TJB - thanks dude. I'll do that. I'm annoyed as have a 14 miler in Coniston with a friend on Sunday next that I really wanted to do...

Now I'm watching Ireland on delay - Italy are hammering us. And Brian O'Driscoll got deservedly sin-binned! Dear oh dear.

Iain, i'm no sports physio, i don't know what condition your achilles is in. maybe it's just sore from the long run, have you had a good feel? can you feel the lumps where the strain is. If its that then you'd be wise to rest. Of course 7 days off from now to Coniston might be ok - but if you run Coniston i'd run conservatively (especially the uphill bits)  - definitely abandon any time goal for Paris. The main thing is to get round without having too much of that numb dull heel pain that makes it really difficult to run properly. I had it for 16 miles in London2010 and for the last 12 miles it was quite annoying to say the least. 6 weeks off running after seemed to make it go away, but i am always mindful of doing the right the stretches before i run/and after. Good luck fella - you're a doc right? get a colleague to check it over.

@DV - I'll be letting a few people know the river conditions in mid week so you can plan a shoe choice. Currently it's really muddy

I'm sorted...  I'm wearing my Hoka Stinson Evo.   It was toss-up between those and the Hoka Mafate but I will go with the Stinson Evo because they are just so comfortable and still have a trail grip.  The Mafate are just a bit too stiff, although arguably the grip is better.   I'm taking waterproof over-trousers, gaiters and will be prepared for anything..  I tested my new Pretzl head-torch last night and it's so bright it lit up my entire garden.

Will you be around that weekend..?   I'm heading into London on the train and will then get the District line out to Richmond.    Hopefully Mrs DV will collect me from Oxford, otherwise I'll get the train home.

Jimbob - will do; I normally go to a sports physio and will book this week. It's my calf/gastrocnemius, it's painful, tender and swollen. Rest and massage/ice will be sensible. Coniston will just be a slow circuit. It's a marvellous run. My time focus for Paris went on Wednesday. I was broken at the running club, so disheartening.

For you, Iain Moore 2, the war is over....

image You've done 32. The miles are in your legs. Now, you can take care of the injury, rest and get ready for the Start. And the pub.

Someone needs to invent edible soap so I can eat while having a shower. Or waterproof food.

Danni, Emmy, Iain - hope you get sorted quickly. Night walk?

DLR - good to hear you're on the recovery ladder

Sally - the good news is you managed to keep on pace despite all that going on image  John Wayneing here as well. I'm afraid to sit down in case I never get up again, and I've been dithering on delaying having to go upstairs. Pub's an Irish bar called Corcorans, Rue St Andre Des Arts.

Jimbob - good toes, naughty toes?

Weedy - you're no ballerina, it seems!

Emmy - sorry, missed you out, best wishes for your recovery too... Have to say (may have already), on 2 separate occasions when I've been struggling with training, I've been questioning myself (and stealing this from WWKD) - what would Emmy do?!

  • Options
Yeah Weedy, in case you'd thought taper madness had already kicked in!

    Question for the experienced marathoners.

My wife and I ran a half-marathon in November.  After the race we healed for a bit, then started training for Paris.   When it looked like we'd not be living in France for the race date, we dialed back our training to just a couple easy runs per week, mostly because it was too cold to want to go outside.  Then our plans changed a few weeks ago and we would be here for the race, we began to try to train for the race.   Maybe it was too late, but we are both injury-free and felt like it was possible.

Because I've been running quite sometime and she has not, our training plans are not really the same.   I have done things similar to what I'm doing now and feel pretty confident that my body can handle the jumps in mileage.   However, for her, I'm not sure what to advise.   Her plan has 2 more long runs, which might be a bit late considering everyone is tapering now.

    Her plan is as follows:

2-3 short runs per week (4-6 miles), plus one longer run.
Long runs have been:  8, 8, 10, 12, 15 (planned tomorrow), 18 (planned next week).

For me, my longest run is tomorrow (18), then I plan to taper.

Would people advise her to keep this plan, or pull it back?  She has been running for 3 years, runs a 9:30mm pace in training runs, has been feeling good during her runs and has a goal of just finishing.

Rick James, at this late stage just go there to enjoy and survive. Both go out tomorrow and run as far as you can at a slow pace. Try to stay on your feet as long as possible and don't worry about pace or distance. That is your last long run as any more will do damage. Then do a longish mid week and maybe 12-14 next Sunday- and then just jogging therafter.

Iain Moore, sorry your achilles got worse but don't panic. It is best to ease right back unless it goes away quickly. You can try non-stress stuff like bike and swimming with your legs to keep the heart and endurance up. If it's still very sore up to the race it's a big call. I'd probably aim to jog round but stop half way if it's painful in the race (nearest the finish point) rather than risk damage. Nice to meet you again by the way.
