Excellent IT fettling skills there Moof - "give it a whack!". I have the 910xt and mac combo. Works like a charm.

Happy birthday GM.  Vet40-45 is where it's at.

Hope the lurgies are subsiding for the infected.

Hit the field in the rain on Tuesday night (in shorts) for a fartlek session 10x45s @ 6:20 to 4:50 pace - swim and bike yesterday and today's session was a jaunty run in Leicester. Took son #3 there for a uni interview so headed out and encountered these weird Tarmac based passageways with mechanical monsters zooming up and down them. I had to keep STOPPING to wait for a gap to cross. How uncivilised. Anyway, managed to find a trail/ path along a river and splashed along it for 8miles including a block of 3@HMP - came out at 6:35ave.

    Plan is on target image

oh, and had my hip xray taken yesterday - results in a week or two

Slokey-How are you finding the 910, reliable?

I think it's pretty similar to the 305 but hopefully not as temperamental. OTHERWISE IT'LL BE GETTING THE PC TREATMENT!!!

The buttons are a little fiddly and I preferred the green screen to the blue as my ageing eyes struggle to see without contacts.

I may even go for a swim with it next week to see if it recognizes my doggy paddle.

It's a big improvement on my rather battered 405 which had an irritating touch sensitive bezel. Plus I've got it hooked up to a bike cadence sensor and have used it for swimming (indoor only so far as you'd probably guess but looking forward to testing it in open water) - it has missed a couple of strokes on stroke counting a couple of times probably as a result of my ineffective and weedy stroke. This can skew the numbers a bit so I'm still learning how to interpret it to compare swim efforts and relative efficiency / technique.  Battery life is very good too.

    AR - solid PMP run.
    PMJ - excellent 20 miler.
SB - nice spin and pacey lunchtime run.
    Abbers - good brisk run.
GM - happy 40th - sorry to hear about the laptop. At least some of the data was salvaged. Prompted me to back up mine!
Moof - that's far from the first computer keyboard that's been on the receiving end of somebody's frustration!
Lorenzo - glad to hear the ankle held up in the pyramid session.
    Rich - good MP run.
SJ - nice fartlek in the field and good HMP session.
3 recovery miles @ 9:03 m/m. Looking forward to parkrun tomorrow.

Gerard - How was the beef bourguignon? Hope you had a good 40th. Bit of a nightmare about the laptop, with a bit of luck "your IT chaps" (do you work for the Secret Service?) can save most of the stuff on it.

Moof - Yet more evidence that running really does channel aggression and help with stress-related issues.

Rich - Nice MP effort - of course it feels like hard work: it's still a long way out from race day!

    PMJ - Excellent 20-miler.

  • Options

GM - Hope the beef was nice. Many Happy returns

PMJ - welcome back from illness, nice 20m

Lorenzo and Rich - nice sessions

My watch is playing up - am toying with a new one, not sure which one to go for, can we do some watch porn please? I am toying with the 620 - any experience out there?

On another note I am training as schedule (although I have totally confused myself what week I am on) but am feeling somewhat fatigued. Am turning one of the MLRs into a double recovery run to try and combat it, which is probably not ideal for Paris but looks good on Jantasticimage

It’s nice to read about the great sessions being run especially PMJ’s 20 miler.  We were the number 1 large team in Jantastic this morning when I check so well done everyone!

My ultra marathon training moves up a gear this weekend. I ran in to work this morning from my house which was almost 12.5 miles. I’m heading back home again at lunch time to bring up 25 miles for the day. Then I plan on starting a long run at about 5:30 tomorrow morning and covering 21 miles. I intend to run most of these miles around a 0.3 mile loop of a local practise golf fairway to ease the impact on the joints. The weather forecast is for very strong winds and rain for both runs so should be interesting! image

TR - tough to do those BAC sessions at any time, let alone pre-dawn! Find it very hard to run fast early.

Marrows - re. P&D. Just wondered how you were finding it, if it's your first time on the plan. It's obviously well followed by folks both on here and the sub-3 thread, but annecdotally, it can be a bit of a chore? What's your take on it? With Garmins, it's quicker to go direct to their customer support folks rather than back through a re-seller.

Moof - nice bit of anger management therapy in action there!

Lorenzo - glad the ankle is up to running. No hockey for me, but I will be in Cardiff for the 6 Nations tomorrow, supporting my 2nd claim team.

Rich - so far, so good. Need to avoid any injury/illness interruptions though. Good MP run from you.

AR, Moof, Lorenzo, etc. - the one thing I don't think Apple has got right is iTunes. For a company that prides itself on usability, I find that extremely awkward, un-intuitive and frustrating.

SJ - well done on getting your run done in the metropolis. Good luck to SJ Jr #3 and for your x-ray results.

Gul - any particular target for Parkrun?

Menn - keep at it! The legs are obviously soaking it all up.

BB - plenty of mental, as well as physical, fortitude required with that plan!

  • Options

Menn - I have a 620 which I picked up cheap in the US at an expo. Bit short for time now, but it is very light compared to the 610, the buttons are much better than 610 (dodgy lap button on 2 610's). I find the Recovery Advisor a bit of a gimmick, and the VO2 Estimate way out. Good to have cadence without needing a footpod. I really don't use many of the stats at the moment.

There have been a few gps issues: Garmin have just released some fixes for this. There are also one or two things available on the 610 that as yet are not available on the 620, but some software updates are coming out.

Getting a gps fix immediately is great, and uploading runs over wifi is so much better. Overall really good watch, although I may as well have gone for the 220. After a few early bugs being ironed out I have confidence in the 620 to the point that my 610 is now being sold.

Badbark 0.3M loop sounds like pure mental and physical endurance !

Many congratulations Gerard.  A NAS drive is brilliant addition to any home IT infrastructure - I use it for all backups and media files so I can stream video to my TV or audio files to my digital radio or transfer media to my ipod, laptop, netbook, tablet or smartphone.

That sounds like a plan Badbark.  A lot of ultra plans seem to use back-to-back runs, but when I've tried them I've got injured.  You seem to have injury-proofed yourself and it's a good idea to do the second one off-road.

I don't think I'll be buying a second Garmin ever.  The set-up is awful, satellite acquisition time too long, the user interface poor to awful, problems with recording and storing runs, poor server side solution. Fortunately it does the main job of saying how far and fast I'm going pretty well.  Suunto seems to be better.

Personally I don't like Apple because of professional jealousy. Linux is the way to go and I run that on my netbook - just has some limitations like ease of getting data to a NAS drive or connection to Garmin device

P&D had me doing an 11-miler this morniong with 6 @ HMP. This was always going to be a tough session, but to be honest it was a total car crash for me.

I warmed up for 4 kms and then got into it. I felt tired and sluggish from the start and even though I'd targetted a slightly slower pace than for last week's 5M @ HMP, I found myself struggling - 4:02, 4:08, 4:05, 4:08, 4:07 - and then I actually went the wrong way and started going up a hill (4:10), before almost getting run over, so took advantage of the enforced stop to get a breather and consider sacking the thing and heading home. Of course I decided to see the b**ger out so carried on, and found it not much easier than before -  4:02, 4:06, 4:07 and 4:01. Then I ran 4kms home for a total of 18kms (11:18M).

Av pace 4.05 (6:34mm) for the 10kms @ HMP, which is disappointing as I have a HM in two weeks and was looking at going sub 1:25, but what is more worrying is just how washed-out and gutless I felt, despite two days of easy riunning leading into today.

My left leg aches, and I hope it's not shin splints...

    Onwards and upwards.

Last night for me was a steady 8 miler. Pre-base phase, so nice and steady. Gradually increasing distances to test whether calf tightness returns.

I am a great fan of Garmin. I think that the stuff works well, has lots of features, and the UK support is nothing short of fantastic. We've got one item in the aeroplane, and are jealously eyeing another piece of kit. (OK, I admit, I prefer a TomTom satnav).

I suppose that reminds me, that I did test a TomTom Runner GPS Watch at Abingdon. It worked just fine, and addressed some of the 305's weaknesses, but clearly it wasn't aimed at being a 305 with bells on. You have to decide which features you really like, and what you can do without.

Ant - sounds like it was just one of those days, for whatever reason. You know you've had better sessions than that, so take confidence from toughing it out, and on to your next one. Hope the leg resolves itself.

Blisters - good to see you gradually upping the miles again. Talking to Garmin's UK support as I'm typing this, and very helpful they are too image  Mind you, I don't have anything to compare them to sports watch/GPS-wise.

Should have said earlier, but good luck to GM for this weekend's race, your first as a V40!

badbark, sounds mad but it is ultra so is probably right.

Mennania, as you say, sacking the MLR does help Jantastic but it bad for marathon. What plan are you on and why do you think you are fatigued?

As an aside PMJ, you're on fine form today on the Team GB thread! image

Good luck with your naked running Abbers (no Garmin!)

    Great 20 miler PMJ.

Happy 40th for yesterday Gerrard - welcome to the Vets age group. There's a lot on this thread in the over 40's! Good luck in your 10k on Sunday.

Moof - go for the Mac if you can afford it, they are brilliant. Just bought an iMac a few months ago to superseed my previous G5 mac, which was 6 years old (but kept randomly switching off with no warning). The new iMac is like sh1t off a shovel.

Badbark - your training looks like it's going to plan with the big miles. Good luck on the multiple 0.3 mile loops of the golf range - the challeneg will be keeping count. Do you have to wear plus 4's to blend in and maybe a pink Slazanger v-neck jumper?

Ant - a good pace nonetheless for your faster miles. You shouldn't base your whole fitness on just one bad (in your eyes) session. We all have rough days where we feel carp. Incidentally, I did the same sort of session last night too. Felt bad in the initial 2 mile warm up, managed to hold 6.18 pace for 2 miles, then it was tough for the next 3 miles 6,25, 6.28, 6.29. I think it was a combination of general fatigue/lots of late nights and maybe going too quick to start with?

Good luck to any racers this weekend.

SJ - good pace on the fields! Hope you enjoyed your run in Leicester. If you are up again I could give you some good routes to run (I live in Leicester). Could even go out together if there is time.

Thanks all for the b-day celebrations, the beef was magnificent Ant and the ilPasso wine I had was a perfect accompaniment. Feel a bit tired today!

Ant - I keep on the very good side of the IT chaps here and I'm glad I do.

Gul - Glad I prompted you!

Unable to recover anymore from my laptop than was initially, that will teach me. The car broke in December, the laptop in January, what next?

Bike it - I have no idea what that is but it sounds good, thanks for the recommendation.

Anyway no running for me now until Sunday. That's a challenge in itself as I love my Friday eve runs and Saturday afternoon one's too. Ah well could be worth it.

News Flash: I've had a good run finally with 7 miles with 6 at MP of 7:15.  All felt comfortable, just my lungs are still a bit tight after my recent illness.  I know it is not such a hard run, but after my recent spell of mediocrity, I'm happy to feel good and get closer to my best.  I've now got somewhere to start from

    Onward and upwards....

Ant: don't worry, my mile reps at HMP came out at about 6.45s instead of 6.30s last night and my HM is in 4 weeks.  I had been thinking 1.24 would be nice but we shall see how much speed comes back over the following weeks.  Today's target will simply be not to drown, judging by the rain currently hammering down in Brizzle!

Gerard -A NAS drive is basically an external hard drive that connects with your WiFi router/hub.  It is then accessible from any device on your WiFi network be it a laptop, smartphone, digital radio, TV, games console,.... Software can do an automatic backup of your PC data it. You can use it for bulk data storage as well.  I use this one:

Well done BI - PMP of 7:15s sounds good.

Jools - it'll take a little while to come back, but come back it will. Patience is a virtue and all that. Think your rain has now reached us a little further east...

KR - another who toughed out a hard session. All good investment. Hoping I'll get something back in the post from Garmin by the end of next week, so not too much naked running (ladies of the thread, avert your eyes).

Going to do my easy 5 tonight in the latest monsoon, then have tomorrow as my rest day for my day out in Cardiff, and then 18 early Sunday. Have good weekends all!

Abbers - thanks for the tip re Garmins.  P&D was fine and fun until I started mucking about with it and did too much fast running in the past week or two. I nailed 20 miles with 10 at target MP (4:30/km or 7:10/mile) a few weeks ago but found 11 w/ 6 at LT pace today a struggle and was way off the pace.  I am going to behave now and hope to regain some leg-beans.   I started the schedule with sore achilles tendons and their lots-of-slow-miles has let me build a base while letting them heal. Usually (barring sub-30% hematocrit..) i get injured before I get this knackered

Ant. I just switched my garmin from km to miles thinking that's what all the cool kids use and now you just whop me in the face with a big steaming pile of km splits! Hope you're feeling bouncier by HM time

    Great news BikeIt

Ant, you are experienced enough to know that down days come along every now and then. They all count though. It'll be interesting to see the effect of safety pins and a number when you race your HM.

Thanks KR, I did think of you and Martin as I was trotting round and wondered if you ever frequented the same area. Didn't think you'd be available on a Thursday afternoon though. I was on Aylestone Rd (I think) and along the river behind it. I did notice that the locals were quite friendly and smiled back when I said hello and even waited for me to pass at gates etc. Well done Leicester! Not sure my boy's interview went as well as it needed to so might not be down there again.

I've had a week of financial musings after having the house valued a few days ago. It would seem that the renovations we've made over the past few years have paid off handsomely. Debating whether to cash in and start again or to sit tight..... Spreadsheet-tastic.

I made a similar calculation 2 years ago Slokey.  I've also renovated my property from a dump to something we're all happy with. In the end, I decided to stay put and build a loft extension, which has added even more value.  In the end it was the stamp duty and moving costs that made me decide to stay put, although I've got 2 very young kids who take a lot of time, whereas yours are leaving home so less of an issue. Having said that, I'm looking at property development in SA - it seems tricky to get a work permit so I may have to do my own thing for a while.

good to hear from Badbark(ing) - 0.3 mile loops !!!!
Ant - chin up - some runs are just cr*p - you didn't bin it, so kudos due  . . .
    conversely, pleased Bike-It reports a pleasureable outing  . . .

may as well be the first with month's stats - rest day today concludes 222 miles for Jan, inc 20,20,16,21 on the Saturdays.   A reasonably solid start to the campaign, and almost time, as I stated a few weeks back, to review & decide on a Spring marathon. I reckon I'll enter Manchester, as Belfast is a month further on, and I don't believe I have the mental or physical resilience now to extend the buildup, so better to be a week or three underdone, than to risk cracking and a DNS.
The thing is, I'm slow anyway now, and any hard effort necessitates plenty of recovery; eg tues this week was 9.5 mile hillyfartlek/tempo/just try hard outing, and felt pretty good. Felt OK Wed just walking around, but when I went running later, goodness, the legs were just creaking and stiff as hell  . . .took around 3-4 miles to get going  . . .
Anyway, the goal is sub 3:30 (the OGITGFA for VLM) - if achieved then VLM 2015 will be my swansong for marathons, if not achieved, then Manchester will be the end.  3 and a half hours is plenty long enough to put one foot in front of the other (doffs cap to Poacher, BikeIT, Minni & others), and I don't envisage doing it much longer.
Time to maybe heed Noakes -
"It takes great insight and wisdom to realize that the glory days are past, and that a new perspective must be reached"
On the other hand, in "The Long Hard Road", Ron Hill states "my demise has been too rapid, and the purpose of my further training will be to decrease the downward slope of my performances", and concludes"there is no end - I will never cease running and competing"  . . . . .

(the only differences between me and Ron being insight, wisdom, and talent)  . .

that's enough - good running this weekend, all, and may the wind and rain be minimal . . . . .
