  • NN you should listen to episode 121 of Marathon Talk the interview with Nell McAndrew in that she explains about upping the miles to 80+ a week and running twice a day interesting listening.
  • NP re aqua running ,i take it theres no impact on the foot when im doing this excercise?

Night Nurse- i think im going to have to get used to whatever crap is on tv during the day.image

Im keeping my spirits up and if ive had an injury in the past then i tend too stay away from the forums as it got a wee bit depressing knowing that i couldnt run.But this thread has been great for me in the past year and i would miss popping in from time to time to see how everyones doingimage

  • NP my schedule does have a couple of doubles a bit later on but I cant decide whether or not to try it maybe I will, I wondered how much difference it would actually make. I can see how much difference it made to Nell wow !! but she is another league altogether

YC excuse me but Jezza is not crap.image

    Hope the injury improves soon

  • No she is not in a diffrent league she just trained the correct way but you should start doing the doubles now and build them up in milage rather than jump in and not be able to do the second one or second set as they take a bit of getting used to.

YC no impact as you do it in the deep end so your feet don't touch the bottom of the pool. I first came across this on holiday a few years ago when a group of French runners did it every day in the pool.
  • Hate to disagree with NP, but Unless you're running more than 70 miles a week there's no need for doing doubles regularly- maybe once a week-? At lower mileages you're better off sticking to singles ( as a marathon runner- different for 5k specialist) and building endurance. At the moment I'm doing 3 double days at 85m and will peak at 4 doubles per week on around 110m
  • Sorry but disagree as you can also build your speed sessions around doubles that's the good thing you can recover with the shorter runs not every one can get out and do 100+ miles or even 7x10 mile runs a week.
  • As for speed sessions- not thinking about those until March!
  • This is something I have neglected in base training before but am adding more of this time.

I feel doing doubles is ok for 50+ miles a week and going into them easy such a one run a tempo one run recovery and building up the miles is the best way for example someone who has never done them before but runs 6 miles on a Tue and Thur could start by doing 2x4 mile runs building 5+4, 5+5, 6+5 ,6+6 that's how I first started and built to 7+7 so instead of doing a total of 12 miles for the two days they could build up to 28 now that's a big difference in a weeks running. I know you have gone further than that I wish I was young enough to or had the time to fit more in.image
  • Not exactly in my 20s either! As for time to run, that's all about priorities image

    There's always time imageimage

    Now for example image

No Pain wrote (see) I know you have gone further than that I wish I was young enough to or had the time to fit more in.image

NP that is exactly the conversation I had with my 31 year old son a few days ago, he has taken up running/ triathlons just this year and has made amazing progress, and easliy run 42 mins for a 10k training run,,,this time last year he couldn't keep with his old mum but last Fri he comfortably paced me over 9.5 miles at my marathon pace 8.20s, he was running backwards and doubling back half the time, so would thing he will improve so much more...Oh to be young !!

Jason that really is amazing mileage. What is you marathon time ?

NP how any miles do you do.What are your race times ?

Are you both running VLM ?

I will have no problem getting 55-65 miles done , even though I work nights and have done for 20 years I can fit plenty of miles in around shifts , As you say Jason there is always time, just means less day time telly image

off for 9 mile GA now...oh its raining what a surprise .image

  • NN- exactly! No soaps for me image as for marathon time, 2.49 at the moment but this was with tight hamstrings for 14m on an undulating course. Hoping to get under 2.45 in London
  • Marathon PB 2:58:18 done in VLM 2011, this year I suffered a stress fracture the week before VLM so didn't race. I ran Dublin in October with a girl who never ran a marathon before and got her round in 3:47. In 2011/12 my milage peaked in the high 80's low 90's. I am a Fire Officer who works strange shits and often sleepless nights as well as trying to fit in the training and I'm 51 years old. My training week starts on a Sunday with a long run followed by Monday swim/run or rest. Tuesday two sessions working on speed, Wednesday medium long run, Thursday two sessions, Friday swim/run rest. Saturday hill run. This week will total high 70's/low 80's. By increasing each of the sessions I build up the miles each year I have made slight changes to the plan the first major change was introducing the double days then adding the medium long run, these changes came about by reading a number of diffrent books but is based around P&D. This year I am adding more speed work having read the art of running faster which comes at things from a bit of a diffrent angle. No one way is the correct way I'm not an elite and I'm only racing myself and for me that's what it's all about. We all have to find what works for us I know my plan will get me in sub 3 hour shape. I love the support and differences of opinions and training plans we each have and we all learn from each other image
  • Kettlebells are harder than I thought they would be............so much harder than dumbells but then no pain no gainimage Followed it up with 12km on treadie as hard ice plus rain outdoors. The roads were really bad last night when walking the dog and gritters haven't been out yet?? So treadie the safer option.image

As for time to run, Right now I am finding it really hard?? The dark mornings and evenings plus chauffering children around, work commitments is making it a constant juggling act. In the summer everything seems so much easier - probably cos I can run at anytime of the day as its practically always daylight!!

Fiona - thanks and well done on the 4m recovery / 7m fartlek double

NN - thanks, nice 12 miler

NP - great running. Interesting to see your schedule...

jason well done on the 2 recoveries

YC glad you're keeping your chin upimage

OH nice kayaking. Good luck in the gales!

Kaz nice 8 miler. Take care you don't put your shoulder out with those kettlebells...

HM hope you're not flooded. Still tipping it down here...

    ---

7.4m this morning. Soaked but happy as the HR was 2% lower than yesterday, so heading in the right direction at last...

  • kaz- kettlebells?image Good luckimage

NP- Interesting schedule- and you are spot on- there is no one wayimage

Tek- well done on the soggy run.

I just did a 6.5m recovery run on the flat. Only to find car battery was dead and then ran a hilly 2.8m home....imageimage

  • OH/kaz hope the weather is better with you, snow here today but not bad.

Hope the return to work is not too traumatic HM4 and that you get out later.

YC when injured last year I went into a cloud of gloom and mostly stayed away from the thread but on reflection probably would have helped to stick around. image

NN I have just started doing doubles (as recommended by NP!) and I am really enjoying it. The P of P & D guy now says that's the one thing he'd change in his book. For more mature runners (us!!) less chance of injury splitting mid week longer runs even when mileage is low - I found that on a US website. image Each to their own tho' and what works for them.

Good news on the HR Teknik.

Oh dear jason, hope you can get it charged/a replacement!

My first of today's runs, a recovery 4m. What I like about this 2 runs lark is that I can fit in more sessions. I used to get injured with 2 runs a day as I just lobbed in another run but now I split my day's mileage so recovery in morning and quality later in the day. Then I can just slowly increase it. image

I tried watching TV last night but got bored so back to the book. I also tried lighting a fire (not thro' boredom, I have an open fire and this was my first attempt in 2 years!!) but gave up after several attempts. Bet you wish there were more like me around NP! image

    F

  • Just over 6 miles fartleks recovery run laterimage

Kaz  it's dark o'clock time of the year again, well done on the Kettlebells i'm sure you will get used to them, been doing a few reps with the one I have to strengthen the wrist...... Nice treadmill run.

Teknik well done on your run glad your HR is heading in the right direction.

Jason well done on your 9 mile run hope you get the car sorted.

  • Fiona cross post well done on your first run of the day can I ask if you had your chimney cleaned? as you will be suprised at the number of chimney fires we get due to birds that have built nests in chimneys image or they havnt been cleaned since the last time they where used.

Well into my new book on brain training for runners.....

  • Nice fartlek - like 2 sessions in one running hard up the hills!

Actually as the folk who built the house never had a fire at all I didn't think I'd need the chimney cleaned but of course there are birds on it in the summer! Never thought of that, thanks. image

    F

  • Fiona- its lovely and bright here but very slippy underfeet this side of the Island, don't know about the otherisde OH? Kirkwall side always seems to see more gritters than we do?!?!image

Fiona - I opened up my chimney last year after it being closed for years prior to me buying the house. I thought the same, but thankfully my BF(who is also a Fireman) pointed me in the right direction of getting the chimney swept.

I think I may try a run this afternoon once things improve outdoors. I do like doubles as I find, that I can increase mileage easier and that two shorter runs are easier to fit in than one longer if I am busy.

  • Mrs JD's car and my jump leads sorted the car image

Bought a 5kg medicine ball in the sales. Now I have got sore abs! image
  • Jason that's good news about the car, enjoy your medicine ballimage
  • Found some exercises for the med ball on YouTube . Ouch!
  • Gym session done with trainer, lots of resistance, core and leg strength work. Time to recover now before long run in couple of days
  • Running has taken a bit of a hit for me, for one reason or another. All I've really managed recently are a couple of woeful parkruns (21.30&21.50). I got signed up for Loch Ness last week, so that's my mara for next year.

  • SM6- good to get a race entry in- a great motivatorimage

4m to round off the day hereimage

  • SM6 nice.

    MG1 nice Gym session.

Jason another great days training for you, miles in the bank.

Nice recovery 6 miles for me done and dusted image

    Tek,

It's been horrible this morning, especially on a dark drive to work this morning with 1 headlight out and wipers having to be on double speed.

    -----------

    Well done on everyone's training.

  • Hi everyone, hope you had a good christmas.

First run since christmas eve today. Missus got me a 610 so decided to go 4 miles and have a play with the HRM.

Started with 2 miles easy at 8m/m as a warm up then battered out 2 miles averaging 6:45m/m, above what i normally do as a tempo pace at 7m/m. Averaged 130bpm on the warm up, then 140bpm on mile 1 and 179bpm on mile 2 which was a slight up hill the full length. Max heart rate ended up 188bpm. Didnt feel the benefit of the run like i normal do but was good to mess about with the new toy image
