There's an incline about 3 miles in (London Street, I believe), then Kendrick Road (reasonable hill), later on a sharp descent towards Whitley Wood, then a nasty but short climb on Basingstoke Road, followed after the town centre by Russell Street (the killer), after that there's a final short but sapping incline about 10 to 11 miles in before the long flat haul along Portman Road.
I think the course is best described as undulating. None of the hills are as bad as the Henley Half Heartbreaker or the ones in the Marlow Half, but they're testing. But not insurmountable. Enjoy!
no, it's probably not a PB course in that it's not flat like the Wokingham. And it does get crowded in places. But you never know - it does have a big event atmosphere so maybe you'll get carried away.
Although, as I gaze lovingly at Snicks' piccie, I can't help thinking that if they had one of them as pacer just a little bit ahead of the pack ... it'd certainly spur the Welsh contingent to PBs, I would've thought ...
Achilles - its not a pb course, but it is where I got my pb! (I'm a lot slower than you - 1.27).
The hills are not much really, except for the short sharp(ish)climb on Basingstoke road. The worst thing about that one actually is that it is just after a water station and I got stitch!.
The problem with the first, long climb is the crowds - you need to get out fairly fast and use the straightish, flat section from Caversham Bridge (the first mile and a half) to get clear of crowds before the twists and turns though the town centre.
After that you have a pretty steady mile and a bit climb up to the university (which is flat). Shortly after this there is a long, fast descent through the lovely, aromatic Whitley, then flat until the Basingstoke road climb. Theres a drop down into town again after that, and at this stage (8 to 9 miles) Reading Road Runners who have been taking it easy start to move past.
The last climb mentioned is nothing really, and over before you notice. The last couple of miles are flat and fast.
thanks for your detailed elevation maps, Johnny and Muttley - I'm starting to panic now. haven't done nearly enough proper hillwork this year and I can see I'm going to get hammered by those "inclines" :-( I think I'll stick at the back with you, EP.
I'd love to see you guys finish but you'll be changed and in the pub before I stagger down the last straight. That was the good thing about Brighton I actually got to see the front runners in action.

Now to get fit...
anyone know anything about these "hills" that they suddenly mention in the race notes???? I thought this was meant to be a flat course.
insider information much appreciated.

Remember my motto: It doesn't matter how fat and slow you are. There's always SOMEONE even fatter and slower...
