Egyptian - do recovery socks make a big difference do you think? My calves (and quads!) still ache a lot!.. Also what do you think of 'skins' products? I'm contemplating buying some trousers/leggins for my long runs and wondered if they do make a difference?
Yes they do, the science behind it works, has been peer reviewed to death and got a pair I don’t use as often as I should. Ex’s dad used to be a rep for Dupoint as well and have a very interesting conversation with him years ago when they first got developed. The eagled eyed amongst you might have noticed I had compression kit under my t-shirt, If you want I can geek up and explain in detail when I get on lunch break. Be warned I’m a bit of a science geek
Cake - absolutely mate if you have the time to explain we are all ears
Hows the stomach today by the way, has it settled down? I always get a dodgy stomach after long races, although thankfully this year I managed to avoid the dreaded runners trotts!
Less tired today, legs ache a bit other than that I feel fine. Going out for a gentle 6 miler tonight with my club, might miss Wednesday club run but will do Thursday speed/hill work. Dont want to do too much or too little either as I am in GNR on Sunday.
Just completed my first half marathon on Sunday in Nottingham. Im online searching for remedies as im struggling with a very upset/nauseaus stomach (apart from stiff muscles and joints) and came across this thread!
Any suggestions as to ease the stomach cramps/pains?
I feel it may be the temp differences experienced, after coming out of the shade of Wollaton park into the heat and sun really had a bad effect on me, ie the cold to hot etc etc
I have had 5 weeks training for this my first marathon, being an ex smoker, i gave up two years ago to my great joy, earier this summer i had a smoking relapse. I soon stopped that and set my target as the RH half marathon.
Well i finished in a time of 2hours 11mins, the last two miles i had nothing in the tank, my legs were lead and just wouldnt do it!!! Up to then i was on a decent pace, 10 mile mark saw 1hour 36mins on my watch.
Anyways Thanks in advance for advice.
Oh and i think you full marathon runners are amazing..........one day it will be me!
Well Done on completing the half! There's a few people suffering with stomach cramps on here - I had them on Sunday afternoon. The only thing I can think of is that the heat played its part and dehydration is ensuing. I've drank so much water in the last few days that I am having to be careful I don't overdo it!
not going for a run till Thursday but its driving me mad I want to get back out their but promised the better half i would take it easy this week so I will not feel bad for the GNR
For some reason new post notifications stopped for this thread, so I've checked back and found pages to catch up on! <img />
I don't think I've done a run where I've used so much fluid. I took something from every station and at times found myself with 3 bottles. A 1/2 empty water to pour over my head and calfs, a full one in back up position and a lucozade to drink. I think one thing that 'got to me' mentally was at about 15 miles, dropping my bottle leaving me with no fluid.
I've now had 2 days wishing I'd bought a bungalow, going upstairs is now a lot easier but downs still slow!
Took a couple of days off work and been doing plenty of walking. Think I might get on the bike in the next few days - exercise without impact.
Good thing is I had concerns before the day. I'd had repeated tightness in my left calf and aches in my right achilles. I figured I might make these worse.
As it happens these 'niggles' now seem to have completely disappeared.
I decided before the race, that no matter how well I felt, I'd not be training for at least a week after. Still sticking with that. Family to the seaside at the weekend I reckon, no more LSR yet!
I notice a lot of people have had stomach problems! My friend who ran with me did too! He took the lucozade and gels on offer on the course. I haven't had any problems in that dept and I now wonder if it was because I didn't take any lucozade!? I specifically avoided the lucozade as when I tried it on a training run I came out in a measles like rash! Interesting........! Not that I'm suggesting anything sinister of course, just interesting.... (Don't know what that little face means, but I liked it!)
I took the advice offerred and tried them out before the race. Lucozade gels are OK with me, although you have to have a drink with you and I take the gel over a distance rather than all at once.
SIS on the other hand I have had a problem with, they were provided at Thunder Run and on my 4th 10k lap I had serious stomach cramps.
I'm still going to try them out again on training runs. It could be the intensity of the event had a greater effect on my gut than the product.
I`m pleased that I trained on LDR`S with Lucozade as I supped enough of it on Sunday! Sick of the sight of it now! I didn`t plan to use gels but took one in desperation at some point with no side effects.
Bleugh can't abide Lucozade in any form except when I'm ill when I'll drink the original one but only if its flat! Jelly babies and water are the way forward guys.......someone asked earlier what we used before gels were widely available - I've always used JB's & water. I can take SIS gels though but they're not as satisfying as JB's!
Considering the ‘gremlins’ reading a slightly higher mileage – and mine was one that did.
I’ve just been reading back on the last RW, which has an article on measuring races. It goes into detail about measuring the ‘racing line’ etc.
Now I don’t know about anyone else, but during that 1st half I wasn’t necessarily following the racing line. Guess if we wre we’d have been running in single file? There were a few times I was actively moving over to run on the shaded side of the street and get out of the heat. Couple of times I saw club buddies and moved over to join them. A few moves like this could easily add to the mileage?
Thats very true Gary - no-one generally follows the racing line used to measure the course. I tried in VLM one year where its painted on the road in blue........ or it was last time I did it in 2008.

Being new to marathon running I don't think I could have finished it without my SIS gels (the lucozade ones give me a stitch)
How did you veterans manage it before the introduction of gels? I assume gels are relatively recent.
I'm feeling much better today. I don't think I'll be ready to run again until at least Sunday though.
I had a good rub after the run in the massage tent so I'm surprised my legs are still so sore - just shows I need to do more training I guess!...
Cake - my stomach is still doing cartwheels too, just feel a little sick, oh well time heels I guess!
Trendyrunner - I'm at GNR too
Dan - well done on completing the marathon

Although I must say, I will do RH again as it was a great race

sorry to miss you at the start ET gave Cake a lift and went to the sweat shop tent but then went back to the car to get my stuff
not doing PP this year going to Bolsover instead but hope to make one of the SSC socials one day if not might see you at one of the park runs
congrats on the good news by the way
Question to you more experienced guys - are the entry and finisher numbers typical?
organisers say for the full marathon 2376 entries
Results say 1567 finishers
that means 809 were either "no shows" or DNFs, only two thirds of the entries finished?
Garry
we for one were a FM DNF
i suspect some did'nt urn up
but i would also assume that as it was chip times they have an exact start figure of how many actually crossed start the line would'nt they

me as well Garry
FOO - Cheers. I should be running Bolsover too.
Gary - yes. Basically, the longer the event, the greater the number of DNS and DNFs!
i never touch any lucozade sport products
they dont agree with me

As a race director, I reckon over our 3 events we get about 10% no show, but the numbers you mentioned sound high.
Think Im going to miss Thunder next year
