Morning all, filthy day again so looks like i'll be wii-ing in the lounge today.

    Waves to everyone!

Oh and Sami, sounds like a right result! Wiggle is a good site i've bought loads there, also sweatshop Happy shopping!

Morning all. Miserable day here as well; working from home today so was hoping to go for an early morning run, but the duvet seemed like a better option at the time. Still I managed a 6 and 5 mile run on Tuesday and Wednesday evening respectively. Hoping to get a longer run in on the weekend!

Sami  as suggested, wiggle, sportsdirect, jjb outlet etc. You really won't need much, in the darkest coldest days tights, wind / waterproof top, hat and gloves above your normal gym stuff will be fine.

Sami - you will be surprise how warm you can get running outside. A nice pair of running tights, waterproof jacket and a long sleeve base layer. Christmas is on the way.

Thank you for the advice!! image I will start shopping as soon as I get some pennies! Exciting... hehe image

I had a play on MapMyRun too, it's a fantastic website!! So useful! I'd been guessing routes in my head for ages up until now! Now if only this really crap weather would go away so I could get outside...! Can't even get to the gym in this horrific weather.

    Afternoon all

We too have the wind and the rain so i my well venture over the gym for a swim later if not it will be into the garage

Daughters coming home for the weekend to help start to put up our Christmas decorations i know sad but because of work and with the amount that we put up each year it takes us at least 4 weekends to get them up we did try to do it all in one day one year but it just killed us so we decided to spread it out

Buy your running kit on line, Lanson Running, Wiggle, StartFitness, Sweatshop etc etc my experience of the "sports" sheds is not great and that you'll get better kit elsewhere.

Map my run is good, if you've got an iphone (I don't) then it'll map it as you're going around your circuit/run.

Dips: You got me thinking last week and feel your advice could be worth listening too nowimage. For starters I am now planning on running my speed session more interval based. Toying with the idea of say 1 1/2 mile warm up, then 2 miles at 7:03 pace, then 1/4 mile recovery jog, before another 2 miles at say 6:40 pace, before another 1/4 mile recovery, then another 2 miles at 6:20 pace, before another 1/4 mile recovery, then 1 mile at 6:40 pace, before a 3/4 mile warm down, also 1/2 hour gentle swim to help warm down. Do you think this sounds better to what I was doing? If not how do you think I should approach things for a speed session where I am used to running 10 miles?.

You also suggest my 19 mile long run is over the top. I run these sort of distances as I enjoy running so much, but am beginning to realise it may be counterproductive. I have say maybe 2 trail marathons and probably a couple of 20 mile events as well as a few half's, 10 mile and 10k events to run over winter, my next PB stab at the marathon will not be until Brighton. My PB is 3:23 run back in September at New Forest. This I am looking to beat, so bearing in mind I thought I needed to continue with the long run each week to keep my endurance up, first for winter races, then into spring for Brighton's PB attempt, what sort of mileage do you suggest for my weekly long run?. Just to say I only do the long each week if I feel 100% fit, and am not tapering for a race, or simply having an easy week.

Went to the Podiatrist today about my in-growing toenail, and it would appear that a change in nail cutting technique has sorted the issue and I do not need surgery. The only thing they did was give me a file to aid trimming the the nail corners. So well happy. Will not miss any time running now.

Continuing on the comeback trail, I ran 5 miles today with 4 x 400m intervals/3min recoveries  in the middle. Pretty happy with that, as it's the first good run I've had for 4 months!

    Onwards and upwards.

SR,  I am very impressed with your change of heart and pleased that you do not appear to be a sulky teenager any more image .  The following is only my thinking and may well be challenged by others, at the end of the day you have to do what suits you and what fits in with your life.

So,  depending on how serious you are about acheiving a PB at Brighton: if you are serious, then I would make it your only focus of the new year.  I can't comment on your milage as I am slower than you and can't cover so many miles in a given time.

Firstly I would look for a decent schedule, there are tons around. Hal Higdon is a good start or there are plenty here on RW. Look for schedules associated with Nick Anderson or Liz Yelling as they advocate Smart training, shorter more intense sessions like hill reps or intervals will help, honest!  Those 10 miling gym bunnies you like to beat are probably not training for a marathon and just running to achieve on the day so be careful you don’t get dragged into their training lives. Be confident in your own training and don’t be afraid to be different!  I think you need to think about easing off for perhaps the next few weeks ready to start training proper, it also gives those niggles a chance to heal.  So if you find a 16 week schedule use the weeks leading up to the start of it to rest/recover from the past year.  Then follow the schedule the best you can, most rarely follow them to the letter so don’t let it take the enjoyment of running away from you.  I appreciate that you enjoy your long run but you need to be careful that you don’t just run them for the sake of it.  Perhaps work in a low milage long run every 4 weeks?  Anyway that’s my thoughts, shout if I can be of any further use. image

Dips - the above sounds good to me image

Dips: thanks for taking the time to reply. Now I am not knocking any of the training plans that are out there, it is just a case of I have never used any before. I sort of try and work my own out on the simple basis, of a long run, speed run & a couple of gentle runs with maybe some hill work thrown in each week. This is of varying intensity levels depending on what races I have coming up. You must understand what it is like trying to stick to a training schedule when you have numerous races to run judging by the fact on your status bar it indicates you have 47 event entries, ( and I have to say that must be some serious racing you do ). You are right in suggesting I should have a break before starting a proper training schedule for a PB attempt at Brighton. But it is not going to happen. I enjoy racing to much and have 9 maybe 10 races to run before Brighton and all of them, except for the one I run with my mum I will having a good go at. I will take my chances doing things my way and see if I get a PB at Brighton and if I get injured along the way which I will admit is a real possibility, I will take it on the chin and put it down to experience.

As for the 10 milling gym bunnies I am trying to beat down the gym, if you class running sub 60 10 mile, or sub 3 marathon that way, then your description is correct. But following them is not right and I need to do my own thing based on what my current levels are at.

Windy run today. I blame the beans.

Waves to everyone, SR I am not even going to try and join in the training talk, although it sounds as though every race you run is like an interval/tempo run image

I plan to download the slowest speed Garmin ready plan off this site. Even though it's sub 5 hours and i'm still about 25 mins over that. I shall just do my best.

Julia, in my mind we all do our best no matter what level we are, and actually I'm exhausted just trying to keep up with SR's training chat!  Reminds me of conversations I have with my son...you just know you are never going to win! imageimageimage

SR, I love the thought of me being a serious racer image imagenot sure I do that many but its a great way to socialise and keep reasonably fit.  But don't forget those 47 events are over a number of years not months!  Whatever you do..enjoy and maybe see you at Brighton, I might even hitch a ride!

  • Options

JT: yes, you could say that every race I run is interval/tempo, but it is just race pace for what ever that distance event is. If you mean my regular running pace, then I can assure you there is a difference in pace between speed work sessions and general runs of about 20 - 25%. I just find when my top end speeds improve, and it is not hard to make improvements with the level I am at, that it has a knock on effect of improving my general running speed.

I am sure you will notice this with your training for Brighton. After the lessons learnt from this year, I can see you doing better then you imagine.image

It was windy out there today. I see on the news earlier someone jumped over the Brighton Pier with there kite surfer yesterday. They showed the video and he looked really high.

Dips: Oh, I thought the event entry counter took one off after the date of the event passed. Did not realise they kept them on there, or do you mean years in the future? That's some serious planning if you do.

I think I have to say that training talk is getting to me now. I feel like I am having to justify what methods I useimage. I will try the mile interval speed session though and see how it goes.

Yes, maybe see you at an event some time soon.

SR, you don't have to justify anything..as I said, enjoy what you do and don't take my waffle too seriously..now lets put this one to bed. night night!

    Morning all

Been a long hard week at work this week had a rest day on Thursday and meant to get out for a run on Friday but i never got home from work until 5am by the time i got to bed it was 6 o’clock i did wake up at 10 but thought no it’s too early so when back to sleep with every intention of getting up at 12

Well the next thing i knew it was 1.30 so by the time i got up and had come around it was far too late so i just did 3 miles on the treadmill in the garage instead

Today did an easy 4km out with 3km fast coming back and a 1km easy jog cooldown.

    Afternoon everyone image

I finally managed to get to the gym!! Can someone tell me if this sounds ok?

5 minute warm up walk - 4ish mph

15 minute run at 6mph (my target pace for the marathon, I think)  - 2 miles covered

20 minutes on recumbant bike - 3.8 miles

    10 minutes at 6mph - 1 mile

Then my ankles started to hurt so I had to stop. I am really angry with myself for bailing but the sensible side of me told me not to push my luck. The last thing I need is an injury right at the start. It just doesn't feel like enough to me..

Are you new to running? Have a look at the Runners World London Marathon training schedules from beginners to advanced runners.

London is only 1 week after Brighton so you could always adapt it slightly. Gym work is o.k. but, to be honest there is no substitute to miles on your feet outdoors. Save the gym for bad weather days!

I started running in June this year, treadmill only thus far, so yes I am a newbie!! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I've got a personal trainer to help me too. Once my outdoor running stuff arrives I will definitely get out there. image

Has your personal trainer run a Marathon?

Suggest you set yourself some target races e.g. 10k January, half Marathon February and 20 miles March. You shouldn't have any difficulty in finding races of these distances especially the longer 'pre London' events.

    Where do you live?

She's a former olympian and has done 4 ironmans, so she's verrrrrrry experienced!

Funnily enough I was just looking at the Brighton half marathon but I've heard bad things about it, organisation-wise... I live in Worthing.

Sami, you might want to join the BM Sunday training runs,  starting this Sunday with a 6 miler. If you look on  the Brighton Marathon website there is a link for Training Runs.

There is a 4 mile race on Worthing Prom at the beginning of January (well there usually is!) might be a good starting point for you? Another good local resource is www.sussexraces.co.uk

I can't really make it to those, which sucks hugely. It's more a logistic thing than anything, as I don't drive. My gym has a marathon training club which I'm trying to get into at the moment, so all is not lost. You know, I've never heard of a race along worthing prom!! How bizarre. Considering it's on my doorstep!!! Thank you for the link image

The Eastbourne half is a nice one as is Hastings which is a tough one.

Worthing normally have a 20 mile race.

image no Worthing 20 this year,  I think Easter has put a spanner in the works.

Sami, If I'm right and you are a girlie (rather than a male person!) there is Worthing Running Sisters in your area, a women's running club. They, incidently hold a 5k and 10k Christmas Cracker run also on Worthing seafront, 4th  December this year. http://www.worthingrunningsisters.org.uk/1.html

I am indeed a girlie image and I cannot thank you enough for that link!! The amount of information I've gotten since I came here is just incredible. I'd never have found it by myself!! Thank youuuuuuu!!

Having a rest day today, my ankle is a bit sore.

They really are a very supportive club with very mixed abilities Sami so do give them a try, its great to have company when running especially through the winter when the evenings are dark and cold.

Having just gotten back from 'ambassadoring'  the BM training group I'm on a motivational high! image
