Hi folks. i like the sound of the book,  may be bit out of my league, but might get it anyway.  i've often wondered how u follow these schedules for hiily marathons etc. do u do distance as it says but include hills? not much flat round here so no choice really.

ice still interfering with running here. 2 hours cross-training clearing ice from drive to get useless BMW out today.

Emma- don't worry about the title- "Advanced", it explains, only means you have a target time, rather than just want to get around. Personally, I try to include hills for Snod and base my running on effort rather than splits- unlike flt maras where the focus is on time and running even splits (in my case, at least).

Thanks. i think i'll get it.  need something good to read over Christmas.  will be good for Ossie Phoenix which i intend to do next yr (17 or 26 miles not decided yet.)

Not sure whether to commit to Snod or not. difficult to get long runs in over summer hols when either work or kidsit each day.  Poor excuse, i know.

In fact, one of the best things about it is that it doesn't give time limits - to put it in simple terms, it's all based on different types of effort and the effect of that on improving certain aspects of your ability to run faster over the distance; a bit like heart rate monitor training, but more detailed, if you've ever looked into that.

So, and I'm sure JD will correct me if I am wrong, a 4.30 marathoner could follow the same schedule as a sub-3, as long as you can cover the distances required. Which is perfect for me, as I made my best progress when following the Parker HRM training and was most frustrated by the RW 3.45 marathon schedule. The time schedule prescribed times for every single run, and if I didn't meet the time allocated, I felt like such a failure image
  • Options
Frodo- you got it- YOU pick your target pace and work the schedule around that. Similarly mileageimage
  • Options
Do I get a gold star? image

Now I just need to go away and work out in greater detail what the different efforts are! HRM training was sooo much easier, feedback was instant and beeped at me if I got it wrong image

Oh, and another reason to love Advanced Marathoning, they don't have giving up alcohol as a pre-requisite to running well image

Which brings us back to the question of marathon goal-?

seen it now- 3:49.59- .......bear with me

  • Options
    See my TOTP - 3.49.59.
  • Options
Frodo- 3:49.59 is 8.46 marathon pace. Check my maths, but the plan says to start around MP+20% and run the last 5 to 10m at MP+ 10%. This means starting LRs at 10.52 pace and working up to 9.38 pace. Working from your goal MP, the calculator on here says that you should be looking at doing a  half in 1:49.24, which is 8.21 pace- that's your pace for tempo runs- well anywhere between there and your pace for 15k
  • Options
Which I can already do (the 1.49 half that is PB is well under that). Like I said - I'm a lazy heifer image

My 10k and half times just don't translate up to marathon times yet - but I don't feel it is an endurance issue as I can keep plodding away for hours on end, and on consecutive days too - I just don't push myself and I need to shift some weight.

    Hi all

Frodo yep family glad I'm back out there!!! dose my head in not being able to run, then I do there heads in by being a pain in the a##image

TR- well done and welcome back

Wish I had shares in AM now....imageimage

5m recovery plod for me tonight- but I'm back on to the structure of a schedule again!! Day 1 of my 18 week VLM plan now completed!image

Hi All - thanks for the link to Amazon - looking forward to a bit of "light" reading now image

Did the Sneyd Christmas Pud Run yesterday - almost perfect conditions, though a couple of sections where black ice made the running a bit tricky.  2 x 5 mile laps - first lap in 45 mins, second lap in 45 mins 14 secs ..... so, as I was running without my watch, I'm at least consistent with my plodding!!   Also, as I've only ever run one other 10 mile race, this was also a PB for me - so well happy image

Looking at weather forecast and starting to wonder whether the Christmas Cracker race on the Roaches will go ahead next Sunday.   Looks like it could be another trot round Tittesworth Reservoir (the alternative route for bad weather), but time will tell!   Now where did I put that elf costume?

Way to go JD-those 18 weeks will fly by! My Windermere Training plan doesn't start until Jan 16th-am really determined now to stick to AM programme and not Smartcoach.

Feel a bit knacked today..I suspect a lurgy type bug is rampaging around the system looking for an in-road!image

    TR is unleashed again!!

Frodo-I know what you mean about being able to plod all day, I'm the same. May seriously consider joining a local running club to give me some incentive to do quality rather than quantity esp over winter.

  • Options

Brer- Frodo- If you stick to the paln you'll get the quality. I think the tempo runs and LRs are the key....

But quality AND quantity are even betterimage

    Brer unleashed again like thatimage

JD Thanks mate and good luck with training plan, started planing mine for Shakespeare marathon looking at the 55+ AM plan, just not sure if I can commit to such an intense program.

So wanted to get out and run again this morning!!image But I'm going to be sensible and build my speed and mileage up slowly, so nice steady 6miler planned for tomorrow morning. I have hated the two periods this year when I haven't been able to run even though the first one was only two weeks and this one 18 days. Felt like a coiled spring!

  • Options

TR38- well done on the sensible approach- you know it makes senseimage

    9m for me tonight with 4m tempo in the middle- felt harder than usual after Sunday's exuberance, but ok. splits: 8.19, 8.21, 8.03, 6.44, 6.36, 6.37, 6.38, 8.07, 8.29image

  • Options

JD .......Great splits even though they were hard......bloody amazing image

TR38........glad you are back on the road again....take it steady.....i was also like you ....thinking i would not only not be able to commit to the 55 mile programme but i didnt think i would be able to do it and be without injuries .....but i did both.  Much easier in the summer with the ealry mornings and it really did work in every way.

SD ....well done on your run ....cant wait to get a race in ....we have had three local ones all cancelled due to the weather so gonna have a run of races coming up after Xmas ....weather permitting of courseimage

Brer .....hope the bug has gone down the NO entry route......have just got over one myself and lucky for me it didnt get to good a hold.image

Ventured out to train with a different club tonight and have to say if i thought anything i had done in training was really hard before tonight .....i was wrongimage  Wow 200 meter hill reps up and down for 35minutes solid.  i think im gonna be aching in the morning.....i shall know the meaning of recovery run tomorrowimage

  • Options

NQ2  Thanks as always for the encouragement those hill reps sound very tough!!image

Alarm set for 5am 6miler plannedimage

Second session with physio today. More painful than last week.  Recovery process going to take longer than expected - there has been some serious calf muscle shortening while the achilles tendon has been inflamed for so long.  Moral: if you suspect achilles tendonitis go to a sports injury specialist immediately.

Keep up the running, folks.  Loving the stories.

Can't wait to get back out there.  This is the biggest setback in 11 years of running (apart from my two foot operations).

T Rex- good to hear you're making progress- hang on in there, buddy and don't rush it. Good advice tooimage

    12m for me tonight and after Sunday's over- exuberance I managed to run in a more controlled manner tonightimage- 12m in 1:34.25 with first 7m around MP+15-20% and last 5m MP + 10% Splits: 8:17 8:06 8:06 8:03 8:02 8:09 8:11 7:32 7:29 7:30 7:30 7:28

TRex-good news that they have found something to cure though! JD-ever efficient with training plan! My 9 mile plod tonight took 87 mins inc 3 toilet stops and a chat with a postmanimage
  • Options
Brer- lolimage no toilet breaks for me tonight and I think the postmen had all gone homeimage

image I did a fast (for me) five mile tempo run last night (1 warm up , 4 tempo) felt great, planned on doing 7 or 8 tonight, started to get changed and the only thing that changed was my mind....wrapped xmas pressies instead and now feel fat and unfit.  Need to get some races sorted so that I get my motivation back!!!! Too damn dark right now to have any inspiration to go out and run!!!
  • Options
Andrea- the only real motivation that counts and lasts is intrinsic- Dark? Get a light!  Cold? Wrap up warm or run faster!image But I do agree- as I said the other day- having a race as a target to get up and do it helps massively- so pick one!!image
  • Options
In a simialr vein and in need of a kick up the @rse I've entered the Central Lancashire half on 2nd Jan - though intend to treat it more as a tempo training run than race. Then I have the Helsby half on 23rd Jan.

However, I am not out running as the hallowed AM training plan would have me doing tonight. But I do have good reason - I am supping champagne instead image
Mr F has been offered a job image After three and a half years of temporary contracts and being in and out of work, he has got a perm position starting in Jan with proper prospects.
All is well in the hobbit household image

    Thanks image

Have any AM experts got an opinion on the 12 week plan? Just re-evaluating my fitness/work situation and wondering if that my be more viable as a training plan.

  • Options
Frodo .....will be interested in your replies as i find the 18 week ones a little bit long for me ....i always seem to peak and feel really ready to run a few weeks before.  I was considering doing it myself this for Snod next year image  Even more so if i can keep the mileage up over the yearimage
