Its all about running slowly! image You just have to get really good at running slowly image Consistency is key!

Most of you guys would thrash me over a 5k, 10k, half and most likely full marathon, its what happens when you get over 50k then it becomes really interesting! image Every single one of you has more than you know inside, always keep pushing. image

Thought I saw someone I knew in the gloom whilst running last night. They were greeted by mad, red-faced, sweaty, fluorescent coated woman. I'd also fallen earlier so was very muddy. Ran towards them waving & smiling only to realise as got closer that was a complete stranger!

Well.........I have just got back from another run! Was not planning this but a few lads went out tonight and as it was going to be a very slow affair I joined them and completed a very pedestrian 3.03 miles.

I may be very late in joining this thread but here goes: I'm contemplating returning to running after a 2.5 year lay off due to a serious illness. During this period I've been treated with high dose steroids and specialist immunosuppressant drugs. I'm now on low maintenance doses of both and I've been in remission for 8 months. My consultant tells me that a very very careful return to running at a very slow pace will probably be ok and that I absolutely mustn't overdo it. Prior to my lay off I enjoyed running 10ks, half marathons and full marathons. I don't have any ambitions in that department at the minute- would just like to get my running legs back! I've kept up exercise with Pilates, yoga and walking my dog - a couple of miles every day- and I managed to ski for 5 days over Xmas so I was delighted ( if a bit worn out) over that. I'd really appreciate any advice and encouragement on starting my running from scratch again- I'm a bit apprehensive ......

    Have already added my miles

Hi Fran-tic sorry I missed saying hello

Hi Nurse Betty and welcome, I am pretty new to running so I could only suggest maybe doing a couch to 5k plan the Nhs one is good and there are downloadable podcasts with instructions and music it starts very gently and aims to get you to 5k in 9 weeks but you could take longer if your health allows it

Hey Fran-tic! *waves like a nutter!* image

Hey Nurse Betty welcome to the group! You have come to the right place for advice and plenty of encouragement! This is maybe the nicest thread on here image

We are all at different levels but have all in one way or another started again from the beginning. If you havnt already, have a read back over the thread as there is soooo much information and many inspiring stories on here. image

With that said please feel free to ask as many questions as you want! image

Just take it easy, it is very very easy to get carried away. We have all done it, we have all ended up with an injury!

My first suggestion would be to increase the length of one of your walks and make your shorter walks a little more brisk. Get that heart pumping a little without putting major strain on your system. How well does the dog handle? Could become your new running buddy? image

Most of all, and this is the most important advice I have to part with, don't forget to SMILE! image

Hi Nurse Betty, welcome to the thread. I think B2B and Ms have pretty much covered it and as a previously very experienced runner you'll already know how important it is to just listen to your body. Take it easy and always look at the bigger picture. We are all here for the long haul and will support you every step of the way.

Rest day for me today, a movie with kids later and a stretch before I set the alarm for 5am Wednesday.

What is this 5am you speak of? clocks go back that far?!!?image image

Welcome Nurse Betty - as the others have said! I suppose the key here is very much listen to your body. If you have to take it carefully then make sure you do. Walk breaks if you need to and be aware of what/how much you are doing.

Well second morning of the schedule to get me faster - 1.5 miles warm up, 8 times 400 metres with a minute recovery and then a 1.5 mile warm down - total time took an hour so for mileage recording purposes we'll say that is 6 miles in total.

I have delberately not logged any miles as I got a bit carried away last month (to my legs detriment and still finished 4th (thanks plodding hippo))

the mantra for this year is quality over quantity.

I shall be watching your speed work carefully Grendel and taking some notes for myself image oh by the way ive been listening to some Within Temptation lately, not bad! Also checking out Epica as well. image

  • Options

Nice to hear that B2B - not into Epica but Leaves Eyes, FairyLand and Ayereon (into the Electirc Castle album)  are all worth a listen.  WIthin Temptation - the Black Symphony albu is brilliant (on Spotify)

  • Options

cool I shall have a look. Evanescence is great if you dont have an album already, im usually into much heavier stuff but the WT was nice. The other way to hear stuff is youtube, just type "full album" after what you are looking for. Then of course head to your nearest music store and buy the album image

45 minute spin sesh today at lunch, thrashed the legs some more ready for a run with Mummysaurus tonight.

Booked a deep tissue kicking for saturday morning as well image

Welcome Fran-tic and Nurse Betty to our little bubble. As everyone has said, listen to your body. Don't let the excitement push you to hard to breaking. image Physios are expensive as my bank balance can testify.

330OB - Mrs DS was actually one who persueded me to hit the road , she was always the fitty and I was the couch potatoe. Now she is getting competitive but due to injury she is slowly making a come back. Its another motivation to get out and run tbh and is good running together .

Will have a look at run hub when I get home from work. What exactly is it?

Got out last night 3.92 miles in 39 mins.  Have been out 3 days in last 4 so well deserved rest night for me. 2 miler on Wednesday then long run friday !

Just realised B2B I do have Evanescence!!! - Well done on the gym stuff lunchtime and enjoy

Its good to have someone else to run with DS (not that I do) it helps you to get out the door and gives that little bit of motivation.

  • Options

DS have a look at RunHub place to logs runs with comps, leagues etc good wee motivator

Afraid I am same as Grendel a lone runner. But no run for me tonight got caught up at work. But I have a target for the year and therefore every month and want to at least start Jan with an on target month.

Last week was my biggest week mileage wise since July last year, have to be careful and curb my enthusiasm and not "blow up" I am a stats man and like to see the numbers go up !!

B2B deep tissue massage - ouch !!! Had a sports massage about a week before London once, jesus, it was a tad sore - but great a couple of days later !!

Wow - things move fast on here nowadays!

I have been snowed under this last week, with essay deadlines, so haven't been running but managed to get out today.

2.3 miles in 26 minutes. Hopefully I can get a routine going now.

Will try and catch up with the thread if I get a chance.

Keep up the good work allimage

+1 Evanescence. I'm into all sorts these days. Was a rocker and raver as a youngster, always liked a wide variety of music. Iron Maiden, G n R, Anthrax and the amazing Metallica and Nirvana. Emimen, Ice T and more recently Tiny Tempah, whose Discovery album is amazing from start to finish (parental guidance a must). Calvin Harris, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers and the Black Keys are the tunes of choice at the moment (must be getting old with the folky stuff). Anyone with the ability to play live.

Woke up this morning feeling pretty rough, probably due to the wife leaving the bloody central heating on all night (hate it) so will run tonight.

Well done on getting out people. Beachball, the thread charges ahead like nobody's business these days, hard to keep up with it at times but always here when you need it.

Also, I use the Xbox for music now. Thousands of free albums to play and add to your own online playlist. There's also a feature where you enter the name of a band or song you like and it takes you to a radio station playing either what you asked for or music from that genre. Brilliant for finding old stuff and new alike.

Can't believe I left out the Arctic Monkeys....quite brilliant at tines.
  • Options

Beachball - Yep this train is full steam ahead! image

JR - I listen to a lot of the same! image Plus loads of other stuff, top bands for me are Tool, Alice in Chains, Perfect Circle also drum and bass and dubstep. Black Sun Empire are wicked for running! Is it Last.FM by any chance? That is brilliant for finding new bands to listen to. Mumford and sons are great, if you like your folk try Fleet Foxes as well image Or if you want to head into old brilliant folk check out the guitar genius that is Martin Carthy

Went for a really fun run with Mummysaurus last night. I shall let her take the spot light and just add my miles image

Will look out for Fleet Foxes - Leaves Eyes is the band of choice at the moment but I have got Within Temptation's new album on pre order -  There are so many good European symphonic metal bands out there (the ones with female lead singers are, for me, the best).  I know I am to old for all that sort of stuff but what the hell I like it, I listen to it in the car and no one else has to worry about it!!!

6 miles this morning moving along quite nicely - the schedule said 5-7 so I took the middle ground and did 6!!!

Came home to find little Grendel has developed a stomach bug! Happy days -

Our fun run last night was my first proper run in my new sandals, I am now officially a Luna Monkeyimage and yes I had  toe socks on cos it was flippin cold out there, we ran, we splashed in puddles and slid around in mud through the wood and best of all........it was FUN we ran a total of 3.5 miles no aches no pains and today my legs and feet feel great no after effects at all...........I am one very happy Monkey,
Thank you B2B for a great run, Now all I have to do is get use to people pointing and staring at me..........

Good running MS , 5k's becoming the norm for you now, maybe you will be doing that ultra  image Keep working on her B2B.

Am now the owner of some Newtons MV2 , proper racing flats .  Love my Newtons Sir Isaacs , seen the MV2's on ebay for half price and treated myself. They are really light , will be using these on shorter faster runs.

Hello NB, good luck with the return to running!

Interesting read on the music choices, and great running from everyone!

I've not been out since Saturdays long run, but due to go out tonight (in the rain by the looks of things). I am actually looking forward to it.

  • Options

Bring on the rain Lisa E, make sure you wave like a maniac at any other runners you see getting soaked as well image

DS - they look like fun! image

No more rain!! I need it to dry out for the 1st Feb!! Dont really fancy a 50 mile mud fest! image

B2B they are sort of minimalist with a bit more padding. They are described as the half way house between minimalist and normal runners. Although yours are proper minimal !
