TV - what's your take on Intelligent Design?  personally I think it's one of the biggest dangers to man's advancement as a rational thinking species and is somewhat regressive even within modern christian circles

  • Options

Intelligent design is a dodgy subject. For a while it looked as though it was going to take off but thankfully people are moving away from it, from what I can tell. Its premise is very interesting and some aspects make sense. I have a problem with Darwinism too, that their seems to be huge gaps in human evolution-that may be because we have not found the evidence yet. Believe it or not this isn't something I dwell on too much. ID doesn't leave any real space for evolution. Although I stated above, although I have a slight problem with Darwinism thats where I would pin my colours if I had to.

yep - ID is a very dodgy subject, not so much from a theoretical view but more practical in the way that it has been rammed into kid's education (albeit in the US mainly) as the be all and end all and Darwin doesn't even get a look in.  that's the danger.  but then I guess the US is more fanatical in it's religion than the more tolerant Europeans.

as a life scientist myself, Darwinism just makes sense as you can see it happening in real time so by extending that backwards, you can see how species have evolved and in many cases died out. sure, there are gaps but when you're looking at life on Earth having existed for over 2 billion years, and Homo species being part of that for over 3 million years, there are bound to be gaps in knowledge. I think the interesting thing is the pace of human evolution now - we are very much into the "kinetic phase" of our evolution with everything happening so quickly.  I'd love to be around in say 10000 years time to see how we have progressed/regressed/died out/left for the stars/etc.

it will also be interesting to see how organised religion copes as well

I completely agree. I like to think everything in life starts as a seed and grows. This can be seen in many different ways. Their is nothing saying God didn't plant a seed to see it flourish. Although looking at the world today is debateable image But it aint all that bad out there. I think 10000 years time perhaps we will not even be here. But if we are I hope its like the film 'Running man' image Seriously can we really ever prove God does not exist? Because you will say in 10000 years time we discover what created the universe, a Christian will say oh yeah Gode mad whatever that happens to be and that will continue forever

When you look at the stars and the galaxies and the sheer vastness of space and time.  I can't help but feel it is amazingly arrogant of us as a species to think that a creator would be looking down on little old us and caring about our minute little lives (back to folks praying for parking spacesimage)

  • Options

I'm afraid my intelligence is very limited. My belief in God is slightly similar to some Buddhist teachings of a God within yourself. I cannot get my head around God looking down on us etc. Perhaps because the thought would scramble my brain

Is "ID" dying out?  In the US, it seems to be growing.  There's votes to be had from them there retards, and more and more states seem to be bludgeoning rational thought out of the way with their bibles, and having "god did it, a few thousand years ago" tought in science lessons.  Scary.

  • Options

USA dont count lol Anything goes there image There was a bit of an uprising here with it but its slowly receded. Yes the Americans like something new and do not always think it through. Mormonism is a good one

  • Options

NB I'm not saying that all religious people are retards... just the ones who insist on beliving that god did it, a few thousand years ago

And likewise, I'm not suggesting that all christians are scary... just ones who believe that god did it, and can't wait for god to come back in a fiery holocaust, and want to get her finger on the nuclear button.  But fortunately, neither Palin nor Bachmann made it through nominations this time round!!

Edit: you can't say that the US doesn't count.  Conservative christian fundamentalism over there sets half the political agenda.  And for the roughly half the time that the the Republicans are in power, it's a real influence on the world.  If george bush was a buddhist or an atheist or a hindu, there would be no soldiers in the middle east right now.  Well, no British or Amercian ones, anyway!

  • Options

Saying US doesn't count was in jest. Its quite obviously daft to think the world is 6000 years old. I went coasteering the other day and cam across loads of fossils. Even my limited knowledge I would say they were slightly older than 6000 years old.

At this moment in time the average Christian is a 13 Year old black African girl. Christianity throughout the world is spreading quicker than ever before, believe it or not. The rise in China has been massive and it also has been huge in many 3rd world countries. Even in UK today Christianity is slowly growing. Your average british Christian I am positive will be a nice person with perhaps some strange views to you and I. But essentially they are not hurting anybody. Its when Christianity or 'Religion' does merge with politics it can get really messy. As i have said religion and common sense should go hand in hand. I cannot see a loving God threatening to wipe all Atheists off the face of the earth, thats not how he rolls. As for the rapture, I dont even think the word is mentioned in the bible. Also I can count on 2 hands the amount of ends of the world I've lived through. Im starting to think im immortal

Mean, mode or median?  Mode I hope, unless Catholic priests are involved.

This will mainly amuse Fat Buddha.  It was the response from conservapedia (the conservative "answer to" Wikipedia... which is incorrectly biased because it doesn't hate homosexuals, like God wants) to a microbiologist reporting evolution in E. Coli under lab conditions.

    http://www.conservapedia.com/Conservapedia:Lenski_dialog

    Gotta love those kerrraaazzzeeeeeee yanks!

The bizarre thing is, why conservapedia published it, when it makes them look like idiots?!

nice find Mr O - and yes, why did they publish it when they are made to look like dicks especially with the PS through to PPPPPS.

and fundamentally they seem to forget that bacteria are very good at undergoing genetic mutation at quite a rapid rate (which kind of underpins Darwinism) - vial of MRSA anyone???

Oh dear I kind of wish I hadn't read that...... scary scary people

I probably spend too much time on american politics as I have american relatives..... however I find it utter baffling that the party that purports to be the 'christian' party seems so determined to promote selfishness, greed, hatred towards others, death (as in death penalty), lack of healthcare!!!!!!!!!! and they want to tax the poor whilst reducing tax on the wealthy.

    It's just messed up.

(and I noticed how they continually referred to Obama in a manner designed to make folks think he is muslim - I mean COME ON PEOPLE)

  • Options

Yup its super scary. But thats what Atheists see. You would never see on the news 'Christian does something really nice' Its alway 'so and so says yes to death penalty oh and he's Christian'

  • Options

The "And lest you accuse me further of fraud, I do not literally mean that we have unicorns in the lab. Rather, I am making a literary allusion" made me laugh more than the PPPPS's

The page on Barack Hussein Obama doesn't hint that he's a muslim, it says outright he "probably" is.  It also says he's a non-american dog eating immigrant b*stard!  And I quote

Obama ate dog meat as a child.

Obama claims to have been born in Hawaii to Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr who had married just six months prior - on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  This story is likely a complete fabrication. After many leading conservatives including the leadership of this site and brilliant business man Donald Trump AKA "The Donald" called for Obama to release his birth certificate he did on April 27. However most experts have determined to be a fake and no legal body has determined its authenticity.

TV - I used to know a lot of nice people who were christians but I also knew some bad people who were christians - I have found, on the whole that being religious doesn't make you more likely to be one way or the other.  People are a mix.

I do get the feeling that there is big section of the moneyed right wing in America who think that they somehow 'deserve' their wealth and status because they good little girls and boys who have made god happy and he has rewarded them with 'stuff'' and all those awful poor folks are that way because somehow they have pissed god off and therefore deserve to starve, have no healthcare, live in squalor etc etc ......  it's the only explanation for their horrendous policies and the staggeringly hypocritical things they say.....  I really must stop watching fox news.image

  • Options

Yup. Watched a programme the other day about the poor in USA and it was absolutely sickening. It is just a shame that some Christians do not stop to think 'Love your neighbour' So does that mean these right wing Americans are doing what Jesus asked? Don't sound like it! They are the Hypocrites/Pharisees that Jesus talked about back in the day

  • Options

yeah - and they seem to HATE women for some reason.

  • Options

I thought that they liked women... wasn't the Virginia "forced internal examinations for Jesus" bill designed simply to give them a free thrill?

Well what about the 'women as livestock' bill in Georgia - that one is super lovely.

We need to leave behind the liberal interpretations of the Bible that emphasizes pacifism.  The wimpy, effeminate Jesus,  a sentimental, non-ethics based concept of love. Remember, liberal protestant theology is one step away from socialsm - and socialism leads to homosexuality... do you want that for our children? - if you do - well, just lie back open your butt cheeks think of the founding fathers and let Satan into you heart you pinko sinner

Support the 2nd Amendment - don't love your neighbour... he wants a peice of your ass - arm yourself bretheren - and if your left eye offends you - shoot the mo'fckr before he shoots you

    The rapture's a'comin - ya'hear now?

    Cake,

Na thats fine and thanks for being brave enough to say it. I genuinely think people are interested in Religion whether they believe or not as its such a vast subject. Plus its all around us and has shaped the world, whether you know it or not image

Corinthian, erm I appreciate your enthusiasm image

Funny you bring up a wimpy Jesus coz I think the opposite. He would have mixed with fishermen and all sorts. He mixed with the botom rung of the ladder. He would be drinking and swearing and having a laugh with them. He was pretty hardcore, trashing the temple in Jerusalem. Thats the same as you or I going into a Mosque and smashing it up whilst morning prayer is going on. He was beaten half to death and still managed to crack on to be crucified. He lived in a harsh world mixing with harsh people. People wanted him dead. The real Jesus was no P***y. image He would have been a bloke you would see down the pub. He was quite a blokey bloke.

No, beat her. She is a devil-child.

I think presents are usualy along the lines of those awful little card things with sappy verses on - I work in a very catholic town ( if you can imagine such a thing) and the local card shop is full of these horrific things. I can only imagine they are for first commmunions.  Little necklaces with angels on, little praying hands, little Virgins marys etc etc

Re the dress - mmmm I suspect most if not all of the girls will be in dresses.
