I went to a coached session last night at a local pool, but the coach was absent. I was really fed up, especially as it was cancelled last week, so I’d been waiting 2 weeks in vain to get some feedback on my stroke. Sigh. After people started pouring into the pool and the lanes got choked, I decided to get out and go home before I had a meltdown and went swimming this morning before work. Back to the expensive swimming coach I think.
Just want to ask on here if this is a good idea: I’d like to set up a once a month meeting with the swimming coach and ask him to set me drills and endurance targets then check in with him a month later. So far we’ve been working on technique and I’m going to try to get a session with him this week for him to check my technique and ask him to set me some goals. Is this the best way to utilise a swimming coach’s skills or can people suggest a better structure for me?

FWIW Parky, that's how I thought a Swim Coach worked.

Thanks Schmunks - he didn't suggest that before and I don't like to tell someone their job. What's FWIW?
Parky - How long to have between lessons should be decided on what kind of targets you set/ how hard and easy the targets are and how much time you have to practice etc. For me, a month is a bit much right now but as you've had quite a few lessons, it may work okay.
Sorry I meant 4 weeks would be too far in between lessons. However last time my coach just gave me one thing to practice so 4 weeks of doing that is getting rather boring! I know it's good practice but ideally 2-3 weeks would work best for me right now.
Oops I misinterpreted LN. A month might work well for me, because although I'm managing to swim 3 times a week, the lanes/pools are so crowded, it'll be difficult to practice drills and I'll just have to grab time if there's ever a quiet 5 mins.
Ok, so there I was coming rowards the end of my swim last night when I suddenly started to get a foot cramp in my right foot. Pain in the arch, released as soon as it started with a quick rub whilst treading water but why has it started to happen?
Gaz - obviously I can't speak from experience as I swim such short distances at the moment, but I am reading up a fair bit about technique and have read that your feet need to be relaxed and loose. Have you checked you're not tensing them when you're swimming?
Swimming for the length of time that the tri club swim is new to me and I had cramp for the first time.....so bad that one of the others stopped to offer to help me. It went off but kept coming back.....I just put it down to swimming for so long.
Tonight is tri club night but I am debating whussing out. I fell off the bike on Sunday and it seems that today is the day that every limb is aching. Arms hurt from the jarring, thighs hurt and even my back hurts..........my legs look like the legs of a 10yr old.........black and blue from bruising!!!! Maybe just a curling up on the sofa and a glass of wine instead.
You should go Saffers. Think of all the sympathy you will get when they see your bruises. Got to be worth it - especially if the sympathy comes from a nice, fit guy!
If not, red wine has excellent healing properties. I read it on the internet.
thanks Parklife and angelic.....I have decided to go for the alcohol tonight and go for an "easy" swim at my pace tomorrow. Feeling rather sore......the Snickers bar just consumed hasn't seemed to ease that soreness but thinking the wine will.

I saw this and thought of Bala.....
I hope you have a fab day
FWIW - For what it's worth.
Off to tri club tonight.
Thanks your wishes everyone.
Happy Birthday Soupy!
Tri Club training tonight:
800m warmup - 2 x (200m with PB, breathing 2nd and 3rd, 200m catchups)
6 x 25m sprint/25m easy
4 x 100m fast
4 x 200m fast
4 x 400m (easy/fast/easy/fast)
200m to 400m cooldown.
Total 4100m to 4300m
LJS as usual swam extra, so he finished on 5200m. Wish I could swim half as fast as my man!

Is there anything I can do to help prevent it
Thanks, Gaz
They are Parky, I hardly use my legs during the swim just a very sloooow kick.

Poor you Saffers - it sounds like you fell badly. Maybe a gentle swim would ease things out but I imagine you wouldn't get a gentle swim at tri club.
Your second option sounds good to me. I'd add some chocolate truffles too.

Ah yes. Chocolate. Well known for its anti inflammatory properties.
On a serious note, swimming tomorrow will definitely loosen you up, which will do you good.
