    Brilliant CP16 and being Welsh myself a good feeling to know there's some fresh young talent in that little part of the world:o)

    BR, he would, but he's reffing a footy game, so I will have to battle the elements yet again! I think I'll take my MP3 to distract me. I don't normally run with music especially on my long runs, but will do so tomorrow.

    TMR - glad you had a good run.

    Just been talking to my son on the phone in London. He's got tickets for himself and my husband to see the Rolling Stones in Wales in August. They also plan to go to Finland for the Rally. My son is also trying to talk me into coming over for the Brussels Marathon? Does anyone know much about it? It will be your summer won't it - don't think I want a hot marathon.

    Hilly, the fields in the big XC races are much more competetive than most road races, as they include lots of young runners, and track and short diestance specialists.

    BR <maybe that's for 2007 - one step at a time...> not sure what you mean ? Just checking my diary I've only had one day off this year, so far ?

    Blisters, it was a lovely sunny day at Leamington, and I only noticed the wind on my legs was quite cold a few times. And I'd pop that blister now, so it can dry and heal a bit overnight.

    CP, that's a brilliant result for you. Well done. i bet you are really looking forward to the summer season as well, now.

    Just back from my second run. Intended to be a shortened version of a usual route, but turned out not to be much shorter - 7.45,instead of intended 5-6ml, and 15.5 for the day. Ah well, as someone says, miles make champions !

    BR, I don't normally take a mp3, I tend to use it when on the treadmill. I think I've only ever worn it once outdoors, but might take it tomorrow, I'll see what I feel like in the morning. I bet it gets left at home though:o) I normally like the solitude of running with just the sounds around me!

    Do you listen to music on the run then?

    Yes for most runs unless I'm running with someone or running a hard session where I need to concentrate. On some morning runs I don't as I delberately want to clear my head for the day. At those times one singer would talk about needing `a dump truck mama to unload my head':-)

    Less so in summer and in the daylight, but certainly for grim winter runs round the streets of Barnsley.

    TmR - it was an ironic comment that I still can't get my head round taking a rest day:-)

    I'm quite fortunate that my training routes are actually quite attractive. Although on dark winter morning/nights one can't see to appreciate. But I'd never run with earphones in in the dark.

    Funny that. I don't think of it in that way I just normally love to listen to the sounds of the birds/trees/waves:o) Although on the treadmill I need something to distract me. I have a vivid imagination that works well with music!

    Hard to say, all my training and race buddies finished almost 100 positions ahead. Suprised about our 2nd scorer (#107) who was behind me in the Middx XC, good result.

    BTW JFB's (=XC specialist) result is very good, in front of our top man, who is a low 33 mins 10k runner.

    Here it's the sounds of the lorries, abuse and not much else.

    Although to be fair there's very little abuse here.

    On Thursday we were running up the longest hill in Barnsley (remember it, Tom?) when 3/4s of the way up some youths with baseball caps and white tracky bottoms appeared out of an estate and said `keep it up mate you're doing well'!!

    Hilly, its not just that the senior run with vets and sometimes U20s as well, but far more of the seniors are in their 20s than I reckon are in road races.

    On days when I'm running well and feeling good, I certainly don't need background music, but on those grimmer days, when it is a struggle and the run seems very long, I sometimes wish I had the distraction of an MP3 player.

    BR, don't you get out into the countryside, even if you run on roads, for your long runs ?. As i remember from my Yorkshire days, they are some quite nice bits even around Barnsley!

    TmR - I do my long runs with company - Fell Liker and a couple of others usually, so no need for distraction then.

    For me ((c) Peter Taylor) it's the same argument as being in a car. I can't stand not having the radio or CD on and driving in silence. For me (it's catching) the music can add to the experience of the surroundings - that's why they use it in documentaries and films.

    For me music makes running very much like dancing and helps me being right 'in the moment', totally focused and associated fully with my body, rather than wandering off a tangent with my mind.

    So its not so much a distraction, but motivation or whatever so the MPs player needs to be full of Chariots of Fire and the FLM theme tune.

    BR - I agree with you (or Peter Taylor) re music. Most of my best runs have a memory of a particular album or track associated with them.

    ah, yes associating or dis-associating, that would be the difference. Perhaps for a hard session then, one needs the CoF, FLM tune type of thing, but for the difficult long run when one needs to pass the time, something which will take the mind somewhere totally different

    Yes! For me it's Franz Ferdinand for long runs and dance music for shorter energy burst.
