Ferdy - I cried buckets last year when I was told not to run for a month - I kept thinking "a month? not run for a month?" I kept thinking about how unfit I was going to get and when I was out anywhere and kept seeing runners I felt so envious..it was three months until I got back to running again and I'm having another month off now and hopefully will be running again shortly but I hate not being able to run.
The one thing I was suprised at, is how quickly I built up my mileage again, I was told by another forumite that It wouldn't take long and he was right, within a couple of weeks I was back doing 6 and 7 miles, which is why I am upset at not being able to run but know that when I do get back it will be worth the time off to recover properly.
Have you seen a chiropractor? do you have any back pain?

I was pretty much the same as Grumble and I have found chiropratic treatment the most effect form (with orthotics) of managing my ITBS and piriformis syndrome. I suffer a lot with bakc ache as well.

Horses for courses though... what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.

I don't suffer with back ache at all but the sports clinic I'm going to on monday has a chiropracter (as well as a physio, podiatrist, acupuncture specialist etc). Although my appointment is with the physio, I'm hoping he'll refer me to any of the other specialists that he thinks necessary.

Thanks for the support - it helps.

Pretty sure ITBS is my problem at the moment. I couldn't run for 9 weeks last year (same time of year actually with left hip pain), then since the Marwell 10k (which is blidin hilly) I haven't been able to run much farther than 2 miles before the pain in the side of my left knee kicks in. I did make up a lot of time on the downhills at Marwell (can't resist speeding downhill) and I think this may have caused it.

Thing is, it doesn't hurt at all when I'm not running and then it doesn't hurt at all until about 1.5-2 miles, by which time i'm in the middle of a wood with 2 miles to get home!

My question is, how long do I leave it before trying again (last attempt Sun, 2 miles on treadmill before it began to niggle)? I am strengthening gluteas medius and doing some stretches.
  • Options
Give it 3-4 weeks rest and then try again....well that's what I was advised but ended up taking a lot longer.
  • Options
I rested for 3 months until my physio said to try running. Basically she twisted my leg in the same way as my first appointment and I felt no pain. On my first appointment with the same twist of the leg it was extremely painful so best to wait until a specialist tells you to run again as they can simulate what running does in one big twist of the leg.

thanks for your replies certainly helps to read other peoples' problems - I am upset at the mo especially because it is the Gt Manchester Run on Sun and I cannot do it I'll get over it as i am not going to do anything silly like trying to run before all the pain has gone - have to be patient i suppose!!!!!!

Having similar experiences to a lot of you, i am finding slowly increasing distance along with stretches but i think the cause was the wrong shoes,

recent runs have seem 3.5 miles at 10 min mile pace. when the pain was bad i did a bit of cycling as well which helped a bit!

Fat Fyes - it's horrible, I know, but you need to give your body a chance to heal properly.

Flateric - glad to hear you're able to start increasing your distance.

I went to the physio in my university's sports clinic this morning. She reckons I've got weak glutes which cause my hips to collapse out as I run, putting pressure on my IT band. This makes sense as I know I run a bit knock-kneed! She has given me exercises to strengthen my glutes and has suggested I get prescription anti-inflammatories as the Nurofen doesn't seem to be working. She hopes to get me back running (short distances only) next week though which is good news!

Ferdy - that's great news:O)..I do clams to strengthen my gluteus.

My hubby went for a run yesterday (1st one since London) but I couldn't go with him:( I am determined not to run again until I can't feel any pain at all. I was in the passenger seat on Friday for 2 hours and my knee seemed to have 'locked up' and was really painful until I had been walking for a few minutes.
  • Options
GTG you also want to strengthen those quads as well. You knee locking after sitting down in a car for a long time sounds more like PFP.
  • Options
Steady - I do stregthen all my leg muscles - including quads...I do nearly 2 hours of exercises and stretching every day. I had the same locking when I had itbs in my right knee - just one of those things I have come to except that, until I get back to running un-injured, I will have to put up with:O(

knee pain is still persisting a bit. planning on a small plod tommorow to keep things going ut i am still going to keep physio appointment in any case.
  • Options
Grum, I get a knee locking sensation with mine too. It's not too bad but I'm aware its there, especially if I've been sat for a long time or if I get up from having been in a crouched down position for a while (something I do a lot at work).

I'm going for frequent gentle plods like you flateric. I can do about 2 miles before I can feel the niggles, but it appears to be easing a bit. I'm also cycling lots, which doesn't cause any discomfort at all and I'm doing all those exercises to build my glutes and stretch my ITB. In fact, I've been doing bum exercises so much I believe I'm going to end up with buns of steel!

Ferdy, you need some diclofenac from GP and this needs to be taken regularly for a day or two before you'll notice any improvement...but its good stuff.
  • Options
Fat Eyes...Buns of steel - lol - I have found that doing all the exercises had really toned me up - I have a six pack which my other half is really envious of ha ha
I thought I would have a small run on Wednesday but after literally 1 minute I could feel the pain inside my knee so stopped before it got worse. I'm cycling as much as poss and getting a little frustrated....Woodhall spa 10k definitely out..hopefully be able to do Scunthorpe 10k in July..brilliant fun race.
I have booked an appointemtn to see the doctor on Wednesday so I will apologise for doing the marathon and then ask him to refer me..he is an ex runner so knows pretty much what's what.
Hope we are all back soon.

Fat Fyes - I got Diclofenac from my GP on monday and have been taking it three times a day since. The knee doesn't really hurt anymore but I am still aware of it (it's hard to describe but it definitely feels different from the other knee!).

I've been doing 60-90min of bum/hip type exercises for the last week so I'm hoping for buns of steel too! GTG - what exercises are you doing to give you a six pack? I can do sit-ups till the cows come home but nothing shifts that wee rounded belly I have.

I'm jealous of you guys cycling. My latest physio told me it was probably best not to cycle, just in case, so the only cardio I've been able to do is swimming.

I suddenly started suffering with ITBS,after been running for over 2 years. The pain was awful. Bit the bullet and went to see a podiatrist - who recommended orthotics. Have been building my running time up gradually over last 4 weeks and managed 5k on wednesday without any pain whatsoever - HURRAH!! Only down side is the blisters the "off the shelf orthotics" give me.....
Now,where did i put that surgical spirit????

    Good luck Edwina.

Ferdy - I do supine running and the stick crunch, as on this website
Make sure you hold your belly button in as in pilates - I now do 70 of each.

Someone please please help I am getting soooooo fed up know, I have had ITBS for nearly 3 months now and had steroid injections, stretched, new trainers but still can't seem to get passed 9 mins of jogging. The annoying thing is that I can ride my bike and use the oliptical trainer till the cows come home but as soon as I get on the road/grass I feel the pain within 9-10 mins.... All the good races are flying past.... Sympathy needed.

Rob - have you seen a Chiropractor or physio
    ?

I am seeing a consultant at the moment, I had an ultra sound scna and there was fluid on the knee so I had an injection (cortazone) - excuse spelling. and was told I could start running slowly after 3-4 days so I did and it still hurt after 8-9 mins so I went back but the ultra sound this time showed no fluid so he said keep stretching and use the cross trainer for a while so I did and I was feeling strong so I decided to go for a jog 10-11 min/mile pace but lasted 8-9 mins before the build up of pain started again.
  • Options
    What sort of consultant?
Has he checked out your biochemics?
What strengthening exercises are you doing?
It may be an imbalance which means that whatever treatment you have on your knee..until you sort out your shoes/muscles/any length descrepancies you are not going to get better...what I mean is if you have the wrong shoes or you have a leg length problem (just examples) there is no point giving you a cotizone injection and then telling you to run if your shoes are causing your body to over correct itself causing the problem.

He is a sports physasist - again excuse the spelling. I have new trainers that I ran on a machine and they videoed my gate, theyrecommended me some slightly supportive shoes. I am trying leg raises (out to the side), squats, leg curls, claf raises. The wierd thing is when I went to a chiropractor a few years back regarding whiplash he said I had one leg shorter and provided me with a heal innersole however my neck got better and I lost the inserts - when I mentioned this to the consultant (due to reading a website) he told me my legs are fine and the same size. I think I may need a second oppinion on that.
  • Options
If that is what you were told the first time around, I would suggest you go and see a chiropractor or a recommended physio and see what they say, as, if the heel raise worked and you have had problems since removing them maybe you need them.
You also need to work on your gluteus

Let us know how you go.

I beieve there are two different sorts of leg discrepancy - apparant which is often caused by muscle tightness and some titling of the pelvis and the genetic sort where there is usually a noticable limp.
