I did the same this morning! Not too keen on that hilly bridge at 20 miles - but wow - hopefully there will be so much to look at we wont realise the pain that we are in!

Know what you mean NR. Will be a tricky one to pace, I think: uphill start followed by a falling-off-a-cliff-steep downhill section. Hmmm... I've been doing long runs taking in Greenwich Park in the hope that it'll help!!!

All be worth it in the end though!

Its the hilly bits in Central Park at about 22/23 miles that's worrying me!!

george - I get there midday on Friday and then would like to get the registration out of the way. Of those who've contacted me only 3 of us arrive on the Friday. No idea for meeting places yet.

We are going to be able to do this - right? (spot the nerves - not run for 4 days due to calf strain)

Good job I didn't know about those hills before now! Ignorance was bliss!!
  • Options
Sorry for mentioning them hills, Cheeky.

You'll be fine NR - you've got that good long run from last weekend under your belt already!
  • Options
I'm going to run up and down the stairs tonight just to practice (no hills where I live!)

have e-mailed all with the current list of who's going etc. If you didn't get an e-mail and you would have expected one, either you are not on the list and/or I don't have your e-mail address. E-mail me from this post if you want to be included.

    Guys

I've been logging on and off and posting a few bits here and there on these forums for about a month now and I have to say I think its brilliant that you're all planning on getting together in NY. I'm sure most of you have never met but you've all got the one thing in common - you're doing arguably the best Marathon in the world. I just chuffin wish I was there again too!!!.

Perhaps we could all do the same thing at London in April, I'm sure most people will be staying in town on Sat night?

Have a beer or two afterwards and all the very best to all of you - enjoy!!

    New Runner ....
Don't know about the threesome with Caketin, but I'm relying on you to run with me .... Note the confidence!!!!! Yes we will run it and yes we will run it in under 4.30 !!!!! There are still six weeks to go - plenty of time to get over the strains of the high levels of training.
Looking at the list compiled by Oldbones, there are eight of us who would probably be able to run comfortably together ( at least for the first few miles ) ...from 3.45 - 4.30. Myself, you, Oldbones,Jane Gallagher,Cheeky monkee, Romford runner,Keith and Anji.

Somebody - please send me some motivation please....after the euphoria of the 20miler at the weekend, I'm struggling big time! Last night went for a massage, everything in bad shape - told to rest - everything was going so well.....and now I'm just down about it all....HELP!
  • Options
George - OK OK i'm just getting a bit nervous that's all! I haven't been able to run all week and am desperate to increase my long run this weekend (only really 5 long runs left-gulp!)
Cheeky Monkey - Dont panic!! As the wise George said still a while to go and you're gonna be absolutlely fine. you've already done a 20 miler! What more could you ask for? you know you can do it!!
  • Options
Quick question - having not run all week am I prone to re-injur myself by attempting 18 on saturday?
  • Options
    NR,

By all means try, that was what I was doing in the run up to london, however if it starts to give you problems then stop as you will only make things worse.

  • Options
Keith - Thanks...but do you mean that you were only doing long runs?
  • Options
NR, I was only managed 2 runs/week, one long and one of about 5-6 miles, all in I only managed 3 of 18+ and 2 13's from the beginning of Febuary!

Oi!! All this negative thinking really won't do!! I can't turn my back for a few days even (business trip to London - NR I think it was you who got lost in London,, well I know what you mean. Mrs SY3 was hit by a loony on a motorbike too, as she was crossing the road - not seriously hurt luckily, but badly shaken up - what a place - I was glad to get back to the sticks in Shrewsbury, I can tell you!!) without the mood swinging!

Anyway, you have got to be positive!! Stop thinking about what you can't do, think about what you can!! There are a lot of 'glass half empty' people out there!! Just think - how did the glass get any water in it at all - cos someone put it in - just remember that!! You're all doing just fine. If you think you can't do it, then you won't, but if you think you can, then you will. Cheeky Monkey, just think about where you've come from - and where you're going - I hope that that's good enough. How many people even bother to put on a pair of running shoes? How many can run a half? And how many 20 miles? You can do it, believe me - but you must believe in yourself, too.

I've just been out for 5 miles today - it was Vyrnwy on Sunday then the London trip. NR I don't know how you can run around London - all that pollution, cars etc - and nutcases on motorbikes. Planning a 20 miler for Saturday or Sunday morning, have invested in some gel to bring with. Last time my nipples got sore so I have to do something about that. Actually after Vyrnwy I noticed quite a few blokes with red patches on their vests. Can anyone suggest anything other than petroleum jelly - which I don't like?

well said SY3 - none of us must let the wheels come off now. Many of you are far ahead of me in training and I'm still on my planned schedule so don't worry.

re: jogger's nipple - there have been many posts over the time I've been using the forum and the options seem to be vaseline or plasters of varying sorts. However, there was some recent mention of a vaseline type gel called Bodyglide which had the lubricating qualities without the drawbacks of stained clothing etc. At first it appeared it was only available in sex shops (!) but then it became clear that triathletes use it too and is available from their specialist shops.

NR and SY3, thanks for the power of positive thought.....i'm going to try a 6 miler tonight after work, fingers crossed it'll go OK - and try to get my head straight again!!!!
  • Options
Just go for it and don't you dare have a negative thought

    Thanks for the tip OB

N.R. , Me Wise ????? If I was wise, would I be running marathons ????

Seriously though, if you are not running much, its important to try and keep the long runs going - they are the basis of all your training and are less likely to cause or seriously aggravate any injury. AND BE POSITIVE _ WE WILL RUN NEW YORK
    Keep us posted. George.

I hope you're right! It's 6 weeks away and I had an awful run tonight. I only managed 7.5 miles on Sunday because my orthotics are giving me blisters and they cut short tonight's run too. I'm not even sure they help my shin splints. They just seem to move the pain elsewhere. I don't think I can risk using them just now so I think I'll go back to my regular inserts until after NY. If I don't get a good long run in on Sunday I'll be extremely p**sed off!

Well - I wemt home, put my kit on and got out the door before the sofa and it's negatvie thought generator could trap me.....6 miles and I enjoyed it!!! Thanks for the talking up yesterday it really helped...I was running past all these people in their cars with an inwardly smug feeling!! Cheers everyone - here's to a great weekend of long and happy running!

I think we need to share training programmes more with each other as the time gets closer so we can see that many of us are in the same boat. I've had a fairly quiet week as I did a hard (for me) 1/2M last sunday. A couple of gentle 25mins to keep the legs ticking over is all I've done. For the long runs I now think in terms of time rather than distance but tomorrow's equates to about 15 or if I'm feeling ok then I'll push the extra 10 mins.

The legs are still heavy from Sunday so I'm not expecting an easy run!!

    Good luck all.

I was thinking about you last night Cheeky Monkey - wondering what you were doing - so very pleased to read a positive report!

Thanks SY3 - you started the sorting my head out thing!!!
If anyone is thinking about me tonight - I shall be out on the town in Manchester getting very, very drunk (I leave my current job today!!). Tomorrow I shall mostly be trying to recover enough to tackle another good run and perhaps treat myself to a new pair of running shoes to start breaking in for the big day.....

Cheeky Monkey - Have fun tonight...and maybe do the long run on sunday this week (allow alcohol time to absorb!)
George - Am back to my positive self and will positevly be trying to run 18 miles tommorow. Dont care if it takes me all day - if I do it, I'll be delighted! Good luck to all of you for weekend runs...

NR, go for it. As far as you are doing it sounds as if you have put in more than I did for london so you should be fine. If you want it then you can do it.

Good luck to all of you on your long runs this weekend. Hope to get in 20 tommorrow morning.
