Charity I am running for in the LM this next year would be interested in getting involved I am sure. Has that been discussed on this thread sorry not time to read it all, trying to do a bit of work too!
gotta fill in some more spaces first I get. When we are almost there we can look at charities more. Someone may have more idea than me on how to approach this aspect
quite impressed at amount we have potentially got after a day. By mid Jan we might be full enought to work out a timetable even if the odd bit needs filling.
I'm looking at this on a different browser and can't copy and paste.. please can you adjust me so that I am in the Southend to Portsmouth bit.. that covers the Kent and Sussex coast line...
I'd like to try to help make this work by completing a leg. Could do Oban - Fort William 43 miles depending upon timing. Could also do a bit more beyond Fort William following day depending upon the route strategy. I've read all the previous posts and I know people have been edging around the thorny question of on or off road, but after Fort William do you want the baton to go :
Straight to Mallaig by road (circa 42 miles),
Round Loch Eil, passed Corran and down to Glen Tarbert, Salen, Lochailort, Mallaig (cir 120 miles
Round Loch Eil, passed Corran and to Kingairloch by road and then around the (unpopulated and no roads) coast line to Lochaline and so on around the Ardnamurchan peninsular to Mallaig (guessing circa 350 miles much of it very rough and mainly unpopulated).
etc?
I recognise that you want people to sort the sections out themselves, but I think that there does need to be a stated objective in respect of how much does a district planner struggle with off track planning. This is of some interest in England and Wales but of great interest on the West Coast of Scotland. If there isn't a stated strategy, some will feel that others have "cheated" or let the task fail or be diminished because they have a different understanding of the objective.
Perhaps the strategy should be to try to use in cascade order where practicable :
Use coastal paths, promenades, beaches where this is practicable (ideal on the 620 miles of Devon - Cornwall - Devon coastal footpath)
Use Inland tracks
Use Inland roads
rather than blindly stick rigidly to the coastline come what may (but still complying with closed sections because of MoD etc).
Enough detail but hope that this enables Hoose to make a group determination about basic strategy. Still offer to run Oban - Fort William and perhaps more but because I live in Cambridgeshire, don't feel able to take on the planning of an entire district anywhere.
Thanks Offord - your strategy sounds fine. Had something similar in mind due to problems on some coastlines. Some do have frayed edges. Please place yourself on stretch you would like. If various districts heed the guidelines it is defo doable.
sounds like 1/ (mallaig by road)option is easiest and I think acceptible-what do you lot think? Doubt if peops would object to that-still tough and practical. We are still doing a 'round the edges run
Assuming this is going to take some time to get organised, I'd like to volunteer for the East Sussex section and if I have to Kent - although to be honest the coastline there isn't as nice, dungeoness powerstation, lydd airport, gravesend etc!
I should be fully recovered by the time this is ready to roll and for obvious reasons I support Mark Streets suggestion of a charity. x
I'm up for this but can't do 40 miles. Might be able to talk OH into doing 20 miles with me. I like the idea of doing part of the Yorkshire coast, around Whitby or Bridlington even though I don't live there any more - I'm still aYorkshire lass at heart and I like any excuse to go back.
great stuff Soup Dragon. Lovely coast that end- often visit It is fine to do 20 as the more a district has the less each has to do. 40 mile was a guidey thing.

Great - I'll have to drum up some support from the North - come on you lot where's your sense of adventure! Just think how good those fish n' chips will taste at the end of your run!
I hope this actually happens and doesn't die a death like the t-shirt competition. I know its complicated and needs a lot of organising but I'm getting quite excited about the idea! Surely RW towers could help out with some of the logistics, after all it would be great publicity for them.
Yeh - Magpie cafe. I'll be there next week too!!!! If you haven't been you haven't lived.
Oh go on then, but contrary to Cake's suggestion, i'll not do the whole of Scotland if that's okay! With Bala next year, i'm not sure i'd want to do much more than a half mara BUT I could stretch to more if it was post June. Can work out the details later.....
SD -it wont die a death as it is filling quite fast. Once each area has a few runners at least we can split into peops organising districts and route planned etc. One all have done so we can get idea of how many days per area (a week each perhaps) we can set a start/finish. Up to all of us to make it happen as is a forumite type event. Gonna be as hard or as easy as we allow it
