I thought it's very overcrowded for the first few miles in Berlin - I hope I'm wrong. Hoping to get near the front of my wave though I always go off too quick so it might help to start sensibly for once.
Two tiny runs still to do and then it's Germany here we come.
All getting a bit adjacent isn't it! Massage today although I might jog a cheeky 4. Crowded will be quite good for me as it might rein me in a little bit.
its a big marathon it is crowded but there is plenty of room as there are wide roads at the start. Its nowhere near as bad as London or Paris gets. Take some comfort from the fact its a recognised PB potential course. worst thing is when the groups following the pacers come through!
Anybody know how you are allocated your wave? Was it the anticipated time you put when registering or does everyone have to submit certified race results?
I am worried that being a first timer I will be stuck at the back. Having just printed my pace band with splits for a 2:58 it would be pretty frustrating to be dodging people the whole way...not going to happen.
I think I said 3-3.15 when applying but did it through a charity and can't remember. I feel like 4 months of training have gone to waste!!
Pete7 - on my startcard thing it has the time I said I will run on it also in the Passbook if you have iphone/similar it actually says start block B for me (1B).
Pete7; If you are 3-3:15 start that is block D. I am in that block and am aiming for sub-3 like yourself. To be honest I am not that worried with the starting block assuming everyone ahead of me is already a sub-3 runner or are gunning for sub-3.
Blockbuster; I didn't find the crowds too bad in London. The main problem for me was getting carried away with the pace of the crowd and going off quick.
On start blocks its on your start card thing (mines in passbook on my iphone):
Block A 2-20 - 2-40; B 2-40 - 2-50; C 2-50-3; D3-3-15; E 3-15-3-30; F 3-30-3-50 (me!); G 3-50-4-15; H 4-15 and over. So you should have a start block. If you're aiming sub-3 you really need to be at least block D but even E would probably be ok; if you're in F and G I think you'll struggle with all the overtaking
Done my last run yesterday evening. I am heading down to Dublin this evening from Belfast to stay over as my flight is at 7am tomorrow. Best of luck to everyone running on Sunday!
Fly out of Glasgow at 8.50am tomorrow. Excited and anxious at the same time. Plan on doing the breakfast run on Saturday, then maybe watching a bit of the skating. Good luck to all of you, hope you get the times you're looking for. Bring it onnnnnn!!!
Hi all, a bit late to the party, flying first thing tomorrow morning, wishing everyone a great race and time in Berlin, hope to see some of you pre and post race. Safe travels.
Yep, half the loaf gone already. I made a bit of a schoolboy error though, picked up the "jam" in a hurry and it's actually blackberry "jelly", with no pips. I like the pips!
I thought you were going a bit American you have to have the pips! I have a really small carry on for the flight I'm only going to fit in some biscuits, everything else i'll have to buy in Berlin, maybe squeeze in some malt loaf somewhere
I'm gutted and overwhelmed at the same time. I got a place on the Berlin Marathon (charity) but my boss wouldn't give me the time off and I couldn't afford to get to Berlin, which is .
But then I got a place on the Tokyo Marathon which is
Best of luck to all the Berliners who get to go! Enjoy the race my friends.
5:05:00. Legs went at about mile 17 then reverted to run/walk for the remainder. Then horrible cramp at about mile 22! Still, pleased I carried on the run/walk until the end.
Will I ever do another? Not for a while! Will keep trying to get a ballot entry into london but for now happy to keep on the halfs....the training is just too much for the time being!
Massive respect to everyone that ran. After reading on here about marathons for the past 2 years I now have a new perspective on the whole thing.
CP - Great work! Never say never on another marathon, but see how you feel when you can walk properly again! Hope the recovery goes well.
l had a bit of a blinder. 4 minute PB, 2:31:41 (halfway 1:15:52). The splits suggest textbook pacing but my head was all over the place, so no idea how I kept it going. Well chuffed! A cracking race, and if I can get up from my hotel bed I might even hobble around and see a bit of Berlin!
I ran exactly to plan for my 2:40 target. Halfway at 1:19:56. Cruised through 30 and 35k staying on the pace until 37/38k when a massive stitch hit me out of the blue. Could hardly freaking breathe and was forced to walk and jog home. Finished 2:48. So close yet so far.

Are they tight on policing wave entrances?

Balls.
On my start card it doesn't block it just has it on the pass book. On start pass under address block it says
TO: / Chip: / 02:44:48 / 1983 / MAL
Which is fairly obvious.

Blockbuster; I am actually hoping the start will be slightly slower as I usually burn too many candles too soon and then suffer.
always best to aim for a negative split, although I've never managed it!
Anyone looking to sell their bib last minute?
cant be done mate its all photoID and also wrist bands at expo that you have to wear into the pens, like at festivals!
Final pace run done and dusted. Sausages for dinner. Getting right in the mood for it now!

On the plus side I've discovered my new favourite flavour of Eat Natural bar. Peanut & popcorn with dark chocolate chunks. Mmm!
