I thought I'd be last too, Soup Dragon. I had broken an ankle 4 months before & was convinced I'd be last at the northern one, but I wasn't. If you've trained on hills & don't go off too fast & can run a HM, then I reckon you won't be last
Sounds as though there is going to be at least two short females bringing up the back of the pack!
I figure for this race it's not about where I finish ( like I'm ever in contention for a serious prize! Who am I kidding?), it's simply just about finishing! And with a big smile on my face too....
Having said that, hoping to leave at least one or maybe two six foot males in my muddy wake ..... I may not be tall but I am tenacious.
Think my friends and family are just a little concerned about how excited I am about this race! They all think I'm mad - " it will be cold....and wet...and muddy.."
You bet! And I can't wait! ( Yes but ask me on the morning and see how chipper I am feeling- sure the nerves will be well and truly kicked in by then!)
LOL malice. My friends don't get it either. But this is one race when I don't care if it rains or snows or anything. I don't care at all if I'm last or if I lose both shoes. Its a win-win. Just want the t-shirt at the end.
My daughter's entered the kids race so double excitement for me - she's never shown much interest before. Anyone know if they have to go through the bog of doom too? Any spectator tips?
I'm still veering towards getting some off-road shoes just for this + rest of winter, rather than trash old ones.
I would love to let my daughter run the kids race too but there would be no one to leave her with while I run....I bought a pair of trail shoes online for 45 pounds...on sale, good basic Asics and it means my other road shoes won't get trashed! Plus they have lovely big grippy treads that will hopefully help me a little bit on those steep down hills. Or not! About to test run them in the Miltary 10km at Redhill, London on October 23rd. Figured a bit of mud running practice can't hurt!
I don't think there are obstacles......but Hellrunner is much longer and I think the hills are steeper , more treacherous and more numerous! I thought this would help with pre Hellrunner nerves. If can get through the Military 10, I figure I can face Hellrunner feeling a little more prepared, if that is at all possible.
As far as training goes, I am just going to start running off road in the deer park next door- plenty of hills and horse trails to get try out my new pretty and clean ( sigh) shoes....hopefully I can just throw them under a tap to wash off all that deer and horse poo....
Please, for the sake of all of us novices, any training tips most appreciated!

HILLS HILLS HILLS and MORE HILLS malice.h!!!!!
Get off all roads & do fell races & trail races, so you are used to uneven ground. (Though the trails for Hell up North were good underfoot)
Don't forget those hills are made of sand as well, so they move as you try to climb them!
Moving hills...excellent! And not once but several times. It just keeps getting better!
I will be sure to tackle as many hills as possible, Flat footed and bright Bimbler- thanks for the tip.
I think! And it looks like its the horse trails for me this weekend.
a) Killing old road trainers or
b) Wearing off-road trainers?
