Disagree - sometimes it is used that way - more often that not they are used interchangeably.
Separating sex and gender in the way you are is not unproblematic - but my point is that in this case doing so can give the impression that whilst gender might be open to interpretation or change that sex is somehow one or the other - whereas clearly it isn't.
I do think that the tests need to be done for Semenya's benefit as well. The fact is a lot of people will question like they have done for others and if she can turn around and say No I have been checked and am 100% woman then it will help her. Having sdaid that to have the whole thing debated in front of a global audience when it is very personal is dreadful
I think it's appauling that this is such a huge thing. I heard her on the radio last night basically telling everyone to "go to hell". I agree - I think it's disgusting how this is playing out and how the media are blowing it up.
Whether this comes back that she is a girl or not, she has been insulted and embarrassing far beyond what any 18 year old should EVER be
It basically boils down to incompence and ignorance from the SA athletics federation. They made statements that they are satisfied that she is entirely female while in the same breath making statements demonstrating a total lack of understanding about the possible complexities.
In that link they make some very valid points as stated:
'To put this as simply as possible, there are only four possible scenarios here:
ASA did not do a single test on Semenya. If this is true, they have ignored the controversy, and the very obvious impending situation, and sent her into the Worlds, where this problem was going to surface. In this case, we have a case of neglect and irresponsibility.
ASA did do some tests, but only cursory tests, which they believe sufficed. As we've explained, and many of you have commented, the sex determination test is enormously possible, with a risk of false results. If this is what happened, then it is a case of carelessness. And yet Semenya was sent, without proper process being followed, ASA should be held accountable.
ASA did a very comprehensive tests, or did a minimum level of test, and uncovered that there was in fact grounds for suspicion. If this was true, then there is no way ASA should have entered Semenya, because they knew that a problem would arise. If they did, effectively playing Russain roulette with a young women's life, it would be despicable.
ASA did a very comprehensive test, and discovered no reason at all to doubt her sex. If this was true, ASA would be in the clear, and no problem would exist. I think it's safe to say that this was NOT done, because Cheune would have said so in his interview and this problem would have been managed.'
Erm..that's how is described by a specialist in this field on the radio when discussing this
AND it was discussed on 3 different radio stations by 3 different guys who say the same thing
Going to belive them rather
It's not a case of believing one or the other - it's a case the the word can be used differently in different contexts. It's not wrong to say that gender is sociological and sex is physiological - it's just not entirely unproblematic and it doesn't really simplify anything in this case anyway.
You said "It's NOT about ANYONE saying that she was a man and is now a woman. It is purely a question of whether or not she has XX AND XY chromosomes, which means that she has an "unfair" advantage as competitors can ONLY be "purely" female. "
But like Zanz said in the first page or two of this thread - that's not the case - there are plenty of athletes with xy chromosomes allowed to compete as women - there are even men who have had the sex change op who are allowed to compete as women.
I think it's reasonable to expect people to ask questions if you look and sound like Caster and burst onto the world scene with a WL time.
Doesn't make it any less embarrassing to deal with for the 18yo in question, but I fail to understand why people are so upset with questions being raised, it's simply unreasonable to expect the opposite.

TMW is actually right
Sex is physiological
Gender is sociological

I can´t believe we´ve got some southafricans around and none linked to this yet:
http://www.sportsscientists.com/
Excellent blog from some southafrican scientists and they write sensible things around this matter too.
It's all rather embarrassing, for all parties involved, obviously mostly the athlete.
It basically boils down to incompence and ignorance from the SA athletics federation. They made statements that they are satisfied that she is entirely female while in the same breath making statements demonstrating a total lack of understanding about the possible complexities.
Why do South African's have to link to anything?
Maybe, some cultures are less inclined to link to things?
I find it commendable

I'm too lazy to look back to see if this has been posted already but ....
Caster Semenya is an anagram of 'Yes, a secret man'.
Who'd have thought it?!!!!!!!
Reasonable expectations.
