I guess it's about different challenges. I get the impression you are a fast runner and are actually competing in races to win, also you tackle some pretty tough terrain and enjoy the challenge that presents. Personally I will never be in a position to do either so the distance is the challenge for me. Every time I go out and manage to drag my ageing carcass an extra mile it's like I've won something and I get a genuine feeling of euphoria at the end, sad but true!
NBFS - Sorry, I really hope my post didn't sound at all negative.
I think it's great that most runners race longer and longer distances but I'm not into road running (convinced my knees would not take it, even though I've never had a problem with them) and I like trying to better my short distances - there's also a bit of a vanity thing attached (!) - I spent years building up a bit of muscle (well put on 3 stone in 18 months, now trimmed off a bit) and am loathe to go back to being a skinny whippet!
Well done all who manage these mega runs - While I might be able to set quite good 10k times, I know I'd really struggle doing proper distance running.
Oh and I'm chuffed to bits - just been to hospital for a scan and my wife is pregnant (we lost a baby recently very late on)!!
congratulations on your wife being pregnant, hope everything goes well for you both.
I didn't think your post was negative, when I thought about it I thought that maybe I was making a bit of an assumption that everyone's goal is to run further and further. I'd love to be able to post the sort of times that would have me up at the front but too many years of drinking and eating have really meant that's not going to happen so I'm now happy to concentrate on the distance - I am very competative in my own way so I need a challenge - I have a lot of admiration for people that can be up there winning races and when I was younger that was me.
Guess your news puts it all in to perspective though - some things are slightly more important than running.
Mick n phil, that's incredible, assumed you'd be resting for a couple of weeks. Good luck with the half at the weekend then, look forward to hearing how it goes.
Denise, you recovered from the snow boarding yet? You managed to get out running this week? - I managed 4 miles last night, pretty late on so it was freezing cold and a bit icy but enjoyed it nonetheless.
Matt, is Lanzarote good for surfing? It's something I haven't done since I was a teenager but I'd love to give it a go again.
Mick n Phil - I'm sure you do know when you are fit to race - just again amazed at your commitment to keep it going rather than have a rest. Good luck at the weekend.
Petedaddy - good time for the 5K, I'm somewhere around the 28/29 minute mark for the 5K myself, do you reckon you could keep it up for the 10K?
Hi Matt, congratulations firstly and hope all is well. I did see the photo of you surfing some time back. Looks fab.
NBFS I have taken a few days off work due to my neck. In a bad way! I always end up with something! But it has meant no running so far this week. Maybe at the weekend.
Managed 59.20 for 10K on the treadmill last night - I know it's not the same but I think what it does do is get you used to running at the right pace to get under the hour. Need to slow up a bit now though - need to do 8 miles on Sunday.
Denise - is your neck bad from snowboarding? Funny - I did a few weights on Monday, trying to do something a little more active than watching TV in between runs. I did my neck in - managed to run Tuesday but had to rest on Wednesday because it was getting worse. Funny how a little bit of excercise that you're not used to can effect you - hopefully you will get out at the weekend.
Weather looks great for running at the weekend - good luck to everyone that's getting out there to pound the streets.
Matt - enjoy the surfing and the slightly warmer weather.
Petedaddy - I'm exactly the same. I used to think treadmill running was easier until I realised that I could speed up and slow down as I needed to while running on the road - treadmill running kills me now - last night was such a slog and I could easily have stopped several times but managed to keep it going. It's a great way of doing the speedwork as part of my training and it then makes you appreciate just how lovely it is running outside in the lovely cold, wet british weather going at a pace that can vary as my old body starts telling me it's had enough.
Sorry I haven't been around for a while. New job, and a very lazy time has meant running has not been on my list for a few months now.
Spring is coming so I am gearing myself up for a new start. Well done all of you who have battled through the winter months and are now achieveing great times.
Congratulations Matt - I hope everything is OK and I wish you and Mrs Matt all the very best - look after her!
So - next goal is the Barnstaple RFL in June - target is below 30 mins (did it in 35 last year). Training here I come!
Well, there's a coincidence. Hi DP, I've haven't been here for a while either, so now the Devon contingent is back in force!
I'm back running again after my ITBS problems of last year. Taking it slowly, making sure that I don't build up the distance too quickly, as that is where I think I went wrong last time. Don't want a re-occurance as it has taken months for it to disappear.
Currently running 3.5 miles twice a week at a slow pace (35 mins), and swimming twice a week to help the leg muscles.
Shame that the RFL is women only, otherwise that we be a good target. Maybe I could just shave my legs...
Mrs A has her 10k at the end of the month, doing the 3 lime sport relief run on sunday.......along the main runway at RAF Kinloss
She has been doing well but now has picked up an ankle injury, i blame myself as I only recently took her to get new shoes. The lady in the shop watched her run 3 strides and said "STOP". She could tell straight away she needed control shoes so the damage may have been done. Got to try and get her recovered for the 10k now as she will be gutted if she misses it
Colin - good to hear you are back on your feet again - team Devon are up and running! Well done you!
Adbru - how did it go? I do hope she is OK! I got some snazzy new shoes a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Plymouth - how good is it to go into a specialised shop with people who know what they are talking about! it's just a shame they have struggled to do 10k in total since new!
We got round without her ankle giving up We were nearly last but time wasnt the point, although one guy almost completed his 10k before we finished our 3 mile !!
Adbru - well done! Time doesn't matter when you are trying to get fit again - or you are as slow as me - just to finish is great!
Last year at the Lanhydrock 10k we passed others finishing when I was plodding my way through 6k - it turned out to be Matt!
I also came second to last at the South Molton 10k - but they were all mega serious club runners - so I was just chuffed to finish. I enjoyed the experience though - I hope you did too!
Mrs A is now on her taper before the 10k next weekend ! Her ankle is still a "bit nippy" but she wont pull out after all this training
I went out for a 14 mile lsr this morning in about 3" of snow, bailed out after 7 miles due to going over my ankle about 5 times !! I train on trails and i couldnt see the stones/bogs/tree roots underneath. So i stopped before i did any damage, will go out again tomorrow but if the weathers still the same i will go to the gym a hog a treadie for 2 hours ! lol.
Hows everyone else getting on ?? All training hard ready for the new season ??
No need to be sorry Matt - I admire your energy - I was shattered at 6k! All those hills - still, might be back again this year! )
Adbru - I'm not a fan of running on treadmills, it seems to take ages! The one at work has a mirror in front too - what a sight! Having said that, I have been such a wimp this winter I have been looking around to buy one. Hubby is not keen - tells me they are "pathetic" - mmm - but probably not as pathetic as me!
Holiday from work this week, so I will get some training in...
Wish I could run on a treadmill, went out this morning for 3.5 miles and got absolutely drenched. Had to pour the water out of my shoes. It was wet, windy, blustery and generally horrible, but I finished with a smile as I ran nearly 2 mins faster than normal.
I think it was a combination of wanting to finish ASAP and the fact that I couldn't here my HRM alarm going off!

i hope all goes well for you , give your wife our best regards please
Mick n phil,
how's the leg? How long are you guys likely to be out of action?
NBFS
NBFS
hi, thankyou for asking - I'm not out of action, i just have a very sore calf, and muscle twinges
i have a very busy diary of races, HM this weekend, 20 the next etc
there's no stopping, oh no !!
it'll take a sight more than a sore calf muscle to stop me
Mick n phil, that's incredible, assumed you'd be resting for a couple of weeks. Good luck with the half at the weekend then, look forward to hearing how it goes.

Lovely evening for it though.
NBFS

Oh matt
good on you

NBFS - very good indeed. Labelled the "Hawaii of Europe" by some.
Gets loads of swell and because it's an island, the wind is always offshore (makes the best waves) somewhere.
Legs aching from the run yesterday!
Pete - Reckon you'll smash 60 mins without any problems.
