LOL PSC! How's the job hunting/interviews going?
  • Options
Cas - hopefully I'm nearly there. I am now waiting for a final "yes/no" from one company (had 5 x interviews with this particular company) and really hope it's a yes as the company looks great and the guy I will be working for seems to be a top bloke!

I've still got a few other options - a final interview with another company coming up on Friday and 3 other interviews lined up if these two fail!

    It's a real game isn't it....

Good news is that I've currently got time on my hands to (a) run, (b) spend time with my son, (c) chat on the forum.... hee hee!!

    Thanks for asking!!

    PSC - Fingers crossed then!

Bella - sorry for hi-jacking your thread.

yes..... (bella).... back to wonky knees!!

Not sure if I said anything about my pod - biomechanical gait analysis is an absolute must. Make sure it's a pod who knows about running and make sure they have video/computer kit. My analysis was done on a screen on a frame by frame basis and really showed up how my knee collapsed inwards as it took up the weight on the heelstrike!! Sounds revolting, but, with the aid of exercises (dips for knees and standing on one leg for ankles) the knee is collapsing a lot less than it was!!! It also showed up that I had been running 25 miles a week in the wrong shoes (thanks Sweat Shop)!

    :-)

Mine showed that I land on my forefeet my knees also collaspe inwards and on my badly afffected leg the ball of my foot and my big toe take the full force.

I'm off to see my husbands chiro for a second opinion as my sports therapist said my left leg is shorter but pod has measured it three times. An osteo I saw briefly last week said my pelvis was twisted.

Good news about being able to do 6 miles Bella- hope you get the cause identified soon.

Top tip abouthow to deal with hills - I live in a hilly place but can't actually run very far at the moment without lots of discomfort.

is this the tri-band pat strap thingy that was refered to in an earlier post? Has anyone worn one? I've tried a knee support from Boots and found that it rubbed the back of my knee badly. Couldn't wear it past the end of my road before taking it off and throwing it in the back of cupboard never to be seen again (£20 wasted)!!

    Hi Bella,

I too live in the Aylesbury area and have recently had ITBS, which I have suffered now for 2 months with. Although the physio has helped with the pain management I still find that I have pain when running after about 3 miles. So I went to see a foot specialist who analysed and videoed my gait and put all my important data into a computer system and came out with the shoe type I required and which body parts needed particular strengthening and more support. I have since been prescribed new orthotics for my trainers to fit my feet and this really has helped. The pain has not gone totally, but it is slowly but surely. The guy is based in Bicester.

How's the knee, I suffered for a few months after my knee went during a marathon but have found this stretch quite good one to try as well.

Hi everyone im so glad i found this thread, at last others who understand how frustrating ITB problems are.
I started getting pain about 6 weeks ago bang in the middle of what was perfect training for my 1st half marathon.
after weeks of frustration i booked myself into a physio who advised it was my itb he has given me stretches to do and he has also suggested a deep massage i was considering getting this done 2 days before the race but ive since heard it is extremly sore ?? can anyone advise
I have been back out running and went 10 miles on sunday (i was delighted) i strapped my leg just with some tubi grip and what a difference hardly any pain at all!!!!!!!!!!
PSC - im with you on the hills i love running up them but have taken to walking down them .... people must think we are mad.
any advise on the massage will be greatly appreciated

    LF - Welcome

ITB massages are very deep and yes it hurts but don't let that stop you. Why two days before? I thought that usually the ITB needed a course of deep massages to get it to loosen up.

I'm not running at the moment as running even for short periods really inflames my ITB - have you had your gait analysed by a podiatrist to see if there are any underlying biomechanical causes?

I wouldn't advise running through the pain it eventually gets worse - maybe you shouls consider some cross training.

Good luck with your race - is it soon?

Apart from stretches and self ITB massage while watching telly (not nearly as painful but helps keep it less tight!!) I tried turning my foot inwards while running and walking (after reading ChiRunning) as my foot naturally points slightly out the way. Takes a bit of concentration to remember to constantly do it but I find on long runs just turning my foot in a bit (so it sits straight ahead) alleviates the soreness quite a bit and I've not had nearly as much heavy duty problems wtih the ITB problem.

Hi SE the race is on sunday !!!! the nerves are beginning to creap in
I only got my 1st physio appointment 2 weeks ago so unfortunately its down to lack of time before the race and cash.

Once this race is completed (PMA kicking in there)I will start looking at what is the underlying issue I will def. be taking up your advise and not running through it as I dont want to risk further damage.

sideshow I seem to kick my heal slightly inwards when i run so now i am aware of this i have noticed a difference but like yourself it does take a bit of concentration to keep it up for my whole run.

Do the majority of ITB sufferers get over this or is it usually a recurring problem ???
  • Options
I think once you've identified the underlying cause its easier to manage. Most ITB suffers tend end up wearing orthotics from what I can gather.

You've done incredily well with your mileage so I would save yourself for the race on Sunday. Ice any sore bits and keep doing your stretches.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi all - loads of really useful advice & info on here. Many thanks everyone, and I hope others are finding it a help too.
I went to see a new physio on Tues who after a 2 hour MOT has given me a thorough run-down on my biomechanics. My left leg is slightly shorter than my right, which seems to be the root of it all. I also over-pronate slightly, have high arches and am a classic candidate for ITBS, with high potential for shin splints (which I have suffered in the past). She's given me some orthotics, and plenty of exercises, and has also advised me against running for a month(!!!!) which I am finding hard to deal with. I can swim, cycle and continue yoga though.
So, I am gutted that I have no hope of finishing my 1st marathon (next month in Anglesey)but also relieved to be told my problem is treatable and manageable. I am going to continue seeing a local physio for massage, ultrasound etc, and will see how I get on with my orthotics!
I'd better go and dig out my goggles!

I've hardly been able to runn at all over the last 8 weeks - every time I've tried to I get a really bad flare up.

I'm getting my orthotics tomorrow so I'm hoping this is going to make a big difference. I was told that my left leg was shorter than my right but it turned out my pelvis was misaligned and I'm having some chiropractic treatment for that.

I'm glad you are feeling much more positive Bella

It sounds like we're in a similar state! At least we're getting sorted though. Are you doing much other exercise? I hope the orthotics help.
  • Options
BB - could you give me the details of the Bicester pod you mentioned please?

Other than stretching and strengthening and some walking I've not done any other exercise. Some of my aches and pains have started to settle down. I'm going to ask my chiropractor this afternoon if I can do some aerobics.

Orthotics felt surprisingly comfortable and I was struck by a distinct lack of knee pain whilst walking around the supermarket.

I've been advised to spend 2 weeks getting used to them I suppose the real test will come when I return to running.

well ive completed my first half today in 2hrs 27min
I strapped both my knees up with tubi grip and really concentrated on the way I was running and ran through in not a lot of pain but as soon as i stopped running i could hardly move.

been stretching and icing and using plenty of ibuprofen gel all day today

going to take a couple of weeks and really focus on recovery and start increasing my mileage at a slower rate fingers x.

You definately need to identify the underlying cause otherwise you will keep getting flare ups and I don't want to depress you but they get worse.

i've ordered a pattstrap to try and help with my recent onset ITBS-will let you know if it helps when it arrives-only avail mailorder from the USA.

I've ordered a pair as well. I tried doing the Walt Reynolds Special yesterday but I think I wound up my ITB is a bit sore.
  • Options
    What's the Walt Reynolds special?!

Well done on finishing LF - I agree with Edwina though - you need to treat the cause.
  • Options
Thanks for all the great advise will definately be finding out what is causing it because it is such a frustrating thing to suffer from especially when training was going so well

good luck to you all and i will keep you posted

Its a strengthening exercise for your ITB - I thought someone posted a link to it earlier in ths thread. You are supposed to stand on a step let your unaffected leg dangle, bend your affected leg slightly and place the weight on the outside of your affected foot then you tilt you pevis backwards and forwards. However I don't think you are supposed to do it whilst you still have pains - either that or I was doing it wrong. However I hurt myself :-((

Apologies LF I meant to congratulate on your race.

Walts Special - Have a look at Jules post on the 27/08/06 - there is a link. Must learn how to do that.

doh, I must have missed that post. Thanks.

whilst waiting for my pattstrap to come, i found a similar thing made by an american company called Futuro on sale in a chemist here in Hobart so the same thing may also be available in the UK-on the box it's described as "Futuro Sport Adjustable Knee Strap".
i went out for a 20 min run tonight after work wearing it; 2 weeks ago i did 1 mile after which i was unable to run; tonight so far no ill effects, so i'll try a little further tomorrow.
  • Options
Just remember its not a cure but sounds hopeful. I'm currently breaking in some orthotics, which I hope will really help. Hardly any knee pain today but there is a tight sport in my glutes.
  • Options
I think I might try one of the knee straps - I'd try anything to be honest!

SE - How are you getting on with the orthotics? Until I start running again, it's hard to say if mine are having much effect. My knee is certainly no worse but I only usually feel it after a couple of miles - although had also been feeling tightness when walking. Do you get pain just walking?

I am absolutely desperate to go for a run tonight - feel like my wings have been clipped!
