If it helps, in the confirmation email I received when entering on line it said:-
"Thank you for entering the adidas Flora London Half Marathon at Silverstone on March 13th. We will start sending out Entry packs roughly 3.5 weeks before the race"
Ive just entered today! My first half! What have I let myself in for. Only been running seriously for about 4 months but have done about a dozen 10K's of varying levels. Hoping for about 2 hours! Am i likely to be running with the 'sweeper'???? Quite excited though, better get some training in. Can anyone suggest appropriate training for the next 3 weeks please?
Next 3 weeks.... Hard to say on the basis of what you've given!
I can give some very good advice for the week before - do nothing!! (although others will disagree)
Its probably worth getting a 10-13mile run in this week. 8-10 the following. And continue your 'normal' running around that. Obviously with three weeks to go there is not a lot you can do!
If you plan to finish in 2 hours you won't be near the back!
As Ben says, it's a bit late in the day to think about embarking on a special plan. But if you've been regularly running 10Ks you're halfway there. I would definitely try to push the boat a bit - at least to 10 miles. If you can run 10 miles in training then you can do 13 in a race. So why not try 10 miles this weekend and again next weekend, then 7 or 8 the one before? During the week you just need to keep getting out there to sharpen your fitness a bit with shorter runs of 4 or 5 miles, perhaps on Tues, Wed, Thurs. Have Monday and Friday as rest days.
If you just treat it as a good new experience rather than a race with a big target, you'll be fine. There will be a lot of runners finishing in 2:30 - 3:00 so you'll not be left behind.
Ok chaps thanks for the advice. Doing a 10K on Sunday and then another the following Sunday, so will try a couple of longer ones duirng the week - trouble is our club only normally run for 6-8 miles during the week! As you say I have left it a bit late in the day! Did my first race on 1st January - a quarter marathon that took 50 mins, so aiming on 2 hours - maybe its mind over matter in this case!!! As long as I'm notrunning with the sweeper (if there is one at Silverstone)? I'll be happy. Expect the atmosphere is good , maybe that will keep me going!!!
Ben Smyth - Ok will try the 2 lap thing but I am crap at running by myself (the reason why I joined the club!) I keep stopping as I have no-one to keep me going! Basically I think I just left it too late in the day! More months preparation required I think!!
Bensmyth, why don't you try and engage another runner in conversation and keep up with them, last year I ran a few miles with a very nice chap, never got his name but it helped me along. I'll probably be near the sweeper with you anyway :-)
just been reading through this thread, got some useful stuff thanks! I've just entered as I didn't make it to my planned FLM prep race this weekend (Bungay 20k - snow difficulties!). I'm looking at 2.5 hours so all you 2hour lot don't need to worry about being with the sweeper
I did my long run of 13 miles today. It took me 3 hours! That said it was VERY hilly so Im hoping on the flat i will be faster. Going to do next weeks long run on the flat and time it. Ive not heard anything about race packs yet either
Well done Jenny. You'll find Silverstone very flat by comparison, and anyway, most of us always run much faster in a race than in training. Don't know why, but we do....
I should add 20 mins of my 3 hours was playing good samaritan to a dog and its owner... dog decided to run with me would be run... including playing dodge the HGVs.. so i stopped and granned it and rang the owner who was very grateful and a fellow marathoner! so maybe Im not deathly slow after all
