    Afternoon all

Well got out for the run today started outside the gym again and did the 3.38 mile route again then in to the gym for a swim shine stills seems to be holding up

Had a rest day yesterday the man came and had a look at the tree and quoted me £240 to cut the tree right back to the fence and get rid of all the waste

    Hi losers,

Aha - more or less the same reasons I'm doing it!

WM - thermocouple might be what he was talking about - in which case they're quite easily fixed apparently.  Just hope he can do it before too long.  OH was out tonight and it look me over half an hour to light the fire!  I am likewise impressed at your self-control.

Yersinia - hope your skin is better soon, winter is just hard all round really.  Julia I remember those posts from last year too!

Toby - good to hear the running is still gonig well.  That sounds like quite a reasonable price for the tree if it's a fairish size.  We had one cut down/back last year that cost a similar amount.

I did a swim this evening, it was all going really well until shortly before the end when I got terrible calf cramps again, so much so that I could hardly kick.  It felt like my ankles had totally fused up and my feet wouldn't move easily as normal.   Very strange.  What troubles me about it is that it never happens when I swim first thing or at lunch time - although when I go at lunch times I do a shorter session.  I made sure i was well hydrated before going and had a light snack but it didn't seem to amke any difference.

I didn't have time to weigh in this morning - early start at work so will do it tomorrow morning.

How far / fast do you swim, puffin? Do you vary your stroke at all, or do any stretches?

Just found an article about cramping. Don't know whether any of it applies to you.

I swam today too. It felt very smooth and almost zenlike today for some reason.

I wore a balaclava, buff, hat and plain sports glasses on my ride to the pool, and experimented with some  savlony-type cream and aqueous calamine on my skin. It seems a bit better. I feel a bit foolish so muffled up, when my body doesn't even feel cold, but my skin's really been problematic in this weather. Sometimes my first conscious thought in the morning is "ow, my face feels tight."

@Lix - 52lb? Wow, that's an impressive amount to lose. How long did it take?

  • Options
Yersinia - have you tried any organic oils for the skin on your face? Neals Yard do a lovely rose-based face serum - pricey for £20 for a 50 ml bottle but well worth it - and great as a night nourishing cream.  They will also custom-make a face oil for you.
  • Options

No, over the years I have found which moisturisers work well for me - in the summer I swap to cheapo basic stuff, and then go back to my preferred, more expensive stuff in winter. It's only my face that's really sore, so price is only a minor issue, really. A small pot will last quite a while.

Most years, I only have a problem if it's really bitter, or if I'm outside a lot, but this year, my skin seems bad a lot earlier in the year than I'd normally have a problem, so I suspect it relates to my dieting, so it might be hard to get the balance right.

I used to use a nourishing face mask that soothed my skin quite a bit, but it isn't sold any more. In fact, nearly all the masks sold seem to be 'purifying' which translates as 'drying' for me.

I have also made homemade ones before. Not so convenient, and a bit messy, but I think I might try that again.

Morning losers, 1lb lost this morning image

Zara yes, agreed, Nigella is worse. Did you see her making nutty and salty choc bars earlier this week? Mr T was definitely dribbling. Hopefully at the food and not at Nigella image . Neals Yard is a site i always mean to look at, often see them in magazines, i'll head off after this post...

    Waves to Toby

Crikey Puffin, hope your legs and feet are ok after yesterdays swim oooerr.

Yersinia hope your face is feeling better today, i'm sorry but i chuckled at your disguise, made me think of the invisible woman! Have you cut right down on the amount of fat you eat only i have a feeling i may have read that it stresses skin nails and hair out if you go too low fat? Olive oil, rapeseed oil, avocado and all that?

Kete i think my computer may be doing weird things, the like took me to Ugg boots not the christmas smilies that it looked like?

JT - your computer didn't do anything wierd. Kete Kete is a spammer and the link is to a website selling Ugg boots not to any xmas pictures. The same thing has been posted on a number of other threads and I have reported this post/user to the mods!

Spammers are scum <spits> If male, they should be hung up by their b***s .. if female, they should be hung up by their t**s <rant over>

Now off to have a proper read back ..

    Morning everyone,

Yersinia - sorry to hear your skin is still taking a hammering with this weather and it was only 100g off this week.

JT - well done for the 5 miler in the pouring rain .. you is well 'ard! image

Zara - thanks for the pat on the back - I was impressed with my restraint as well! BTW I'll never get to try one of Nigella's cake recipes because I can't stand the woman. I hate the way she trys to be suggestive for the camera - it just makes me laugh as I switch off. The Sophie Dahl programmes made me cringe as well. Actually not even the programmes - the trailers were enough to put me off. What's wrong with just showing people how to cook things these days without all the c**p that goes with it? The only time I have seen any of Nigella's programme was when Harry Hill was taking the p**s out of her.

God - I sound like a right grumpy old sod this morning - sorry peeps, I'll be back to normal soon enough.

Lix - hello and welcome along.

Toby - well done re the 3.4 ml run and swim. There must be a tree-fellers cartel going on - £240 was what I paid for my tree to be felled and taken away (though I did keep some small trunks back for logs for the fire).

Puffin - as you may have guessed, I was getting quite familiar with my boiler before it was replaced. The thermocouple went a few times - when its knackered the signal doesn't get through to the boiler to switch on regardles of how cold it is getting in the house. Sorry to hear about the cramps when swimming.

I managed to give my shed a coat of creocote yesterday afternoon after work. Looking out of the window at the rain now I'm glad I used that window of opportunity when the sun was shining. I'm not saying it needed doing but you could see the creocote dissapearing into the wood as I brushed it on.

Skin not so angry today. I suspect it is to do with fat reduction - it's been worse in the recent cold spells than it was at New Year, walking in the Lake District in the middle of the infamous big freeze, so it must be more than just cold.

I have started to take a Linseed / Omega supplement, and a multivitamin. I drink plenty, I think, partly because of the old diet trick of having a drink when you start to feel hungry. I'm getting masses of fruit and veg, and I would have thought I get enough protein, too. The main things I've cut down would be starches, fats and processed sugars.

As for Nigella - her choc fudge cake is our most usual cake for a base for birthday cake, which are normally funkily decorated, but I've never watched her show. My brother-in-law is a fan, but even he says that in the latest series she seems to have gone rather over the top on the gastro-porn front.

    Hi All,

Finally lost some weight! *doing lap of honour around lounge*

Not a massive amount but enough to have not been the big wee I had before I went to weigh in. image

I ran 6m in the dark in a hurricane this morning. Living in The Lakes (almost!) has its definite disadvantages. I was soaked through and from 3-miles I couldn't see... I was certainly awake when I got back.

    Hope you're all well image

    wow -all very motivated hereimage

I am struggling to even get out and lungs are being a little unkind at the moment. Trying to take much reduced role in next coasters venture so I wont end up comfort eating and smoking too much. Doc says I gotta exercise and de- stress.

I eat pretty well but too much lately.

Jacket had gone when i got to the shopimage

    Afternoon losers

Weighed today first thing when i got out of bed this afternoon and was 12st 12lbs that’s another 2lb loss this week but more importantly puts me under the 13st mark so it now feels like i am getting some were

We too have the wind and the rain so i my well venture over the gym for a swim later if not it will be into the garage but i have now sat here so long reading and posting that i may not have time to ether

Daughters coming home for the weekend to help start to put up our Christmas decorations i know sad but because of work and with the amount that we put up each year it takes us at least 4 weekends to get them up we did try to do it all in one day one year but it just killed us so we decided to spread it out

Stu sorry about the jacket yes stress can be a killer never had a gray hair on my head until i too the supervisors job on now i have lovely hi- lights

Gazagril i hope you never got as socked on your lap of honour as you did on your run fair play to you for even going out in that this morning

Yersinia glad to read your skin isn’t as bad today i can’t even start to imagine how uncomfortable it must be

Mel yes you do sound like a grumpy old man but spam dose get on your nerves i tried the link on another thread and it does take you to some Christmas pictures looking back now i can’t see the post so they may well have removed it now any way

Julia T well done on the loss another one down

    Hi all,

Yersinia - thanks for that link, it's very useful and could be the answer to my troubles, I do have very inflexible ankles generallythat are prome to injury and it does feel like they tighten up when I get the cramps.  I have also been increasing the amount of crawl I swim on my long sessions and cutting out any breaststroke laps over recent weeks so perhaps I need to take it a little slower and not try to end with 4 x 50m sprints!!  Hope the supplements you're taking are helping your skin.

WM - know what you mean about Nigella and Sophie Dahl, can't watch either of them without cringing!  And I normally love cooking programmes!

Gazegirl and Toby - well done on your weight loss this week!  imageimage

Toby - wow, you much have some decoration display!!

The very good news from me is that the boiler is fixed for now!  But it does need to be replaced so I'll have to start saving....

The bad news is I weighed in this morning and have not lost a pound.image

Tonight's session is a 60 min negative split out and back run, should be easy to do just by running the first half into the wind!  I was hoping it would ease off but it doesn't seem to be happening.

well done on the weight loss Tobyimage Wish I could get under 14 stone at the moimage

Sorry about your lack of weightloss Puffin but you may still look thinner. I ten to remain the same for a bit but lose inches when on a good run.

  • Options
I wonder if something as simple as bunging in a couple of lengths of breaststroke every so often would help, Puffin? Just to break the repetitive nature of the movements.
  • Options

Gazagirl - if I had that kind of motivation, I would lose weight at three times the rate I am losing it now! good on you! I got up earlish this morning to go to yoga, but only because I knew it was being held somewhere dry and warm .image

Puffin1 - great to hear your house is warm again.

Toby3 - ok, now I am really curious - 4 weekends putting up christmas decorations?image

Stu - I have to say stress makes it way more difficult to lose weight. After years of trying to lose weight while coping with stress, I gave up my very stressful job 6 months ago and it made a *huge* difference to my health. Plus I have found a job that I actually enjoy In hindsight, I was glad I chose my health (somewhere higher) over my career - not an option for everyone of course.

Julia T - I thought the nutty and salty bars were a bit of a strange combination ( I can't remember exactly what, but there was a unusual mix of ingredients), but then I thought that of the peanut butter cheese cake before I tried the recipie. Now if Mr. T was drooling over bars or Nigella.........imageimageimage Hope you got to Neals yard. Places like Neals yard are my achilles heel, I always  end up buying stuff because it makes me *feel* good - never mind if it works or not, haha. Using this technique, I have occasionally stumbled upon things that work  - I think the rose serum is one of them.L'occitane is soon opening around the corner.....!

wtnmel and yersinia - I agree, I think Nigella's flirting with the camera is particularly overt  this series. I have had several of my friends comment on it as well. I wonder if the producers have convinced her that is is the best way to sell her show  - its a shame, really, as I like the simplicity of her recipies.

  • Options
Yersinia - that may be worth a try, I have been trying to change from mixing crawl with breaststroke but now think that I've been making the change too quickly.  I can do a short session all crawl but that doesn't mean I can do the same over a longer distance yet!
  • Options

Yeah, I mostly do crawl too - good upper body workout! But I think you can work and stretch muscles in a more balanced way if you throw in some other strokes for variety.

That said, I have in mind to do a long session entirely in crawl to get a baseline of how long I can comfortably keep going at a "long slow swim"-type pace.

    Morning all

Zara this is how we split the decoration down

weekend 1 one half of the living room or what would have been the back room if it wasn’t knocked through this includes at the last count 86 ceiling decorations lights of very us types  and the tree and about 10 or 11 musical things from reindeer to father Christmas and several fibber optic things and other thing to many to mention

Weekend 2 the other half of the living room it also gets ceiling decorations but not so many as it almost takes a hammer to get the drawing pins in the ceiling yet another Christmas tree and one 4 foot dancing reindeer and one 4 foot dancing snowman lights and a 2mfoot high musical snow globe and again several fibber optic things

Weekend 3 hallway down stairs and the stair way plus the porch

Weekend 4 outside of the house front and back and the up to the forest tree commission to choose a real Christmas tree to stand outside next to the front door

Morning all, off out for a blowy run in a little while, don't know how far, i'll see where the wind takes me!

Gazagirl well done on the weight loss. Has anyone else been sad enough to weigh before and after their ablutions just out of curiosity to see how much all these things weigh? Or was that too much information?? eek sorry!

Shame about the jacket Stu, it was obviously not meant to be, there is something better out there for you. By the way, what is the coasters? I'm probably being thick...

Hurrah at the boiler Puffin but image at the lack of weight loss. But are you losing inches? Is it worth measuring yourself and using that as another indicator?

Yersinia hope your skin is better today, mine is going to hate me in a while with this wind!

Zara i had a look on the website for Neals Yard and the serums look lovely. So much choice though! I'm looking at the anti-ageing range at the moment... image

Toby your house must be one of those where people drive out to see it? Do you get on the news? Makes us look very plain and boring image

    Morning everyone,

Back to normal for me today - not grumpy! image No change for me this week weight-wise - weighed myself last night and I was still 95.2 <210lb>  image

Yersinia - Nigella's gastro-porn is what Harry Hill pokes fun at .. he does a top 10 countdown of her double-entendres.

Gazagirl - now have this image of you running around your lounge in a blurrr .. was it a PB? Well done re the 6ml run.

Stu - I find running de-stresses me a treat - shame about the (lack of) jacket at the shop. I'm trying to get under 15st!! image

Toby - well done re losing 2lb image  Four weekends to put up xmas decs! That many decorations and lights sounds a bit OTT and would drive me mad! image

Puffin - the only cookery programmes I've been able to watch with Mrs Wm are Nigel Slater and Jamie Oliver .. both just your basic "this is what I'm cooking - this is how I'm cooking it" type of programme with no frills or playing to the camera. Good news re the boiler being fixed - bad news you need a new 'un. Welcome to the stayed-the-same club.

Zara - my long-term plan is to move from IT support (stressful, long drive to office) to being a massage therapist (more relaxing, work locally). I'm already qualified but once I'm settled in at Mrs Wm's properly I need to start doing it evenings/weekends and build up my clientele.

JT - yes, took much info! image But since you ask - not before and after but always after! image In case Stu doesn't pop back before me .. Coasters was the run around the coast of Britain that Stu organised.

I had a good run yesterday after work (into town, out and back in the park then back from town). It was just under 5ml (4.89) which I did in 52:42 (10:50 m/m). I was in a determined mood and didn't stop on the uphill parts so coupled with the fact it was windy I was well pleased.

Julia T - I don't have a set of scales in my house as I would become utterly obsessed and do exactly as you have described!

I go to an organised weigh-in at a group. Only mildly humiliating but if I'm paying £4.95 to get weighed then I'm going to bloody diet. image

    Hello again, losers!

Congrats on the good run, Mel, and on the windy run, Julia.

Re: Nigella - Brother-in-Law has pretty wide-ranging tastes in women, but I think he enjoyed Nigella much more when her voluptuousness and suggestiveness were almost incidental. It seems to have got to the point where it's self-parody, and rather cringe-inducing.

I used to have a slight Crush Of Shame on Gordon Ramsay, but I'm over it now. I'd still like to go to one of his restaurants though.

My skin seems a bit better now. I've consciously slightly increased the fat level in my diet. I don't think it's soon enough for that to have had an effect, but I'm hoping it will help over the longer-term.

  • Options

    Hey all,

Yersinia - I'm mainly doing the swimming to get into Tri next year so I'm focusing as much as possible on crawl, but possibly shoudl include other strokes as recovery or for variety.  I have considered structuring my swimming like running so incorporating long slow as well as the faster repititions.

I too have thought Gordon Ramsay was a bit of all right in the past, but recently he's jsut become a bit of a caricature of himself and I've gone off him - bit like Nigella I guess!

Julia - hope the wind blew you back home again too!  I have been measuring inches but I may give it a go to see if there's any difference.  My trouble is I'm trying to lose the last stone I want to but after losing lots of weight last year have lost a bit of motivation and do eat too many bad things.

WM - well done on the run, the wind last night made some bits of my run feel like I was standing still!

Have been out for my lunchtime swim today, shorter session so no issues with cramps.  I'm also planning to do 5 miles easy after work - and the wind has eased off so I may not get blown around so much today!!

  • Options

Yeah, I want to do a tri in the spring too, which is an additional reason to concentrate on crawl. But I'm thinking of a pool-based sprint, so it's only a 400m swim. So I think a few lengths of breaststroke within my regular sessions shouldn't affect that.

So far, I've just been doing as the mood takes me, but I'm thinking of trying some more structured sessions.

  • Options

hi everyone, I'm crashing your thread as for the first time I am going to regularly track my weight...I've always been up and down (long term comes from doing a sport where I had to get down to a minimum weight for comps, having a rather healthy appetite and inconsistent training!) short term I've just lost my mum and have been comfort eating a bit too much...I've just signed up for a half mara in March and am doing a sprint tri in June  and reckoned it was as good a time as any to record my weight...might try and get the old tape measure out too for inch motivation! oh...and I'm a bridesmaid in October and have 8 other weddings so photo shame is another motivator!

so my starting weight is 64.7kg (or 10.2 stones) here's to it dropping off right...??!!!

Katy welcome to are merry band sorry to read about your mum

went for my usual run last night and WOW it was hard!!!! The first part of my run is a steady uphill 3/4 mile, INTO the incredibly strong wind we had last night, then a right turn into another steady uphill 1 mile, INTO the wind again????!!!!!! I walked the rest as I was sooooooooooo tired. lol. I opted to go play badminton with the wife and her cousins for an hour after that. Needless to say, I'm hurting today. lol. Enjoyed it though.

I'm on nights over the weekend so i'm just going to concentrate on eating correctly over the next three days, might do half hour of situps/press ups/squats etc, etc if i feel up to it,  before extending my run to around 3/3.5 milkes on Monday.

Thanks toby...and I've just notice wtnmel lurking in here!!

we'll have to be careful there's not a mass influx of inspire-ites!

quick question....what's peoples thoughts on milk in tea and coffee?! I'm a bit of a sucker for a milky coffee and tes periodically through the day, and keep being told if I cut those out/down (I probs have 3-5 a day depending on how good or bad it's going!) i'd lose weight?! I just can't imagine that i'm having that many calories from milk in a mug of hot drink?! am i being naive?!
