    Hey all,

Sorry I've not been around for a while. I've been reading but not replying.

Well done on the article Ecky., I'll definitely be buying a copy. I bet Cammie would be so proud of his Mummy! image Don't worry about feeling a little demotivated after your half. It was a massive deal for you and sometimes when you've trained hard for something, it's a bit of an anti climax afterwards, so it takes a while to get back into your grove. What race do you have planned next?

Glad you're still marching on Kwala image Sounds like you're getting on well. Is your mojo back yet or are you still forcing yourself to run? Well on your netball win last night too.

Sorry to hear your weight is getting you a bit down Chocco. Unfortunately, it does take a LOT of willpower to get some decent weightloss, something that I struggled with for a long time. I've lost 3.5 stone in total and whilst I'd love to say that it's all down to running, I really had to take a good hard look at what I was eating too. I wish I was one of those people who can eat whatever they like without putting on any weight. Hmph!!!

Ran my last marathon of the year last Sunday. It was a really tough one because it was off road and quite hilly, but I loved it and the views were stunning (it was around Rutland Water). I appear to have recovered a lot quicker from this one than my other 2 and will try a little plod this evening. Got a couple of halves before the end of the year now, but I'm looking forward to them before marathon training starts again in Jan for Windermere.

Have a lovely day all, despite the horrible weather xx

Hi LK Thank,You.I dont think I realised how much pressure I put my body under, getting back into it now though, did 3 mins with some killer hills, just had to walk up the last little one as just felt drained but then ran the rest of the way home.Felt a bit better today and can feel my mojo returning.I am going to sign up for a 5 miler in Dec near home called the Rudolph run and may do a 10 miler which is another Christmas themed run. Im still not sure weither to apply for next years Marathon through club,I really dont want to be out next season so may leave it till the year after when I will be much fitter.HUGE WELL DONE on yet another Marathon, you are amazing,I seem to have lost my Marathon bottle.

Hi Lostkat thought you were really lost but lost in your running it sounds,  well done you to be so motivated & booked up with events.  i think that's good advice having a few races lined up to reproduce that 1st high of accomplishing your initial goal.  Big pat on the back for your rutland marathon hells bells id have a wobbly if i thought Edinburgh had hills in it (please don't tell me otherwise!)  how did you manage with your plod tonight?   weather is really blowing a hoolie up here but whats a bit of gale force wind right?  i went out for a little jog & surprise surprise my time was enhanced by the wind propelling me round my route felt a bit daft running after my baseball cap past static traffic though!  image oh the shame!  Started my 'shift my tonnage plan'  today hopefully my updates will keep me in check don't want to be embarrassed on line, LK if i could lose 3.5 stone id be a very happy bunny but I'll be chuffed losing a lb a week.  Another gold star to Eckytump losing more this week don't stand sideways Ecky!! Ps have found your marathon bottle in lost property!!!!!  kwala sounds like your netball team are premiere league material 5 wins outa 5 go girl!!

Hi folks - hope you don't mind me stopping by,  I've ben lurking around having a look at the dfferent forums and decided to take this plunge with this one.......

I've been a subscriber to runnersworld for about 3 years (...running was part of the master plan to shift the baby weight from three consequtive pregnancies), my youngest is now 3 and I've yet to put the masterplan into practice!! 3 years later and around 3 stone heavier,  I'm taking the plunge - first step this forum! Second step - do not pour another glass of red wine this evening, third step -  get some form of run in tomorrow.

I've not idea how far, how fast or where even to go. But if I make it out the front door with my trainers on - I'll consider that first step achieved!!!!

I had contemplated waiting until Monday - but reality is I've been promising to start on Monday, for many Mondays now, and that special Monday never seems to come. Then I contemplated a fresh start as a new year resolution until I reminded myself I've had the same resolution for the last 3 years.......so whats the point. Bring on the first Saturday of many - out in the freezing, miserable rain of bonny Scotland hauling my 14 stone butt to wherever  and however far my chubby ankles take me!!!!

    xx

Hi Lazy Nic,welcome.Lovely friendly bunch on here. You can do it,like you say, trainers on is the first step.Your 14st butt will very soon be a skinny running butt.I was 15st 5 when I started running, now 11st 8 and just love running. If I can do it,anyone can.image

Hi Lazy Nic, welcome to the thread. You certainly picked a good'un for lovely support, inspiration, general chit-chat and occasional insanity!! Keep at it and you'll have to drop the 'Lazy' image
Good luck for your run tomorrow, don't worry about speed, and if you need to take a walk break then do

Really well done for your mara LK, did you make it out yesterday?

Chocmonster - that's not fair, when I go out in the wind it's always against me no matter which direction I'm running image

welcome Lazy Nic to a very welcoming bunch, pop in for a rant, rave & sometimes a little running talk!  If your ickle tootsies get you out today just be as pleased as punch that today's your day & you've accomplished your 1st goal to get out the door!  As Kwala said take it easy, do what you can and hopefully you'll want to do it again!   keep us informed

Went for a run tonight folks & it was a lovely trot, weather was still windy but alas Kwala no pb tonight! Didn't look at my gps much either, usually its every half mile!!  One day left  before going back to work on Sun.  Oh dear the work blues image  never mind Strictly's on tonight image oh come on, surely you guys don't watch X Factor image

thanks all for the lovely welcome!

Well I made it out the door this morning, trainers on, and o dear what a wake up call I've just had.  I ran round a local football pitch and only managed 4 laps!! all the while looking at my shadow that looked about as graceful running as an elephant on tiptoes. how did this happen - I ued to be fitimage. Saving grace was that no one was around to see me.

I will try again tomorrow. I suppose the way to start would be try 5 laps tomorrow   Off to Frankie and Bennies with the kids now. Will do my best to choice the sensible salad.

Rant over - hope yourall having a fab weeken.d No doubt you'll be putting my 4 laps to shame, well done to you all, one day I hope I can be the same.

eckytump - your weight loss is an inspiration - well done you.

    Hi guys image

Been a bit of a lurker for a while on here, so i thought i'd finally pop in and say hello!  Taken the plunge and been training for my first marathon for the last 5 weeks or so.  I'm not so much a beginner with running as it helped me shift the guts of 7stone (god i must have been fat! lol) in the past 2 years but definately a beginner when it comes to distance training.

Completed a HM last year in 1.55 which i was happy with as it was a kind of last minute spur of the moment thing, but have never comtemplated anything over the 13.1.  Looking forward to having a bit of craic with you lot image

    Be nice please!

I did the killer hills today with my running buddy, she forgave me eventually and enjoyed the variety.lol. I finally feel comfy again which is good.

Thanks ecky image basically i realised it was time that if i didnt sort myself out id never be able to change it, stood on the scales and they pretty much spun back to zero so decided enough was enough.  Started the GI diet and generally watched my calorie intake.  and endless amounts of running lol

Marathon is Belfast in May next year, giving myself a good bit of time so i can gradually build up to it as i work shifts and im trying to organise a wedding in between times aswell image currently pushing 10 miles as my long run and 3 other 5/6 mile maintenance runs in between so im getting there gradually. missed a whole week of running this week after taking some sort of bug, knocked me for six.  Think i'm gonna have to invest in some multi-vits etc

Hill training = eugh, horrible stuff lol if only we could get away with running on flat all the time eh?

  • Options
Well done,I have been doing Slim world,3st 11.5 down, little bit to go yet though. You will do the Marathon easy, with determination.Wow and a wedding too,you have lots to look forward to.I got rejected from London for next year but will keep trying. I must admit,Hills are horrendous,I just love it after when flat running seems so easy. I have only been running properly for a few months now but have messed around with it for a couple of years.

jesus thats a lot of weight aswell, congrats also! keep up the good work and thanks for saying hi image

Welcome aboard Carl. Amazing weight loss image And great running too, well done on entering the mara, hope you've beaten that bug and get back on track with your training quickly

I've had a few lazy days - no running at all over the weekend. Gave myself a good kick up the bum today before cba's really got a hold and went off out for a little 2.5 miler tonight. Loved it - why can't I remember that good 'end of run' feeling when it comes round to going out next time?! Gonna miss club night tomorrow (well technically tonight!) as have Parents' Evening to go to, but will try and drag myself out - really can't afford to be missing sessions if I want to achieve my goals

Welcome Carl - you achievements seem so far down the line for me!! well done you - amazing

I only managed to get my second run done today (shame on me) - Being new, i'm not sure whether you guys think the treadmill is a cop out!! but I'm working from home and in between meetings I dusted down the treadmill and hopped on.

I'm so much of a running dummy I don't actually even know if my treadmill registers in KM or Miles !!! Anyhow, I managed 20 minutes, running at pace 7.7 (again don't know what this even means) and by the end the distance was 2.5 (again miles / km ???)   Think I might have been able to do a bit more, but slowed to take a drink of water and found it difficult to get back into a stride with it.

I am most definately a beginner!! and I'm sure you pro's are so far past this stage!!, so feel free to give me the tough love, to give me the kick up the butt I need.

Well done on the 2,5 Kwala, you do seem to forget the good feeling,Im just the same.I find it takes me ages to get back into the real swing of running.

Nic,at least you did it,you will get there no matter how long it takes.I just sold my Treddie but only cos I got more confident running outside. It served me well for over a year.Im pretty sure mine was in KM but Im not sure if they all are.I would just say, keep going with it.I have learned so much about running in the last few months by just giving it a go and finding what works for me.I read lots and talk to other runners to ask advice. There is always something new to learn or try out.

    Hi everyone

This is my first post on the forum, I have been snooping but only just got up the courag to write. I have been running since July using BUPA 10km training plan. Wanted to lose a little weight and get some stamina. This has now erupted into doing a half marathon for charity in March (Silverstone Adidas) so its all good and I have lost a little weight. Was 12st 7lbs now I am 11.12ilbs and I managed my first 10km in 53.38 last Sunday is this ok for a 51 year old ex smoker??

Hi Ian, welcome to the thread, sorry it's been a coupla days - wasn't ignoring you, honest!! Well done on taking the plunge into running - I also have my first half mara in March next year. I'm impressed by your 10k time, regardless of age - great going image

I just had to pop back in to let you guys all know about my 'breakthrough' tonight - I managed a 3 miler with no walk breaks, ok so I was slower than a slow thing, but I think those of you who've been around on the thread a while will know just how much this means to me. It is HUGE!!! and I have a lot more confidence that I have a pretty good chance of getting round the HM course in March - I may be keeping the sweeper company but I will definitely do it!!

Hi all after managing my first 10km last Sunday I came down with a cold which upset my running this week. I managed to go out today and did 30 minutes without stopping but the infection has certainly sapped my stamina abit. I have been trying really hard not to be too competitive with myself as its disappointing when I miss targets but I just cannot help myself, is this a male thing? Or do the ladies suffer from self competition as well? Oh and I have not managed to put the devil chocolate behind me!!!

Hi, I'm 40 years old, about 5 stone overweight and have done ZERO physical exercise since I figured out how to get out of PE classes at high school... Think I had a bright idea to take up jogging about 15 years ago and had such pain in my knees, ankles and shins after 50 yards, I never tried again...

A couple of weeks ago, I volunteered to help at a charity ultra trail race up in the Highlands.  And as I stood at my checkpoint, watching these crazy people run through, smiley and chatty, like they hadn't just run nearly 20 miles up and down hills, through snow and ice, a little voice in the back of my head said "bugger this, I'm sick of saying I can't".

Feeling incredibly stupid, I decided to go to a specialist running shop and ask for some advice (maybe if I got some really "bouncy" shoes, my legs wouldn't hurt so much? that sort of thing).  Well, the lady made me walk up and down in my socks, told me exactly where things hurt when I walk (without prompting) and why (not only do my feet roll inwards, but I start by landing on the inside of my foot), and fetched lots of pairs of shoes for me to try on.  When I found a pair that felt "right" walking in the shop, she opened the door and said "right lets see you jog down the road and back".  Umm, I wasn't planning on doing any public running for a very long time (!) but that wasn't cutting any ice and I found myself running 100 yards out and back .... and nothing hurt!

So far, I have been out for a couple of walk/run sessions (still in the dark where not too many people can see me).  The "run" bits have all been pretty short (50-100 yards) but they're getting fractionally longer, and the 30 minute session is covering fractionally more distance.

Do I have any particular goals?  No.  Just being able to stop saying "I can't run" and start saying "I can run a bit" will do for now.  When I get to that point, I'll think about the next one.

  • Options
Hi Julie, well done you for taking that first step. You've certainly gone the right way about it, getting your gait analysed and the right shoes for the way you run is so important. And you sound like you're being really sensible about it, just keep doing what you're doing, don't worry about speed, focus on running longer rather than faster for now. My breakthrough 3 miler on Friday was at an average 14:27 min per mile pace - barely faster than my fast walking pace, but it was running!!
btw, I'm also around 5 stone overweight and until recently would only run on my treadmill, and have just started venturing outside (after dark), although I do go to a running club on Tuesdays where I go out with a run/walk beginners group.

Well ickle chucky eggs i managed my 6m today &  I'm not ashamed to say it was a grooler. i might have scared a few dog walkers with my contorted face  & my hunched back (was trying to get into the crawling position) but the pain is a distant memory after a boiling bath.  Bring on 7m!!!! IR22 my time was 1.03 which is good going & a surprise to me seeing that I'm going for distance not speed  but yep I'm a begger for pushing my own targets.  I grew up competing in dance competitions & omg it was ugly so alas my friendly rivalry is done & dusted but hey if your willing to wager a fiver!  Ha Ha! Joking!  image

Welcome Julie 2010 it took me a while to pluck up courage to go to a specialist shop incase they sent me packing to the hosp but they didn't & im better for it so stick in, little & often & keep us informed there's always someone hanging around to welcome you.

Eckytump, ill be most impressed if you make it out today after a christening, come on whats your next venture?
