3 hours ago I logged onto the RW forum and went into injury to search for a piriformis thread, opened up Douglas' thread and sat riveted for hours, hoping in the earlier pages that all would be OK and then dreading reading the latter for the inevitable news.
Doug, you were a star, you inspired and helped many people. God bless you.
Added a little to the fundraising. Hope Rome treats you kindly!
Jim - I wonder if it's worth starting another thread. Prehaps in "General" with a link to this one. People who followed his story through this thread might not be checking in here anymore?
I also agree with Ferdy's point - I only discovered the additional posts on this thread by chance a couple of days ago. I'm sure there'll be loads who'll want to donate.
sorry guys - I have to disagree with you here.....
it should be Douglas's friends and family who should decide what exposure this thread - and the donation page - has, not the general forum...
although many of us have followed his trials and tribulations, it's his friends & family who should decide how he is remembered on this forum as they came through strongly for him in his final days and no doubt helped ease his way onwards and are ensuring that he has a fitting tribute at the Rome Marathon
if RW want to do something on their homepage after consulting with them - I'll go along with that - but please don't try to make decisions for someone that most of us didn't know bar of his posts here and as much as we would perhaps like to support the fundraising
FB - that's the point that was holding me back. I thought it should be up to Douglas's family/friends to start a new thread if they feel it's right. My concern was that I almost missed it and I would have been disappointed not to have had the opportunity to contribute something because he did make a big impact on me. So it was just a suggestion but I probably should have made it directly to his family and friends.
I am glad Douglas' friends are doing this and I will be sponsoring, I have kept this thread on my bookmarks and was wondering whether I ought to delete it recently. I am glad i didn't.
I think there will be no need to re prioritise or restart this thread, the new activity on it will ping it to the top of the boards, Douglas's story will draw people in as it has with all of us.
We have not posted on this thread for a while now since before Douglas died and this evening we decided to catch up as Runners World played a very meaningful part in his life.
This thread was a lifeline to Douglas during his long illness and meant an enormous amount to him,it was a way he could keep in touch with something he had enjoyed so much but had to give up due to his cruel illness. The support which was given by you all made him very happy and provided a reason to get out of his bed in the morning .
Whatever all you good people wish to do regarding sponsoring those running in Douglas's memory in the forthcoming Rome marathon is a personal decision and of course is entirely up to you .
My feeling is that a little can go a long way to assist in the research that prevented dear Douglas from ever running again or continuing his postings on this remarkable site

I agree with FB - it's up to the relatives to approach RW (if that's what they wish)
