    Hi all

Did my first Tempo run today, 5.03 miles in 55 mins, only problem is found it so exhausting was struggling not to throw up image Felt fine while actually running, wasn't till i stopped that the sick feeling struck, obviously need to slow it down next time.

Hope everyone is well and your running your socks off image

    Afternoon to you All,

What an eventful run today was! Ipod in phone in the pocket and off I went.Felt good a little wind but that was okay.Just getting home after 2.2m when I reached for the phone to find it missing.

Yes I turned round and ran the route again to try and find it and now making it a 4.4m run which I managed in 38m 15s and no phone and my knee didnt feel that bad either.

Rang the number and yes it had been found by a good citizen and I have just collected it.

I don't think we could make up the things that happen to our beginners group. When they wrote the books it shouldnt happen to a vet did they mean vet runners!

Hope all is well with everyone

    Kev

    Hope everyones well
not many people posting over the last few days image

    Hi All,

Absolute complete novice here folks so forgive any mind numbing stupido questions

Just started running (when I say running I mean moving only slightly faster than I do normally) and stupidly signed myself up for a 10 k run in June - gonna follow the beginners guide a few questions though folks

     1. If I train 3-5 times a week and my run is in 5 months is it realistic for me to say I can do a 10k run (hope so 'cos its for charity and its gonna cos me if its a no no !!)

    2. Running shoes - any advice - I am usually a cheapness is best kinda guy when it comes to trainers but I do want to minimise any pain so happy to shell out for anything that stop blisters etc. etc.

     3. Food - What's are the best things to eat before a run and how long before is best (understand this mind vary from person to person but any pointers will help)

    4. I am training in my local gym on a treadmill but is running outside a lot harder (told you there would be daft questions !)

    5. Any other advice - do's dont's (the simplier the better)

Thanks to all for help - any and all advice v v welcome

    Cheers all

    Stu

Right firs toff i didn't quite PB in the end but there is a reason for that which was my left quad was being a bitch and went into quite a bad ache. Typically theres nothing wrong the bloody thing now image

13:13 quad being a right bitch now also caught up with hippo here
11:06 mini everest quad however better for now
    11:15
12:43 quad beginning to ache again
14:10 quad real bad about half way through the mile
16:28 walked to finish due to sore quad it was actually forcing me to walk slower than i would normally image

total distance ran 26.52 miles in 4:50:29 ave pace 10:57

all by my garmin a few seconds slower officailly as it was a bit of a rolling start that caught a fair few people unaware

Met mick and phil as i was trying to find somewhere to park and then hippo shortly after i'd aquired by number. Bumped into Jogging John near the start and pretty much ran with him all the way around, he did go off in front on lap 2 but did admit to gettting carried away and going too fast as i managed to catch up later on.

From mile 20 or so onwards i was keeping an eye on the time and garmin details and up until the last couple of miles when the quad ceased up again i was still on course for a PB of probably no more than 4:40 or even a few mins slower but eerything doesn't always go right on the day so to speak. Like today my bum bag stuffed full of jelly babies was attached around me but as i was walking towards the start it broke so i was forced to ditch it on the way back past the car meaning the only fuel taken in during the run was 3 cups of Hi 5 as i went past that drinks station.

Oh well at least with the lack of pain since i finished i'm confident that there is no damage to the quad so i'll be fine for T2T althugh i stil havn't figured out what method of running i'll do for it. I certainly wont be running for 10+ mile snon stop for this one, something like 25 mins running with 5 mins walking of similar via mileage instead ie run 3 miles walk 5 mins.

Hmm just did a split check via sporttracks for 26.2 miles and i get the result of 4:45:15 which is technically a 10 second PB i wonder if i can check and use that imageThat way people (and me) would win some points.

Hello all ... o my goodness.. If only I'd ran as many miles as I drank pints of cider in the last week !  Great holiday but I'm still recovering.. Think I've gained a stone in 5 days!! ARGH!

it was worth it though - fab time an total change from mummy routine for me!  wicked!

Back to running on Tue for me I think - so lovely to read progress of you all - HI Naomi - you're making storming good progress - very well done!  You should be very proud

Kev .. glad you got your phone back.  Kittenred - sounds like you're making great progress too - good on you!!  please let us know how you get on increasing that mileage?!

Andy .. When I started (for the third time) run walking, I didn't really know how I'd get on - but I staggered round a 5k 5 months after and felt great - I'm still out doing 2.5 or 3 miles couple of times a week an although its only a tiny bit compared to some of the fitter ones on here - I feel great!!  Stick with it - your spreadsheet sounds a great idea - I never realised how motivating things like that can be (I map my routes on fetch now and thats a great movivator!)   Very soon you'll be running 2 or 3 miles continuously and its a FAB feeling!!

Hi Big Stu - u'll get good advice from the more experienced ones here, Yes, spend money on shoes, well worth it, (go to good running shop for advice) ... I like to eat an oatibix breakfast cereal with milk an tiny bit sugar about 2 hours before (slow burning carb) then go for banana smoothie about 45 minutes before ) but I'm only doing wee distances .. and that works well for  me - all the very best!!

    Stu

    1) 3-5 runs a week and 5 months is plenty of time to train for a 10k

    2) go to a proper shop that does Gait analysis (they see how you run) which will lead to getting the right sort of trainers for your running style, the wrong sort can lead to injury. Expect to pay between £60 and £100, mine generally cost me £80-85 a pair and i'll be going through at least 5 pairs this year probably more image

    3) erm all down to personal preference i'm afraid but DON'T eat within 30-60 mins of running.

    4) Yes and no depends on the person, i've been known to do large runs on a treadmill occasionally but i would say running on the road is a good idea as that is what you'll be running the 10k on.

    5) erm just carry on asking questions really when you think them up

    Stu,

    Good advice from Keith.

I think running outside gets you ready for uneven roads and the fact you have wind resistance which you will probably need to get ready for on your big day.

I ask a lot of questions, and nobody here will slam you for it.

Everyone wants each other to reach their potential what ever level that may be.

    Hi Big Stu

I started running five weeks ago and like you am a complete novice. I got my shoes from Sweatshop, used the store locator on their website to find one near me. They get you to run on a treadmill for ten seconds and then from watching that can tell you what shoes are best for you. I was a bit scared at first because it all sounds very complicated but the staff were really friendly and helpful. Each pair of shoes lasts for around 500 miles of running so you get a lot of miles for your money.

10 km in five months is very realistic, though make sure you don't train to much, or you may get injured.

They say if you run on treadmill you should put it on a 1% incline because that imitates wind speed making it more like running outside.

Hi Big Stu - no questions are stupid if it's gonna help you run better and safer.

Ditto what Keith said, plus I'd just add, warm up before and stretch out after your run.

If you have a limited budget (and don't have a guilt complex) get your gait analysis done at a shop and then buy the trainers on line, could save £20-30 that way.  Personally I can't do that, but loads of people do.

  • Options

i generally buy the first pair in the shop as i can try on several different shoes there but i'll then get other pairs from the net

as for stretching never do it cold always warm up with 10 mins jogging minimum first, personally i rarely stretch pre race and i generally dont bother too much with warm ups either as most of my races are long enough to go slow for the first mile or so as a warm up

Hi peeps *pops head into thread looking guilty* my name is earlybird and i haven't since tuesady last week*hangs head in shame* In my defence however i did have my nasty fall on ice with the accompanying whiplash and my scalded arm(ok i know that does't stop me from running but it wa sore) and then at the weekend it was blowing a hoolie up here soo i thought it would be a good idea to 'do davina' .I thought i done fab and was smiling all the way thru imageimage until i got up yesterday morning and now i can't feel my legs bum or tops of my arms(i think i need them to run with as well image)I really should go to running club tonight even if it's just to loosen myself up a tad (i may look a little daft like coz i'm walking as if i have cr*pped myself so god knows what i'm going to look like running(and no i will not video it for you guys to have a laugh at either image)

Gosh you are all doing so well Naomi well done on your 6 miles image Cathy that an impresive talent you have there consuming more pints than running image Kev pleased to hear you got your phone back there are some good samaratins out thre after all  and well done on the run too image

Big Stu some good advice handed out there i would say the most important thing is def getting your shoes right i got mine wrong and suffered terrible with very painful calfs for a long time image just try and relax and enjoy it while your out there as well image(yes 'out there' get outside man it's the best ,wind in your hair and freedom to go where you want different scenery and you can change your pace without having to pres buttons and crap like that)

  • Options

Hi EB - course I've not done any crosstraining - apart from the stuff with my PT.  I know I keep saying it but I really must start doing more cv stuff - climbed 2 flights of stairs at work today - nearly bliddy killed me!  Tendons coming along nicely now, more of a niggle than actual pain - fizz has magic fingers!!  Back to specialist  next week Thursday, hoping once the tendons are cleared up he'll give me the green light to run, but it's unlikely I'll be doing much more than the odd 5k.  I'll keep you posted.

EB!!  How are you doing?  Did you get to club tonight?  Hope so?  If not, tomorro  you are out there... wind or no wind!!?   I managed to stagger slightly less than 2 miles this morning - (a girl at work who runs a lot said "its not worth putting the washing machine on for less than 3 miles!") I like that - and she;s right ... but it was teeming down this morning an still dark - awful - but I felt very virtuous when I returned home like a drowned rat!

Jen - thats good news you're on the mend .. Jendons Tendons on the Mendons .... ha! sorry - I succumbed to a small glass or two of wino o dear!   Still smiling at EB's comment re roast dinner!  Hope you'll be at full fitness very soon!

Keith - how can fetch say you're behind schedule - surely some mistake I fear!!  Any one who wears out that many shoes hardly sounds like he's trailing - have you thought about a shoe sponsorship deal  image
