How many of y'all are using Garmin Connect? I do - I'd like to try their connect with other people thing.
Although I live and work in the US health system (and have benefited from it), I do believe it is not the best way to deliver health care. There are many benefits to it, but there are also many downfalls to it.
JB73 - congratulations, that's an immense improvement.
Dannirr - I'm on Garmin Connect, didn't realise we could connect with others via it!
Also, I admire much about the US health service - the research and facilities are world-leading - but it does seem rather restricted to those that can afford it and is run as for-profit. Which, frankly, I find unethical. Of course, I can see the same thing happening in England - not just because the Conservatives are in power (Labour pushed us full-throttle towards private providers) - and I'm not happy about it. Where else can I work though?
Sorry to go on.
YM - sounds like a conversation we should have over a few beers, in a small Parisian back alley pub, some Sunday evening in early April, possibly?
Incidentally, my mate Stuart Flanagan has a documentary on 'Expressing Pain' on Radio4 at 4pm this afternoon. He has a very down-to-earth way of investigating medical issues and I'm looking forward to hearing his research:
Good lad Iain - that's Mr Maj's evening sorted while I, erm, celebrate...I hope....
James B that is a stonking performance - bloody well done you. That's a huge chunk to knock off on a hilly course. I smell a sub 4 coming along nicely...
Ooooh I shall have a listen to that, Iain - I usually have radio 4 burbling away anyway.
Kaz - stop worrying, woman. Really. Your proiority just now is to get yourself properly better and ready to tackle another round of training. Fretting about it is going to mess with your head even more...and yes, I do know how hard it is to switch it off
Tricky - You should have said...I've never been the UZA but heard a lot of good things about it. I've got mixed views of Belgian healthcare and definitely see the positives of the NHS but if you need something quick - you can get it here. I remember when I had issues my knee - I was see by the specialist, had an ultrasound and diagnosis with full xrays within 24 hours.
Am feeling a lot better and have a conondrum. I've been offered another double marathon in December (15-16). I've worked out the finances and can afford it but it'll just be a few long days of driving.... But the question is: should I? Thoughts?
Emmy: out of interest, do you remember the contact details for your specialist?
On Garmin Connect there is a little envelope button on the top right of the screen: when you click on it it says "No requests right now. Connect with friends" and then you can search for people. My "display name" is njenki if anyone wants to try connecting to me.
Neil and YM - I've sent requests. I am imoore45. You'll, on acceptance of request, both be able to see I've had a 15 day layoff and a very poor post-Berlin time of it, running-wise!
TD - Sounds like a nightmare for you. I really hope they can find the route cause and that it's treatable.
"Root cause" - unintentional pun Eggy or a moment of brilliance?! Good luck with the madness thing. I can lend you a Red Dwarf box set if that would help?
YM, TD - being the sort of Lefty pro-NHS evangelist that I am, I have a full respect for the Northern European provision of health care, based on appropriately taxing people that can afford to pay. Instead of giving all the money to the banks. Yes, I know it sounds dangerously close to Communism but there you are.
I think most statistical analyses would put me in the 'can afford to pay' bracket Iain and I have to say, the suggestion that people like me should in someway subsidise those who are less fortunate, is absolutely typical for what I would refer to as "living in a civilised society". I'd call myself an experienced idealist but my many American friends think I am infected with a variant of Ewe-row-pee-uhn So-shall-iz-m. I prefer the word informed to infected.
James B 73 - have to say, that's a hefty chunk of time to loose in a short space of time. You must have made a big decision to up your training. Are you getting lots of support from your family for that? Well done, great effort.
Emmy - good to hear you're better. How far away is it and what do you want to get out of doing it - ie are you planning to get a PB, just doing it for the experience etc etc?
My garmin arrived today, I am so excited! When I'm set up, I'll let you know my garmin connect name, although you'll out me all to shame with your running!
Yer maj, thank you so much for the kind childcare during marathon offer. If I do take the kids, my ex will come too, there's no way I'll cope with a six and an 8 year old in the build up to the marathon! I'd like to take them, I'd like them to be a part of it. On the other hand, I could stay on for a couple of days, have coffee in street cares, go to museums and shopping....
Started my training today. An hours plyometrics DVD this am to strengthen my legs and build power, and a 4 mile easy run this pm. Resistance training tomorrow and fri, intervals on wed, tempo on thurs and long run on Sat. Rest on Sun.
I'm finding all these starting running stories so inspirational. Mine's not so inspirational! I needed to get fit, I like a challenge, I'm cr*p at team sports, and it's easy to fit in. It's very personally rewarding too. I love the intensity, nothing has ever matched that for me. I can get my hr higher running than doing anything else (although there are certain places I haven't worn my HRM to check!)
Weedy, am I allowed to join the races list or am I too new?
If so, I'm doing the a 10k in christchurch, dorset on 9 Dec, knacker cracker 10k on 1 Jan, the Bramley 20 on 17th Feb and possibly the Worthing 20 in March.
I'd like to get some half marathons in, but haven't decided on them!
Woah! HoleyMoley - please don't rush out and do an hour of Plyometrics straight out. I've no idea about the DVD or how it introduces you to this training mode but please be very careful. It's a very aggressive form of exercise - building explosive power - but it's a long way down on the priority list of training needs for a marathon runner. You should introduce Plyometric training very carefully. Easy to get injured. If it doesn't tell you that in the first 3 minutes of the DVD, be very cautious!!
Iain - will go and fiddle with my private things - on Garmin Connect that is.
Awww, thanks trickydicky for your concern, but it's a p90x DVD that I've been doing once a week for a few months. It's one of my favourites as my mileage increases I'll cut it out to give my legs more of a rest, but at the moment, the only change I've made to my usual routine is to add one more gentle run.
Holeymoley - course I'll add you to the list - you don't even have to ask Same goes for everyone else out there. I'll leave the Worthing one off until it's a definite. Know what you mean about team sports - I'm exactly the same.
Comments
James.. that's an apic performance! Well done!!
TD - hope it goes well

Weedy - Thanks from the true North!!!
List fairy, can you please remove the Strathearn Marathon for me?? Otherwise engaged that weekend now!!
I think I am some way behind you all..........my training programme doesn't begin until 31st Dec or am I just being lazy?? And now slightly worried??
And any more info on the medical certificates??? Not that my doc would sign mine just now anyway!!

Neil I've added you. I am, very originally, yer_maj...
Neil and YM - I've sent requests. I am imoore45. You'll, on acceptance of request, both be able to see I've had a 15 day layoff and a very poor post-Berlin time of it, running-wise!
Iain - you need to change your settings so your connections can see your profile...otherwise we'll not be able to point and laugh....
Iain - accepted. I think you need to go into settings/ profile and change so that "my connections" can see your runs (just did that myself, too)
Great minds, Yer Maj...
Neil, YM - should be fixed now!
Didn't know you could do that on Garmin Connect - I'm jfdp1974 for anyone bothered
Weedy - connected.
In fact, lost my charger and haven't uploaded for 30 days - ulp!
Charger's back and marathon plan starts tomorrow.

TD - you're accepted too but have your info protected...
Man, this will have to act as my kick up the rear to get back to training, methinks!
Dannirr - this was all your idea! What's your moniker?!
James - Very well done on the PB.
TD - I'm willing to claim moment of brilliance even if it's a complete and utter lie!
Can't fib about training any more...
Emmy - good to hear you're better. How far away is it and what do you want to get out of doing it - ie are you planning to get a PB, just doing it for the experience etc etc?
