To EVERYONE who took part in this - I am gobsmacked at your achievements (DNF or no, Hipps!).
Worryingly, I'm also a little attracted to this. My parents used to take me on incredible hikes across the Moors when I was a wee one.
Will probably wait until I have much more experience before I try anything like this though - I just attempted a 5k on Blackheath on Sunday and was very chuffed with my little medal...
So we have 3 out 4 for the High Peak early next year. Excellent. I sure a 4th will appear in due course.
Troggy B -if it is pitch dark how do you know it is stones you are tripping over, and if you dont that for sure then maybe you didnt trip over at all. A ha that is logic for you!
I sure we will have a wail of a tie.
I know it gets full up by the end of January it is quite popular
Sluggie the name doesnt ring a bell, but I am sure I would recognise his face - then again there were over 190 brits out there, and after a few days we were all hallucinating anyway!
High peak marathon, early March, sounds possible. I'll be back training for some fast marathons I hope after 24 hour race over the new year so it'll be a bit like Saturday was-getting my endurance back. I think you might put my name down for that one.
Have you seen the kit list? We need to carry a tent that can take 4 people, at least one sleeping bag and a bivvy bag each. Its a techies dream this one. Its also quite local for me!!
Glad to see I've created some interest in Swaledale. It's on June 11th next year (see www.swaledaleoutdoorclub.org.uk) and I'll be there either running or marshalling. The Saltergate circuit is organised by one of the fell rescue organisations, but not Swaledale - probably Cleveland.
Thanks Liz - found it - it's Scarborough Search and Rescue http://www.sdsrt.org.uk (sorry, haven't worked out how to do links yet). Enjoyed LW, thinking I try this if I don't do Cardiff mara on the Sunday(depends on work plans). TB's team could use it as training, or is there too much daylight? Hipps - could be revenge on the North York Moors?
hippy - The Lyke Wake has been gnawing at me for over 30 years. My 1st attempt was when I was 12 years old. I set out with my sister and her party at night. I dropped out exhausted at at Clay Bank while the rest of the party completed the walk in 14 hours. Though I eventually did the walk both ways I took 16/17 hours to complete and my sis liked to remind me of this.
So saturday's event has laid that ghost for me and you KNOW you'll have to do it again some day.
I don't have to do it ever again........ except that I loved it and want MORE!!
Hipps, have just read your long report and I'm filled with admiration. To have the courage and determination to press on in such awful conditions and with no-one to spur you on is an amazing achievement. There's no shame in not finishing - the fact that did as much as you did is incredible, especially on virtually no food and directly following a house move and a night on-call.
I know you're always hard on yourself, and have issues with self-esteem. But reading this, you have no reason to feel anything but proud of your achievements. You may not be the fastest on these forums, but your willingness to have a go is to be greatly admired and respected.
There are a lot of people here who would give anything for some of your fighting spirit. Respect to you, and very well done.
Ill respect the North York moors in future, thats for sure
I would have finished actually, if my dad hadnt been waiting since 5 to pick me up To finish the walk rather than the race would have only been aniother 1.5 miles-though it would probably have taken me an hour to walk that
Loz/Tim I have some photos featuring the 7.30 starters from the Lyke Wake. If you want copies I'll email them. (You'll have to email me first so I can reply as the forum email doesn't have attachments) There's a website for forum photos - I might put them on there as well if no one minds) Will post this on both threads
