Riiiiiight! Kids starting to head back to school so will try have a massive read back to catch up on news in the next day or two.  And find out who I might be able to see IN PERSON at Abingdon.  Running news, I joined the local club finally, Guildford & Godalming Athletics Club.  This decision has not been taken lightly because they wear the most awful green nylon vest that will surely combust if within 10 metres of a naked flame.  I must not get photographed when racing for them.  I did their track session last night which was a weird one: 900m, 500m w/1 min recs; x 3 with 3 mins between sets.  I think a VO2 session?  Anyway, average pace came out at 5:35m/m which I assume is somewhere in between the efforts for the 900m and the 500m.

Now to walk the dog and get the boy to focus on some last minute school stuff...

Need to catch up with everyone as last week was crazy but thanks to all for the suggestions for stretches and simply to chill before the race. Took Sat/Sun off completely and really nailed the sore muscle with a trigger point ball. Finally got it released Sunday!

Monday ran the 25K. Was horrid conditions (75 degrees, 90+ humidity and full sun at the startimage). 1st 8 miles were a steady climb, then some more gentle rolling stuff, then climbs again in last few miles w/a "crazy hill w/a wicked turn" to end. Needless to say a challenging course. Ended up running pretty even pace (7:32 m/m) and ave HR of 168 (84%). Positives were I felt really comfortable the whole way round and was able to push through some of the late race fatigue and take the last 1/2 mile at 6:40 pace (probably left too much in the tank). I was a little disappointed I didn't have a faster clip, but I'm slowly learning not every race is a time trial. Just have to work w/the conditions on the day. Anyway, 15.56 miles at effort in heat w/hills should be good hay for the barn. My marathon is relatively flat and should be cool weather so hopefully this run will provide good perspective on race day.

Wore my Hokas and found a flaw. They don't drain! By the end, I had sweat squishing up out of the top of my shoes (granted we all looked like we had just climbed out of the pool). So they may be a bad idea on a rainy day or for a longer race in really hot/humid conditions.

Nice work from Birch this morning.

Well done to MsE on signing up for G&G AC. I'm convinced athletics/running clubs go out of their way to invest in the least attractive kit possible. Good pace in your track session though.

VTR, sounds like a good return in your 25k in tough conditions on a challenging course. Should give you a training boost ahead of your mara too.

    1500 splashed at lunch.

Our club kit is pretty ok,actually: see left image

Jools - my new club kit is pretty similar to yours but I don't think white is really my colour!

Abbers - agreed, if its your job to open then that becomes your role in the team. But its about bowling as a team I guess. You are probably swimming more than me at the mo.

MsE - look forward to crossing swords with you guys at various meetings over the course of the season. image The Lorenzo crew will be in the attractive magenta(?), white and blue of the mighty Dorking and Mole Valley AC. Is it just you or have you got the kids and MrE involved in the club as well?

VTr - I'm still trying to locate a shop that stocks Hokas so that I can try a pair on before getting the credit card out. Don't fancy taking a punt online on a new make of shoes

    Fife?

Yep! Not raced anything for them yet though.

    Evening all.

Been a while since I've been on here, but think it's time that I committed to doing another marathon.

Sorry to see so many with injuries and sitting on the bench.

Have noted many good performances and see that the thread may be changing from a nearly sub 3 thread to an ultra / Comrades one instead.

Any one got a copy of the latest event list?

    Hope to be around more.

    OGL.

Lorenzo - your 10k PB is much faster than mine, so it's probably nothing to worry about!
    Jools - satisfying club session.
Abbers - good luck to Ms A this morning.
Birch - Mrs GD has decided to come with me to Mablethorpe, but doesn't fancy setting off at silly o'clock in the morning, so we've booked somewhere to stay nearby the night before.
MsE - good luck with the new club.
VTr - great effort in poor conditions and a challenging course.
OGL - good to hear from you again - not sure where the lastest list is.
    Good visibility today, so 8 miles @ 7:21 m/m.

  • Options

OGL - good to see you back on here. What have you been up to recently?

Gul - I did a similar session to you this morning. 8.5 miles on a rolling (rather than hilly) route which ended up at 7:18 average pace. Pleased with that given it's still early days in the campaign.

Very much enjoying running without a watch or a Garmin with the exception of interval sessions.

  • Options

Good session MsE. I didn't know you were that quick!

Gul - what does visibility have to do with the distance/pace you run?

Lorenzo - I am NOT enjoying the lack of garmin.  grrr.  I wish they had better competitors.

  • Options

I can vouch for MsE's speed after she pulled away from me after about 20 miles at Abingdon a few years ago!

Marrows - What's the problem with your Garmin? Also, are you planning on doing the Thames Meander later this year? You're fairly close to Kingston aren't you?

  • Options

Jools - there are always honourable exceptions, of course! image

TR - I may be swimming more, but I bet it's slower! Cricket tour this weekend, starting tomorrow morning, although hopefully I won't have to play and can rest my leg some more. Jogging in a straight line seems OK, and I normally get out for a head-clearing run along the river Ex early on Saturday, so that may be an opportunity to see how things are running-wise.

Lorenzo & Gul - good steady/MP runs there.

Welcome back to OGL. Good to see you posting again.

Lit - what have you got lined up, race-wise?

Marrows - I've not tried any kind of sports/GPS watch other than Garmin. Don't know how Polar, Timex, etc. compare?

marrows  what is up with yours? I'm not too bothered with these things and would happily let you have mine for a fair sum. It's a 910XT in tip top condition and v useful for that odd triathlon one often finds one wants to do! Just let me know if you are desperate.

Lorenzo - you shall not catch the Green Goblins! image  When is your next race?

12@ 7:30m/m with some tempo stuff in there (9 ranging from 6:44-7:07 if you would believe what the Garmin says but I am deeply suspicious when the effort felt the same throughout).

Starting to read back: errrrrm, SJ, what ever happened to your dodgy hip?!  You are Ultramarathon Man!

Afternoon All, haven't been on much lately as I have been busy looking after my son and getting my stuff in order. I did see though that Lorenzo has got the green light for The Comrades! Nice one, I am sure you will enjoy the whole event and the experience.

Also hi to Bike it - good to hear from you. Hope the work comes to you. Have you ever been to a place called Somerset West? It's a very nice vibrant town about 50k outside Cape Town. If I could chose to live in the Cape it would be there.

VTR - Nice 25k there sounded tough so well done.

MsE - Congrats on joining the club even though the vest is not ideal!

Gul - Good continued training. Not too long now.

Marrows - a work colleague of mine uses a Suunto and rates it highly.

Recovery not going to plan here and was chided by the surgeon on Tuesday. Will be another couple of weeks I reckon so that would be 5 weeks of no running. Not long in the grand scheme of things but seems like an eternity to me.........

We all need a good chiding every now and then GM!

Poacher, having looked at the dates I think I'll have to plump for Frankfurt - a) because it fits better with half term and b) it gives me an extra week to train!

MsE, hip is still a big problem. Drugs and careful management are seeing me through at the moment. I have an appointment at a specialist hip replacement centre up here in the NW at the end of the month for a second opinion. I'm not expecting a different diagnosis but hoping for some sort of treatment plan that isnt just "come back when you can't walk and we'll cut you open and set about you with a saw and a mallet".

nothing to report here other than sick of work already after being back for 4 days working late every night with zero time to train image

  • Options

Oh, come on, MsE.  Play the game.  I thought we were mates.
12 miles at 7.30mm?  There's really no need for that sort of behaviour.

I'm just back from a 12 mile run.  It took me 2 hours.

Loving your "hay for the barn", VTrunner.

How long does it generally take for your 1500s in the pool, Abbers?

  • Options

TAR - no idea to be honest! I've been doing them as 10 x 150 off 20 secs recovery, but using the wall clock at the pool is inexact at best! It just keeps the CV work ticking over before I can get back to running again really.

  • Options

Gul - What's your target for Mablethorpe?

Lorenzo - Have been doing shorter stuff, mainly parkruns and the occasional 10K. 2013 and 2014 have been interesting times running wise, never been in top form and am trying to sort out various physical shortcomings and poor form issues.

Times are getting slower, but WAVA figures are getting better. I must be getting old.

Abbers - Cricket is not a sport that I understand.

MsE - You've got very fast, congratulations. What's the target?

GM - sympathise with your current situation, keep strong and keep in there. Five weeks is not long in the grand scheme of things, you'll come back with renewed vigour and determination.

SJ - your hip sounds not too good, what do they think is wrong?

TAR - what's the next race that you've paid for but wont be running?

Off for a run now, 6 miles tempo-hard effort-time trial, in an attempt to see what form I'm in for an up-coming 10K.

SJ - you sound like a subversive patient! Are you confident in the diagnosis and treatment plan?

TAR - I see you are doing Abingdon too!  Forgive me if, when we meet, I seem unable to shake the imagery of you pissing on a frozen lock to let yourself in after a morning run during an exceptionally cold winter.  image Good time on feet run today.

OGL - no target other than not get injured again!

That last comment makes me very, very sorry to be missing Abo. I hope it was lock as in door and nothing hair-related.

    Welcome back OGL

After a summer lull I am back in training. Bit late really as the Flanders Fields mara is 10 days away and the last LR was early June

Lorenzo have you found an hotel? If not, try Agoda which has some decent deals in Dbn.

That's one way to make a memorable entrance!

MsE, OGL, the diagnosis is certain: severe osteoarthritis (in my good hip), much worse in the bad one. GP was surprised that I could still walk with the level of damage and the surgeon says it's so bad that he'll operate (full replacement) as soon as I ask him to. But what do they know? It hasn't deteriorated in the past 9 months (symptoms wise at least) despite a trail marathon, a 50mile ultra, an ironman and a 35miler in that time - not to mention the supporting training.

I know I'm on borrowed time, I know I'll need the op eventually, I'd just like a view on whether there is anything else they can do to prolong the joint's life (stopping running is obviously the wrong answer).image

    VTR- good tough race

MSE- no injuries-that's an ambitious target alright !

Slokey-hopefully you can borrow a few more years yet .

meanwhile in other news , I jogged 3 mile image

In a funny way the ultra way of running (with shuffling and walking up hill) has probably helped in that you are not pounding fast miles out on roads and preserving the hip. I think you may have unwittingly found a way of prolonging the life of the hip by what you are doing!  I know glute and core work is meant to help in maintaining excellent form. Anything that stops impacting so much.  Anyway, am full of admiration for you.  We are fortunate in that we can get new hips these days!

Absolutely right MsE. The most damaging run I've done this year was a 5K on road at the end of a sprint tri. The vast majority (99 %) of my running this year has either been on treadmill, trail, fell or grass. Much nicer.
