C'mon (to quote Waffe), it's not THAT hard! Yes, there are climbs on the bike, but the descents more than make up for them!! Just make sure you get the gearing right. The swim is easy - you can see the whole course, provided it isn't misty - and if it is misty, we put the start back. Transition is right on the ede of the lake, so you don't have far to go. I'll concede that the run can be cruel, but you entered a race on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park - what did you expect - fenlands?
As for Waffe's list - yup, perfect. Other than you needed to be doing all that lot months ago - not in the week before!
We do operate a broom wagon if anyone gets into serious difficulty and the refs both on the ground and on the bikes are all firm but fair.
You'll have a great time. Remember - we do this because we enjoy it...
cheers IronM...you might need to sweep me up off the run...lol....seriously though i'm really looking forward to this race...its an incredible part of the UK and i think i'll enjoy the bike ride..just been getting my check list together and got a little butterfly or excitement (first time this year) think you should give out medals though....hahahaha (i'm a medal hound!!!)
I LOVE this race so dont get me wrong but I think its totally overhyped on the toughness factor unless you live and train in somewhere like Norfolk the swim is flat ,no large waves or monster currents, the bike is undulating with a couple of sharp climbs thrown in but mostly long steady stuff with some great descents, the run, the first and last few miles are flat around the perimeter of the lake and again undulating for the rest with a couple of sharp climbs its a great hard race but not a monster
IHMO of course and somebody remind of this post when I am breathing out my @rse 10 miles into the run
So looking forward to this weekend what weather site were you on Dave? weather looks a bit unsettled on the BBC this morning could make camping and racing "interesting"
Agree with you Ridgeback. No real monster climbs, thats why the fast(er) guys use TT bikes, with no problem. Worst section on the bike is that long long drag back from the turnround, always gets me (& why I prefer the original circular route).
On the run its just that double climb from the junction, and the steep drop in between, & you know you got that to do on the way back.
Certainly hope this wind dies down by then, otherwise I'm going to regret saying all this.
Looking forward to this now. Me and my buddy Azattack have been out around the Peak district on the bikes doing plenty of climbing so hoping that will have been good prep for this. Not done much running though and even less swimming so fingers crossed. Will be arriving at the campsite early Saturday afternoon. Hope to see some of you there.
There are a few hills in norfolk not quite as big, I did my big cycle training session there a couple of week ago and must have found all the hills in the county!!
Hill run session done tonight, it may come in handy on Sunday.
Finally sorting stuff out for the weekend and getting a little nervous about missing something out, planing on using the check list you posted RBM on IM 2010 thread which worked really well, erm, if I can find it.
I probably wont arrive until Sat PM now cos It's looking like I'll still have things to sort out in the morning.
woody we'll be in the white lion (not drinking.....which i know isnt really the pirate way) having a meal sat night so text me if your coming over...if not i'll catch ya in transition on sunday morning (anychance you will drag me round the swim??)
Don't forget, Ridgeback Max is clinically insane............
Ha ha I've never met RBM! but insane or not his advice seems to work.
Might take you up on that Andy especially if it's peeing down, the meal that is. Not done a lot of swim training so not sure how the swim will go, with a bit of luck I'll fluke it again if so you can gladly have a tow that's if it's clear enough to draft..
Can anyone shed any light on how clear the water will be ?
Not very clear, just your usual sort of lake water , But it is one of the deepest lakes in the UK, So it's cold, and can get a bit choppy if the wind is blowing down the valley
Last year the water was quite choppy, especially on the crossing leg, when we were parallel to the shore. It was slower on the way out, but quicker on the way in. So if there is a lot of wind this year, lets hope it is blowing in the same direction!
Argggg, I probably didn't need to know that Dave. Mind you, i'll be towards the back, so lots of others in front of me will have had time to ingest your sick Dave
The charity swim is going to be kicking off at 14.00 on the Saturday. The 750m lot go at 14.00 and the 1500m set off at 14.30. I'm not sure how this is going to affect us having a sociable little dip. I was planning to register on arrival and then have a little swim, bike and run.
Does anyone know if it's possible to swim from the lakeshore at the campsite?
