We NEED to run Steady! Else we get all depressed and anti-social.
  • Options
....thats my point. How did we manage before we took up running?
  • Options
I get REALLY anti-social - my fiance even bought me a punchbag so that I'd take my frustrations out on it instead of him!

However, 2 physios have said that they're happy for me to start running again so I don't think I'm rushing back too soon. And I am going to build up slowly. No, really!! ;-)

Help! I am having problems with my IT band and I'm not sure what to do.
A bit of background might help.

I started having problems with shin splints and eventually went to a podiatrist who gave me orthotics and cleared up the problem. so far so good..,

But 4 weeks ago I started having problems with my IT band. I went to see a physio who gave me some stretches but said I just needed to see the podiatrist again. I was avoiding it for the time being as I had some races coming up. She didn't really tell me what was wrong either and just gave me a collection of stretches - one of which hurts my IT band.

I have been having problems since which are getting worse and have now seen the podiatrist again. He has tilted my insoles a little further but I don't think this is particularly the problem. I think i am toeing off wrong because of an old tendon injury. WHen I asked about it he just said he didn't know. I had also mentioned this to the physio and she didn't pick up on it either.

I really don't want to spend 4 weeks wasting more time trying out if the changes to my insoles will sort it or if the problem is something else. I just don't seem to be getting a holisitc view from anyone.
I don't think I am particularly built for running but I am no doing extreme speeds/ distance/ runs per week. Only three times per week and about 18 miles.

is there somewhere I can go to see about my running as a whole as I am sure the problems are linked and treating them in isolation just seems to move the problem somewhere else.

    Any ideas?

    Welcome Bootoo,
Everytime I see someone I seem to get a different perspective on my problems - its frustrating isn't it?

I'm assuming your physio didn't watch your run? You possibly want to find someone that specialises in biomechanics and specialises in sports injuries and this could either be a podiatrist, physio or an osteopath. You want to find someone that will watch you running and maybe give you advise on your running style and also a second opinion on your orthotics.

Do you live anywhere near a university that specilises in sports medicine and has a sports injury clinic?
  • Options
I live in the North East and have done a search on the web for somewhere that does gait analysis as well as podiatry and physio etc but the closest place I found was near Leeds. I would travel that far to get this sorted but I don't know whether I am being impatient and should give these a go.
I just don't want to be in situation again a month from now and no further forward. I am supposed to be training for a 14 mile run in July. (also i get very grumpy when I can't run and I don't think my boyf could last for another month!)

Bootoo - can I ask what stretch you are doing that hurts your itb?
  • Options
I lean against a wall with my knees at about 30 degrees and push them togther round a ball. It was to build up my quads becasue the inside weren't as strong as the outside and she thought it might be pushing my knees inwards.
  • Options
I have never heard of this one where you lean aginst the wall with your knee's, I'm certainly no expert but wouldn't this be like kneeling which I was advised against doing so told "no pressure on the knee". you can build up the inside of your thighs with lying on the floor with legs bent and a ball between your knee's pushing together for set times and building it up.

Bootoo - I know how you feel. I tried 3 different physios and a podiatrist and still don't feel that anyone has really addressed the problems related to the way I run. Like you, I don't think I'm built for running (and almost 30 years of actively avoiding exercise probably didn't help) but there's no way I'm giving it up now!

There is loads of good advice on this thread so have a look through it (I read through the whole thing one afternoon!) and maybe try to find out if anyone has any experience of the place in Leeds before travelling all that way.

    Good luck.

GTB the leaning against the wall stretch was in Runners World mag a couple of months agon and I'm pretty sure someone else described it earlier on in this thread when my ITB was really inflamed the stretches used to hurt me as well.

If you want to strengthen your inner quads I found it useful to step up and down off a yellow pages - you are supoosed to do this really slowly and control the movement. I was having a problem where my left leg was locking out underneath me when I initally reaturned to running.

BooToo have you looked up the Walts Reynolds Special? There is a link in this thread probably in the early pages. I'm surprised there is no sports injury clinic closer to you - assuming you live in Newcastle - have you tried contacting your local running shop or running club?
  • Options
Grumble - I think we mean the same stretch but I just described it very badly!

Edwina - I have seen the Walts Reynolds Specical and started doing it yesterday (after studying the instructions for an hours to figure them out!)

I spoke to another podiatrist at a sports injury clinic in Newcastle today. They don't do gait analysis as such - they don't have tread mills and video things - but she said she works with a lot of runners and would be happy to take a look at my orthotics and see if there is anything she can do. She also suggested a deep tissue massage might help. I have made an appointment to see her next week (she is booked up until then which is a good sign).

    Fingers crossed...,

Edwina - I think because Bootoo said leaning against the wall with her knee's I thought she meant actually leaning against the wall with her knee's.
The one that was in rw mag was the wall squat with a ball which is leaning against the wall with your back, a great exercise.
Bootoo - good luck today and let us know how you get on.

Deep tissue massage helps enourmously with the pain relief but it is a deep massage. Remember to breath deeply through the painful parts and drink pletny of fluids afterwards.

I am coming in to join the club. Really wish I wasn't but unfortunatly so.

Started getting this about 6/7 weeks ago and after two running sessions with that feeling in the knee I stopped and rested. I then spent next 4 weeks no running and I was stretching and getting massages (thai massage not sports). Started running again last weekend in my first ever race (wharefdale off road marathon)and that pain has returned GUTTED!

Seems that there are so many different claims to cure it and so many different possible causes that no-one seems quite sure? Guess the main thing is stretching hip and band and strenthening leg muscles.

Does physio really help that much or is it all quite straighforward to do yourself? Does everyone know the cause of their ITBS?

God bless my local running shop! I promise never to buy cheaper trainers off the internet again.
They have told me of a podiatrist who does gait analysis, has all the tread mill equipment, deals with runnners all the time and make his own orthotics! Sounds too good to be true. It's a bit of a travel but if it's as good as it sounds it will be worth it.

Anthony - If you have tried on your own I would recommend a physio but if you can do it on your own (I have this time but only through experince if last time)it will save you a lot of money, however - the physio will be able to give you a deep muscle massage etc that you can't do yourself and they are priceless.

    Anthony,

A physio does help as they give you lots of advice on the mechanics of your body for running and what stretching and exercises you should do avoid ITBS. Some offer either deep muscle massage or acupuncture. I had acupuncture and also ultra sound on the side of my knee. This was well worth it as I have had no recurrence for last 18 months.

Shame as I am skint at the moment and need to not spend money if possible.

Looks like I am gonna have to take the plunge and do it before it gets worse. Stretching and exercise is helping but feel I am treating the symptoms and not the cause.

Anyone recommend a physio the Leeds area? What are peoples thoughts on Podiatry?

I have been looking through u tube at all the exercises and found this one for gluteus made me laugh so much I couldn't even think about trying it - maybe later:O)

Ha Ha! I wonder why there were no men in the Gluts exrecise class.

I think I'll stick to the leg press at the gym otherwise I might get some funny looks.

lol never give up - I wonder???

Just invested in some of the Asics Kayano 13 - brilliant...went for a run yesterday in my GT2110'S and it was a little painful but not so bad that I thought I ought to stop - these little beauties arrived this morning so tried the exact same run and hardly felt a thing - yipee - going to have a couple of days rest now just so I don't over do it.

GTG - that youtube clip is just wrong!

Thought I'd report in on my recovery. I'm slowly building the mileage back up (a max of 5 miles so far) as well as doing some crosstraining (cycling, swimming and circuits classes). I have definitely lost some fitness (some of the runs are tougher than they should have been) but it just feels so good to be training again. I feel the odd niggle in the knee occasionally but I'm phasing out the pattstrap and keeping up the strengthening exercises so hopefully it will keep getting better. It's also getting slightly easier to keep my hips straight and knees apart whilst running which I'm putting down to the increased strength in my glutes/abductors.

Good luck everyone else with your recovery.

That's good news Grumble - hope your new shoes work out for you.

I got my new orthotics last night. They were only a slight increase in the angle so I deceided to have a quick trot in them and no pain. I only did about a mile but 10 days ago I couldn't even walk so it's a definate inprovement.
It was so nice to run again even though my breathing has noticably deteriorated.

I am seeing th physio tonight so hopefully I will get some exercises to help.
  • Options
Thats good news BooToo - was this the same podiatrist or a different one?
  • Options
It was a different one. I am going back to see her in a couple of weeks after I have had a chance to try them out properly.

The insoles are a lot softer so are more comfortable. I will have to see how they go.
I'm just glad to be running again.

Hi everyone! I was posting on this thread early on, thought id come back and give everyone an update!

At the beginning of last september i started to suffer with severe ITBS and after about 5 months of seeing a decent physio she decided it was time for a scan as she thought there must be something else going on in my knee, as i started to get a very sharp pain which i have to stop immediately (too painful) when it comes on in what feels like right inside of my knee joint (on the outide of my knee) She then spoke to a knee surgeon at a private hospital not far from where i live and he suggested that i may have developed a cist in the joint of my knee.

This is when she advised that i get a MRI carried out and to cut a long story short and many months of waiting and not running i had my MRI on Friday, so now its just a matter of 2 weeks until i find out the results.

Im really hoping they find something so at least it can then be treated! I dont know what im going to do if they dont find anything!

I can still do everyday things and im in no pain at work or at home, the only time i get pain is walking my dog for any distance.
However i can't run more than half a mile without getting severve pain on the lateral side of my left knee followed by my IT Band tightening up slightly.

Its good to hear from you Bennett and I hope you get some positive news soon - at least something is happening.
  • Options
Thanks SE, I decided to save myslef £500 on a private MRI so my Physio wrote a letter to my GP and my GP refered me to the specialist at a NHS hospital then they booked me for a MRI.

From my GP to the Hospital was a 20 week wait! then waiting for the MRI was 8 weeks!
