hr16 at last years event.

I had a great race even though it was tough concentration and determination. My final time was 2hr55m26s. A pb by 21minutes

My 10km splits were

10km 41.07
20km 41.18
30km 41.35
40km 41.55

Pretty damned consistent,

Many congratulations to everyone and to those that just missed out you still recorded great times

JH
Your times look similar to mine, and you suffered at much the same point. All my long runs (18-22 miles) had been completed in temperatures just above freezing, and usually without a drink. With a 3 hour journey to the start (including the extremely hot train out of Charing Cross) I guess I should have drunk much more in the first half of the race. In the second half I must have downed 4 or 5 bottles of water plus 2 lucozade and despite many more drinks after the race, I still didn't go to the loo until about 8pm!
How much did others consume during the race?

Add me to the list of 'so close' but yet so far. I was cooking along quite nicely, despite the RW pacer's attempts to fartlek the first ten miles of the marathon from the blue start. As soon as I stoppd paying attention to him, I hit 6:50s from mile 9 to mile 23 (give or take a few seconds).

Then the wheels came off at the 40km marker where I slowed, almost in instantaneously to 7:30 m/m and stayed there till the line. The upshot? A chip time of 3:00:42.

Simply a case of not enough long miles in training i think. Had the pace and the discipline but just not the endurance in the quads. Lessons learned well for next time.

I've been following your Sub 3 comments with interest up to the big day, so here are some words of encouragement to those that failed this year. In my 1st marathon I clocked 3:00:23 in 2004 and was as you can imagine pretty gutted to get so close to the magical barrier. Luckily I got back in to the 2005 race through the ballot and with added determination put in more training over the winter in reperation for this year. My result for 2005 ? 2:55.47.
• Options
I'd second that Jeffrey. Yesterday was my 13th marathon. For the first 10 my times were between 3:32 and 3:04 - with smarter training and perseverance great improvements are possible.

I just discovered what my 20 mile stomach pain was - quick visit to GP and he's confirmed I have some sort of tear or pull in my left lower abdomem. Off to physio for me later!

Well atleast theres good reason for my slowing down over the last 6.2 miles!

Sub 3 will have to come next year i guess, or maybe in the autumn. Doing Edinburgh in 8 weeks but thats more of a fun-run for me - if a marathon can actually be fun! doing it with a friend, who just wants to complete a marathon in no given time. I'm guessing Edinburgh will be too hot and hill to do a sub 3 at my current level anyway...

Time to start an FLM 2006 sub 3 thread? :o)

Hi everyone, haven't read back yet but congrats to all, whatever the results. Will have a proper read in a minute.

I had a superb run - 2:58:10, 959th. Very chuffed all round, slowed a bit in the last 10k but finished feeling strong. Most importantly, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.

Another bit of news - got engaged to my girlfriend yesterday evening. A great end to a great day! She's a forumite too (we met through the socials), I've started a thread in the URWFRC area too.

Congrats again everyone! We're off to celebrate now :-)

YES... just made it 2:59:48.

Decided to go for the risky "time in the bank" strategy. Went through half in 1:25:46, so when the inevitable cramp came i'd got time to stop twice and stretch.
