Why can the English not have a vote for independence too, why is it always the Scots, Irish and Welsh (and Cornish) that want their freedom - why can't we have it too?
I think the English should vote to see if we want to keep Scotland or not (and Wales and Cornwall). If Scotland do gain independence then do the English have to invade them again ?
Would we (England, Wales and NI) have to rename the United Kingdom / Great Britain ? Change the flag remove the St Andrew cross from the Union Jack.
I had to contact the British Embassy today, will the Scots be allowed to use it after independence or would they require their own embassy ? Who is going to hold a Scottish passport ? People born in Scotland, people living there. A Scot could have be born in London, moved back up north (or not), it doesn't matter which side they cheer on during the 6 nations, officially would they be Scottish or English ? What about driving licenses ?
I don't think the English can be proud of their past towards Scotland but independence isn't looking forward.
I was thinking more about the pros and cons for them. Like they wouldn't need any military at all. One woman was on TV saying that by getting more migrants into the country paying taxes the old people in scotland would be better off.
One aspect of Scotland becoming independent that I never hear mentioned is the effect of losing all the Scottish MPs currently in Westminster - 41 are Labour and only 1 Conservative - making a Conservative majority in Westminster a lot more likely (for good or bad).
Except Hadrian's Wall is in Northumbria - so do we get ownership of half of Geordie land too?
I think if Scotland do vote Yes it will be a total and utter economic mess for the next 25 years.
As an English born person living in Scotland for the last 20yrs, I think it would be a very sad state of affairs for the UK to split up - and would bring economic ruin to Scotland. They talk of increased social welfare, removing bedroom tax, lower pension age, child care etc, but no mention of how we will pay for this other than the usual 'the oil will pay for it' - these policies will get them the vote from those reliant on benefits. But we can predict what will happen to the rest of us - the poor will be poorer, and those of us on low earnings will be squeezed further and paying for it all. The rich will find the usual ways of avoiding taxes, or take their business out of the country.
In reality this situation should never have come about, because the Scottish Parliament voting system was supposed to be designed so that one party would never get a clear majority . However, a few years back when loads of us were hacked off with Labour, we all voted SNP, and the SNP won by a clear majority. One of their policies was always going to be the Independence referendum, but IMO I don't think they ever thought it would come to this - and now they have the chance they don't know what to do with it.
Get rid of the forces and trident. That would pay for a lot. Scotland could end up like one of those forward thinking Scando countries. Although paying a tenner for a beer might not go down too well.
Actually some of the SNP's polices have been really good over the past few years - no prescription charges, and Nicola Sturgeons health policies when she was in that post, I think have been a real benefit to a lot of people here.
But I think what a lot of us were voting for was 'Devo-Max' not total separation.
If any Scots want to know what independence will be like and how likely the so called white paper is likely to deliver, they'd do well to read up on Salmond and Trump International Golf Links Scotland.
The Should get what they vote for but im not sure anyone knows what that is? Salmond seems to think he's some kind of Jesus and can feed the whole of Scotland on a few fish and loaves of bread? Their argument just doesnt stack up.

It's up to them.
The wall has never been taken down.
Love you too Nick *mwah*

We could end up getting it by default.

Why? People from other nations live in England and we don't expel them.
I'd be surprised if any Scots could remain sober long enough to make it to the polling station.
🙂

What for? In case Rangers get back in the SPL?
The US became independent of Britain and fought a war to do so - but we don't tell Americans they can't live in England.
If I was Scotch I would want independance if it meant no Trident, no military and get to keep the oil.

It's mentioned a fair bit actually. On the BBC news website only yesterday.
If Scotland does get independence, there would be a lot of building work to do, rebuilding Hadrian's Wall.

Are you saying it's all your fault then?

LOL - yeah, we got what we voted for...

As a matter of interest, if SNP lose the referendum what is to stop them having repeat runs until they get the "right" answer?
Well, we have waited for 40 years for another vote on Europe(and still counting). So, I don't think it will become an annual event.
Is a vote for independence, a vote for the SNP though?
Isn't that a vote for having your cake and eating it?
