I think you should def go back to the food/running diary, Tutu.  I'm HOPEless at keeping a running diary - I will if you will...

I find running with my backpack on can cause my stomach to, err, protest... End up undoing the waist bit sometimes, so it bounces about but at least it gives my stomach a break!

Watched the DVD, really enjoyed it. The front two men were incredible, and that was such a battle for first woman. Inspiring stuff.

Find it amazing to see when the men started speeding up - they were already going at less than 5 minutes a mile!!

Barney, just been to the post office to collect a parcel that was too big for the letter box... Thank you both ever so much! Incredibly nice! image It's the little sprog's first hoodie!

Off work today. Going for a 10 mile saunter soon, but faffing first.

Barry - yes it was the Otley 10!

That's interesting - my very fast friend who also ran it last night (in 60.20) rang me afterwards to console me and said he often gets it too when running hills routes.  So perhaps the hills have got something to do with it? I'd never considered that before.

AH - OK ok, let's start doing diaries together!  I'm fine on keeping my running diary up to date, it's the food one I hate. As I know there's no point in doing it unless you put everything down, every last little sweet you accept from someone etc etc.... so time-consuming! (but good, as it makes you think more about what you eat too) Speaking of which - I had THREE chocolate things today, oh dear oh dear oh dear. Mars bar, Chocolate muffin AND chocolate caramel slice. Someone slap me!

ps. woman's finish on the DVD Sooooo exciting! Makes it even more 'real' knowing that we were actually there too, in the same race, just a 'bit' behind them! And I agree about those irritating men hanging round them, especially that one in the blue vest, they MUST have known they would get on telly, grr!
  • Options

ATM - as you may have guessed from my first post, I do happen to quite like my chocolate, so maybe.....?

Hang on, hang on, I gave up chocolate for lent, must read back through diary to see if it happened during that time as I can't remember but don't think it did....and it's happened 3 times since lent ended (end of March?) and I've been back on the choc big time.......image oh no, if I have to give up chocolate in the name of running I will actually cry I think imageimage

    Could be, Tutu...Chocolate's just a lump of lard...Sad, eh?image

It is true chocolate and cheese are just lumps of fat.  However I would rather be slow and happy than quick and miserable.

Glad you like the "Hoodie" Barry, I will pass on your comments to Mrs P.

I am getting into the cycling.  I'm not very quick yet but progressing.  No problems with the legs but after I did a 26 mile ride I had a very sore @rse.

Rubble, believe it or not your nether regions will eventually toughen up - or at least stop hurting so much.

Anyone got their free Triathletes World today? Would recommend it.  Looks great.  Makes me quite want to get back into triathlon.

Tutu, if it IS choc, you'll just have to make sure you only have high quality stuff.  Agreed it's not the same as lovely old Dairy Milk, but at least you'd get your fix.  I agree with Rubble - a little of what you fancy does you good.

  • Options
    Rubble - you're not slow!

Maybe just make sure you don't have good chocolate for a good few hours before you run?

10 miler yesterday at 7.22 a mile, although did pause the timer a couple of times to catch breath / rehydrate / tie up shoelaces. Still, pleased with that!

Today, a more gently paced 6 miler  in a bit.

Phoned up for my free Triathlete's World a week or so back, nothing yet though...

No T's Wolrd , here, either...* I 've bought a cheap Tri-suit...lol..Think, 'bracing wind/seaside dip c. 1930'.It gets its first outing next week as I Try-a-Tri*

30 mins spluttering in pool this morning...but lovely 6.30 am bike ride to get there...* I 'm going to get my bus pass before I learn the crawl...*

On the other hand, I really like the bike. Legs , fine. B**, fine. And I have full-blown bike envy.I want a racer...even though my old mountain bike is certainly good enough for me. I think I just  might  * might just? *want to wear yellow lycra...

Back to Half-M schedule on Monday.I'm clocking up  miles on the bike but have almost forgotten how to run. Anyone esle doing a Half September/October?

Tutu, I agree with AH. Avoid cheap ( tasty ) rubbish.

  • Options

oh ATM don't be so defeatist, you will 'get' the crawl soon, I'm sure! I'm still too scared to even try, how pathetic..

I could cope with only eating high-quality choc, luckily I love 70%+ dark choc.. bad food of today was carrot cake but absolutely no chocolate at least so there's a start!

ATM - doing Leeds half in Sept then Great North and Cardiff halves in Oct. Busy time as I've got my own club's new trail race which I'm helping organise in Sept also, another local 10k and then 'Hell Up North' 2nd Nov, can't wait!

10 mile-ish trail run in the Dales tomorrow with a RW friend and some of her fast-sounding friends, bit scared! Better get some sleep, it's an early start - night all!

Jings, Tutu. That's some diary...You need your chocolate! I hope you're right about the crawl..

When do you go to Nice , DV? Have you enjoyed the training? Enjoying the taper? * I still can't quite get my head round the idea of running a marathon after that swim and bike ride...It's amazing.*

Still waiting for my free copy of the mag'.

Hi all..   I'm off to Nice on Friday...  just going for the weekend..  IM is on Sunday, fly back on Monday.  I did my final bike and swim today.  13 miles on the bike and a 3000 metre OW swim in the lake.  That's it now..  nothing more until the big day.

Training was going well until a month or so ago...  just got too busy, so apart from some big sessions such as a few 100 mile bikes and some 13-20 mile runs its not been a very productive month.  However, I think it has been good quality training - if not great in quantity.

Yes.. the propsect of getting off the bike and then going out to run a marathon is rather bonkers...!!

Will do my best and will let you know how I do...

Hi everybody, great to see the thread still going strong.

It seems a few of us are thinking of doing triathlons.I bought a bike this week and am slowly getting back into cycling.I used to do plenty of it a few years ago but it feels hard work at the moment.I did 36 miles yesterday and although my leg ache a bit there not too bad.If petrol prices keep going up it may be my only form of transport.I'm off to Egypt in a couple of weeks and hope to learn to do the crawl.Either that or eat and drink too much.

I've only been doing short runs lately. The fell running has been great until 2 weeks ago when i took a tumble and took the skin off my knee. It's been really painful and for a few days i couldn't bend my leg which makes running a tad difficult.I really struggled in a 6 mile race and was disapointed in my time. For a few weeks i've been running well but i didn't fancy it from the start and didn't enjoy it.I think i need to get focused again.I think i'm suffering post marathon apathy.

    ATMATM ✭✭✭

Nah, H. It' s pre-marathon apathy. Try a Tri...image * I like your plan to go to Egypt to learn the crawl. I'm going to Kilmarnock, myself. Doesn't sound the same...*

DV, I'll think of you as I attempt my miniscule splash/bike/dash...Definitely bonkers but  you'll have a great story to tell when you come back.

    J3ff, have you recovered?

But there is a bit of pain image and suffering image involved ATM.  I should have started cycling when I was 3 stone heavier.  More, erm ................... padding.

Nice bike, Rubble!  I suppose it  would be far too wussy to change the saddle?  I can imagine all the other triathletes wondering round the racking area before a tri all stopping to have a laugh at your nice comfy gel saddle... (like I've got!).

    GOOD LUCK DV!!!!! GOOOOOOD LUUUUCCCCCKKKK.

My Triathlete mag took at least two weeks to arrive after I ordered it...  I'm def going to do at least a sprint later in the summer.  Doing too many would cause too much of a prob in the wallet dept.   Shame really - reading the mag's really got me enthused.

Howeyz - completely agree re petrol/cycling. Am doing as much of that as poss.

Did my first race marshalling yesterday.  Was great - knew loads of runners - but my goodness my arm started to ache pointing the way! A new local race - WISH I could have run.  I know the route - it's wonderful.  Def undulating...  My OH did it (no trainng, two, possibly three runs a week) in 43.32 image.  Not fair - I train so hard and am still slow yet he just merrily trots along.  He did Dublin last year n 3.37, no probs.  Our son came second in the 4k - only beaten by a boy two years older than him.  Bodes well for next year.  Am a proud mum.

ATM - yes, recovered I think. managed 14 miles yesterday, nice and slow image

Yeah, J3ff's alive and well! And your b** will toughen up, BR.

I've got a comfy saddle, too, AH. Got to protect my brains...  Great experience, isn't it, to be on the other side of the barriers so to speak.? I think volunteering is a cracking way to spend a day but, you're right, it makes you want to ruuuuun... Well done to your chick in the 4K. And your OH. When you've got it, flaunt it! Flaunt it! image

My Tri- mag came this morning.Lots of info to absorb.  *Also, lots of water to swallow as I head for my second crawl lesson...* Do one in October, AH, so I can worry outloud.

I'm going to put a pic of my bike on now.How many gears has it got BR?Mines got 27 but non suitable for going up hill.I managed to get home 8 mins quicker than last weeks attempt and my back sides stopped hurting.

I'm going to give it a couple of more rides then go straight into a run,if i can.

This is the event i fancy doing if i can get up to speed in the swimming.

20 speed Howeyz.  Yes, it is hard work going up hills (we've got lots of them here) but I'm sure I'll get used to that.  It helps that the bike is very light (<8.5kg).  What I find amazing is doing a marathon distance on the bike in 1 1/2 hours without too much effort! I also think that cars give cyclists a bit more room than runners.

Going to be a while before I'm brave enough to venture onto the tri scene.

Nice one ATM - I think you're talking about swimming image.

AH - sounds like fun doing the marshalling.  I would find it interesting seeing the pain from the other side.  I did do it a long time ago on a fell race as my godfather was in charge of a mouintain rescue team who were dragged into marshalling the course.  Looks like you've got a future champion in junior hen.

  • Options

Jeff - can't believe you've already done 14M after LAMM!  No recovery, then???  Mind you, you've got Midsummer Monroe any minute now, haven't you?  You're made of tough stuff!

Sounds excellent pulling, ATM!  Sounds like you're breathing on both sides, too.  A very good habit to get into - especially for tris when you need to see what's going on around you.

This is great. Every thread I use on the forum has turned into a tri forum! image Anyone catch the world tri champs in Vancouver? Apparently the water was so cold (< 12 degrees, brrr!) that one of the tris became a duathlon. That would've done me a treat!

B R - quality bike porn! What gear have you got on the Lemond? Shimano/Campag? How about some vintage porn - my 21-year-old steed. Technically it's only a 6-speed at the moment because the front mec has packed up. Next time I'm feeling rich (not sure when that might happen) I'm considering getting a new model but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of this beauty. Hope this works.

H, which race are you thinking of doing? * The one I'm looking at was last weekend but looked lovely *

AH, apart from the the sheer terror of not being able to put your feet on the bottom or splutter to the side, what are the main differences when you swiming open water? How big a problem is the cold?

    * Another good session in the pool. Breathing every third pull seems more natural...swimming, Rubble, swimming...and I'm making progress. Wish I'd learned sooner. *

C'mon, Phil. Work up your swimming to your run/bike levels and we'll have someone else to watch in an Ironman.
