    Hi all,

Colin, I think an ease back to work would be a great idea.  I did have part of this set of shifts included in my leave so I'm only actually in for 3 days before my next rest days.  Now it's 2 down only 1 to go and they've flown by so it's not all bad.

I really enjoyed the Notts 10 and the Watersports Centre was a great venue.  It was very warm at the start but had cooled down nicely by the end and was just nice to sit on the steps for a while afterwards.  I thought I'd probably get round in under 90 minutes and was just going to take it quite steady, but when I got to half way I realised if I hurried it along a bit I'd get round in under 85 so I stepped it up and made it in 1:24:25 according to my watch.  Not sure what the official time was yet but it isn't that important and I had a good evening all round.

I'm going to my first track session with the Tri Club tomorrow night so not sure how that will go.  i haven't been on a track since I was at school - and I didn't like it very much then!  Hopefully it'll be more enjoyable now.

Jules - I'm a definite no for ice baths, even the thought of them makes me squirm.  I generally have a just warm shower after a race or long run.  Otherwise, I like them piping hot.

Phil, I reckon you were right to send him off, if you let them get away with trying to start fights when they are young they'll just carry on, and the consequences will possibly be worse when they're older and bigger.  How did you get on at Malvern?

Hope everyone else has had a good weekend.

PM4 - I use to be a football referee before I took up road running and have since binned the refereeing. I never went anywhere near kids football, not because of the kids, the parents are much worse and their offspring must cringe with embarrassment sometimes. If you'd have said the lad's dad came up and gave you a mouthful, it wouldn't have surprised me.

It is a shame that the grass roots of the game has got into the state it's in. The number of times I was told how bad a ref I was, which was a bit of a cheek as most of the players couldn't hit a barn door from 6 yards and I'd turn round a say they should be thankful I'm bad or I'd be refereeing at a much higher level. I have a good old chuckle when I listen to people berating the ref because he/she didn't give a freekick or whatever. If refereeing was easy, more people would do it, especially retired professional footballers, £30,000 a year plus expenses if you're a select list, but they don't because deep down they know it's a tough and thankless job

    Evening all,

Sam/K.P./Colin - Thanks for the comments re sending off the lad. I got a bit of stick from a few of the parents (it was the semi final, and they were the host team - talk about making friends & influencing people!!) and thought I might be off for a SFR (thats a short, fast runimage) at the final whistle. Interestingly Colin, his father did come to me after the game, and we had a calm chat about it. He still felt it was harsh as "his lad isnt like that". He clearly didnt see what was happening! I did comment on the fact that they see Rooney et al do it and get away with it etc. and he agreed. Sadly, it went to penalties, and a couple of parents were stood behind the goal, berating & intimidating the opposition goalkeeper - very sad. He had the last laugh though, saved the last penalty to go through!! I dont normally referee, in favour of running, but I get roped into it a couple of times a year as a favour for a mate who runs one of the teams. Cant say I miss it......

K.P. - Malvern was good, I wasnt! Got round in 2.13 as my running partner found the heat & humidity a bit much, but after Edinburgh, it was water off a ducks back really. Was glad of the gentle pace, as the hamstrings were feeling sore BEFORE the run, could have done 2hrs without killing myself, so felt okay. Have been on the legs way too much lately, and have a gym induction session tomorrow night - OMG.

    Time for some R&R.....

Hello - I'm in for this.

Will read back so i don't ask any silly questions..... image

OK, Have read back now image

I was in for the Stratford Mara but failed to make the cut off for the second lap in the heat, so ended up doing the half image

I did Edinburgh, and did manage to complete that in the heat image

Will be doing Wolverhampton the week before and GNR the week after this one, which I am looking forward to very much! (Robin Hood that is, although I do like GNR)

Hope everyone is having a good day image

hey vixx i was in stratford too - my first marathon but stopped at 21 mile. sound like a few of us here are looking at robin hood as a re run!
  • Options

Yes maelca - I think so.  My only pondering is - will it be warm again?????

What happened to you at Stratford?

  • Options

Re-run? Revenge more like, how dare 26.2 miles turn me into a stumbling, mumbling wreck? Valuable lessons have been learnt, a more realistic goal set, better preparation underway and come race day I will conquer this distance! Hopefully.

Personally, I'm expecting it to be a warm one again image, sun blazing down so I'll be drinking plenty on the way round. After all, we run past Notts Forest FC so there's somewhere suitable to relieve myself if necessary image

Yee-ouch Jules!! If I ever see you playing tennis I will run very fast in the opposite direction!! image

I've taken you advice though and used a ball. Also going to take a week off running and cycle/use the eliptical instead. I HATE taking time off but I really was hobbling at the weekend so it's for the best I reckon.

  • Options

Colin - I'm right there with you on the relieving point being a Carlisle United supporter!

@Sam - Hee hee! See if it helps? i'm no expert, just tend to read a lot. Rest sounds best.

Been out in the rain this morning. Made for a nice change actually. Got wet but not drenched. I'm sure you'll ll appreciate the difference.

As for the Ice Baths issue, thanks for the replies made for interesting reading..Want another?

    Here goes...

a friend has recommended SIS recovery drink powder (as available from ASDA, tesco etc ie not Specialist running shops) I'm considering it as its in easy supply and not too expensive.

    Anyone else use it?

    Anyone got other recommendations?

And if you suggest 'For goodness shakes' then tell me where I can get THEM from cos they're like rocking horse poop round here! (That is, hard to find...not...well, you know...taste...image)

    Morning!

Have not posted for a while, as have done virtually no running since Edinburgh.  Went out last night and could really feel the effects of 2 weeks off....must get back into it as really struggled.  I got surprisingly used to not going out though, and I have to say I enjoyed it....eating, drinking, being lazy etc etc.

Re the recovery powder..interesting question.   I got some when I trained for my first marathon, and used it for that and my second marathon...however, I did not use it for my third, and not for Edinburgh either, and I have to say I noticed no difference in recovery.  I don't actually like the taste of it either (any of them) it makes me gag, but I am not sure they did anything for me personally....just my opinion though.

For a cheaper alternative I have heard people mixing skimmed milk with Nesquick for a similar benefit, I suppose it's just the sugar and protein that helps, so it doesn't really have to be Rego stuff.

I learnt another lesson in Edinburgh with gels...you get what you pay for! No more cheapo gels for me...they did sweet FA!

Yes...rain here too...glad to be in work and not out running in fact.  I hate the rain at this time of year, because it is so warm, you would swelter in a jacket...what to wear eh?image!

    xx

hey vixx and colin - i think i was the heat that got me in stratford and i probably hadnt run far enough in training. my longest run was 20 miles. im going to increase it maybe to 23/24 even? I tried to use gels in training and took i one at 15 but i really dont like them. made me feel more dehydrated. im might try jelly beans this time. do you use any fuel on your way round?
  • Options

The only problem with sweets is that they can get sticky (especially if it's warm) and where to stash them?!

I don't particularly like gels, but the SIS ones really do the job for me, would not use anything else now.

  • Options
yeah true - i managed to wash my shorts with them in the pocket too!! i am going to try putting them in tin foil in my pocket?! I has SIS too it felt like there was loads of it!! do you run with a drinks bottle red panda?
  • Options

imageI can just imagine you running along, leaving a trail of jelly babies behind you!  Have you tried the lucozade tablets?  I recommend them, and they are easy to carry, and taste ok.

There is quite a lot in an SIS gel, but I really think they are good, and the ones I take you do not need water with them to work.  The only thing that put me off was the price, like £1.85 each!  Still, it's not like I have 10 a day, and I reckon it's worth it. Actually, it's probably cheaper to buy in bulk online.  Will  check in a bit.

I do run with a bottle on anything over 10 miles, though I hate carrying bottles.  I think I am going to start running with a normal bottle of lucozade and then chucking it at mile 8 or something, save me carrying it..  How about you??

lol! trail of jelly sweets!! i do like the lucozade tablets too - not had any for a while actually. i carry a bottle - usually one of the smaller 330ml lucozade when triaining. I tried stratford marathon in april and had a 500ml bottle of enery drink then took another 500ml from my family at 12. they get heavy though. I wonder if rhood have bottles or cups - im really rubbish with cups nearly choke myself!!

  • Options

Do you find 330 enough for a long run then?  I am always interested in what people consume as it seems to vary loads.

You are right they do get heavy.  I did a 20 mile (horrible) race a while back and took a huge bottle of lucozade, I think it was 750ml or something, and my arm was killing me by the end!  Rather that than one of those funny camel back thingy's though....don't know how people get away with those, would drive me potty.

I think Robin Hood is in bottles..I totally agree about cups, I can not drink from a cup and run, gets everywhere but my mouth!

RP/ Maelca - i always buy my SIS gels of ebay, you can usually pick them up for around £1 each, look after the pennys as they say!

The only place I have managed to find For Goodness Shakes is Sainsburys.  Use them all the time after my LSRs and also after Edinburgh.  Chocolate flavour. image

Darren posted a lush sounding DIY recovery drink on the other thread (Edinburgh)  - Darren - you'll have to post it here as well - involved peanut butter, milk, oats, honey(?) plus other things - sounded yummy.

During runs with RP on the SIS gels.  Although there is quite a bit they are more liquid than others I have tried and hence not so hard to swallow.  Also tried jelly babies in Edinburgh but they made me feel sick.

I think Lucozade have also brought out jelly bean type things.  Never tried them but they be an option.

Keep popping into this thread to see how everyone getting on - got to say not having run since Edinburgh due to injury I am getting slightly twitchy and bizarrley quite jealous that I am only doing the half in Nottingham and not the full! image

    Happy running all. x

RP you cheeky Northern Monkey! Spanner indeed! i much prefer the 'Super Tanner' tag than 'Spanner! thankyou very much! (flashbacks to my playground days there!)....Spanner and Daz automatic are the 2 names that stick in my mind! you'll be proud of me, i sw the buy one get one free deal the other day.....and just kept on walking! are you doing the City of Manc 10k? thats coming up soon isnt it? i always go for the Orange SIS by the way, tried them all, and there by far the best (to me)

Fiona- hope your nearly there now with your injury? ive had a few twinges since Edi, but held up ok in both the 10k's that ive done since then, just really aware now of making sure i stretch/warm down properly now! (hardly used to bother before!)

i'll bigup the 'Spanners/super tanners recovery drink! easy to make and contains good level of fast/slow release energy/protein, also tastes pretty damn good aswell!

no i have to keep running in loops past friends houses to pick one up! i tend to use one 330ml for around 12 miles. it was 500 but trying to stick with 330 to save my arms and be more used to little amounts in the mara image
