Winterswim has just been relaunched for 2010.
Last year this was very successful way of keeping peoples interest in swimming going thru the dark months.
Tom Williams of Marathon Talk fame started it by setting a series of challenges via twitter to give people some motivation in their off season swimming. There were league tables set up and every 2 weeks you are expected to post a time for a set date.
The exact format has now been revealed on the new website www.winterswim.co.uk and you have until the 28th November this year to post a base 400m time.
All the details are on the website, if you fancy it, get involved.
This is also on facebook and twitter.

and i have lost my points from the first first round i think
May see if I get a better one
Oooooh good stuff.....I can re-register on that site then and still time to do another 400m swim. I made such an improvement on my original time that I had convinced myself I mis-counted.
My original base time was from the first swim I'd done for several months. A couple of weeks of regular swimming resulted in a much more representative time - and won me the round
Have entered that as my base time for the new first round but should be able to improve on it a little before the end of the month - as long as I carry on swimming regualrly.
Think I'll give this a try.
I've just started swimming again for the first time since 2008, and have only been three times so far, so I should get a nice slow baseline time with lots of room for improvement.
Oh dear. Did my baseline today, and fully realised the effects of getting mega-lardy and not swimming for two years.
On the bright side - there is lots of room for improvement.
I thought I'd missed this - damn! I've no excuse now. Better get to the pool tomorrow then.
I love this as an excuse!!
I'll do anything to push me to improve my swimming....I truly am Carp!!
logged my time last night - great to have a challenge like this to focus training
Ended up being quite awkward; the pool is usually 50m, but on some public swims they raise a barrier splitting the pool in 2 - the side that was available to the public became 23m - calulating how to measure 400m in a 23 meter pool added an interesting mental element to the swim!
Have registered and put my base time in as well.
It was shocking though! As haven't done a lot of swimming since the Vit, am almost a minute slower than my best!!! Will see if I can put a more respectable time in before the deadline if it will let me.
I may have been sand bagging a bit. First attempt was 9:40 but it was part of a masters swim, and near the end so I guess (I know) I was flagging. However it was a 25m. pool. Plus not certain that I paced it right the first time.
New time recorded at 09:01 this afternoon in a 20m. pool. I reckon I am slightly slower in a 20m. pool than I am in a longer pool. Turns are not my speciality and aren't that useful in a lake.

I need to get that turning a bit quicker too.....I'm sure I can knock of a little bit more. I hate speed, so this is making me make a bit of an effort and not just my usual plodding along....if you can plod in the water that is.
Will bank the old time unless I miraculously find time to swim this week
I had an email from winterswim HQ over the weekend. They have added some age/sex/location filters to the results. They had me down as a Female which would have had me top of my age group apparently. Having owned up I am now back in the mid-pack...
Turns could be crucial for this 50m TT starting next week. I may try and tumble for a one-turn effort!
Great web site though. Simple concept well presented.
